En France, l'Etat-Nation est parvenu à forger son unité malgré la diversité des régions qui l'ont composé. Cette unité est parfois remise en cause, de nos jours, par les revendications identitaires, plus ou moins actives, des aires périphériques : l'Alsace, la Lorraine, la Flandre, la Bretagne, le Pays basque, le Roussillon, les pays d'Oc, la Savoie, et la Corse bien sûr. Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, spécialiste de la "longue durée" braudelienne, rend compte ici des diverses histoires régionales ; de leur intégration simultanée ou successive par la politique de la monarchie d'Ancien Régime et des régimes issus de la Révolution. Bilan d'une réussite incontestable, mais peut-être précaire : un "nouveau cycle de contestation régionale" n'est-il pas en train de naître ? Cette autre manière de faire l'histoire de la France est aussi une réflexion sur l'avenir.
