En 1955, apareció póstumamente, bajo el cuidado editorial de Raúl Porras Barrenechea, probablemente el libro de José de la Riva-Agüero (Lima, 1885-1944) más querido por sus lectores: Paisajes peruanos. Ocho ediciones, entre 1955 y 2012, todas basadas en la prínceps de Porras, dan testimonio de ello.
Riva-Agüero escribió __Paisajes__ entre 1916 y 1917 a partir de las libretas de notas con que registró sus impresiones de un viaje que hizo por la Sierra peruana en 1912. Como la de Porras, la presente edición se basa en los originales mecanografiados y corregidos que Riva-Agüero reunió en 1931, luego de su largo autoexilio europeo. A diferencia de la de Porras, se consignan en el aparato crítico todas las variantes encontradas, tanto en el manuscrito como en las publicaciones periódicas con las que Riva-Agüero colaboró entre 1916 y 1952. Las notas buscan facilitar la comprensión al lector interesado y el estudio introductorio, dar cuenta de la dimensión textual de un relato de viajes polifónico que aspira a descubrir el carácter del Perú en su geografía y a partir de ella, en su historia, como lo prueban tanto el cronotopo del camino –verdadero artificio organizador del libro- como los encendidos ensayos.
