Seit dem Tag, an dem Hugo Stern in den Vorruhestand geschickt wird, ist nichts mehr, wie es war. Unaufhaltsam entgleitet ihm sein bisher so idyllisches Leben als Grundschullehrer in Amsterdam. Stern denkt zurück an seine Kindheit in dörflicher Enge, an seine Jugend im London der Swinging Sixties, die ihm auch nicht die erhoffte Freiheit gebracht hat, und an die Liebe zu seiner Frau Merel, die sich ihm mehr und mehr entfremdet. Sterns letzter Halt ist der unter großen Mühen im Ausland adoptierte Sohn, und auch dieser droht ihm zu entwachsen. Die Veränderungen in seiner Familie und die gesellschaftlichen Umbrüche stellen Stern auf eine harte Probe. Doch auch er verblüfft seine Umgebung mit seinem kompromisslosen Wesen und bringt sich dabei selbst in Schwierigkeiten. Mit STERN GEHT ist dem jungen Autor Thomas Heerma van Voss eine berührende Vater-Sohn-Geschichte und das Porträt eines eigenwilligen Träumers gelungen.
