Lo que los profesores tenemos entre manos es algo realmente grande: ayudar a los jóvenes que se nos confían a entender, a profundizar, a no quedarse solo en lo anecdótico y a pensar con rigor.Los planes de formación del profesorado adolecen de una deficiente atención a ciertos aspectos básicos de la tarea docente que tienen que ver de forma directa con el centro neurálgico de su quehacer: enseñar cosas y ayudar a sus alumnos a entenderlas.En la enseñanza y el aprendizaje intelectual constantemente recurrimos a operaciones como definir, distinguir, clasificar; en muchas materias del currículum estamos familiarizados con nociones como las de «concepto», «enunciado», «razonamiento», «hipótesis», «demostración», «axioma», «modelo»... Desde luego, cuando las empleamos en nuestra docencia, todos los profesores tenemos una cierta intuición de lo que significan. Pero una conciencia más fundamental y mejor fundada del significado y sentido de ciertas nociones epistemológicas elementales, no sé si dará mayor eficacia a nuestra tarea docente, pero es seguro que puede ayudar a que nuestro trabajo esté mejor hecho, y a que sea más bello hacerlo.
