R Gary savo motiną vaizduoja su meile, pasididžiavimu, atlaidžiai vertindamas jos silpnybes.“Aušros pažadas” – tai visiškas vienišos motinos atsidavimas vienturčiam sūnui. Įsitikinusi, kad berniukas privalo tapti “didžiu žmogumi”, ji darė viską, kad taip ir būtų. Autorius su šypsena aprašo daugybę dalykų, kuriuos motina skatino jį daryti: šokių, dailės, muzikos pamokas, lauko teniso treniruotes, stūmimą į aukštuomenę ir kt. Moteris dėjo visas pastangas, kad jos sūnus iškiltų, o šis visąlaik stengėsi pateisinti jos lūkesčius (tai jam iš tiesų pavyko). Pareiga motinai R. Gary visada buvo aukščiau visko.Ko gero, labiausiai sužavėjo autoriaus sugebėjimas visiems aprašomiems dalykams suteikti humoristinį, kartais kiek ironišką atspalvį. Laisvu stiliumi parašytas kūrinys išsiskiria originaliu iš pirmo žvilgsnio paprastų dalykų vertinimu, todėl knyga yra įdomi, lengvai ir greitai perskaitoma.
