"El principal objetivo del proyecto de investigación que ha llevado a la presente compilación de textos ha sido contribuir a la historia del indigenismo, en el sentido de mejorar el conocimiento de las diversas trayectorias que lo constituyen de acuerdo con las condiciones y las posibilidades presentes en cada época. Nos parece que este es un objetivo valioso por cuanto puede aportar a romper con el ciclo de reproducción autorreferencial en el que cada nueva generación pretende deslegitimar y apartar a las anteriores, sin asumir cabalmente los riesgos que hereda al hacerse cargo del propio proyecto indigenista por más reconstituido que resulte en cada nueva etapa; riesgos que están en la fijación de los atributos de identidad como fundamento de la acción política, y en el difícil lugar que el propio indigenismo tiene dentro de las sociedades nacionales y de la participación de éstas en los escenarios internacionales. La ambivalencia del indigenismo ha estado y sigue estando en la modulación que han tenido estos riesgos dentro de los proyectos de investigación y de la acción política, así como en las críticas que anteceden a cada nueva oferta indigenista."--Contracarátula
