Rollon, chef viking, appartient autant à la légende qu’à l’histoire. Rollon fait partie de ces envahisseurs scandinaves qui ébranlèrent l’Empire carolingien, fondé par Charlemagne. À partir des années 870, il participe à la plupart des expéditions de pillage dans la vallée de la Seine et dans le centre du royaume de France. Déterminé à arrêter ces attaques incessantes, le roi Charles le Simple négocie avec Rollon le traité de Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, conclu en 911 entre les Vikings et les Francs, met fin à plusieurs décennies de troubles violents et constitue l’acte fondateur du futur duché de Normandie. Pierre Bouet nous conte l’étonnante histoire de ce chef de pirates qui a acquis un pouvoir officiel et une autorité légitime sur tous les Vikings présents sur la terre qui lui a été concédée.
