description
All the papers contained in this volume, except the two on 'Certainty' and 'Four Forms of Scepticism', have been previously published; and of those which have been previously published all are reprinted, with only a small number of corrections, in the order in which they were written. I know that some of these papers contain mistakes; but they seem to me, even as they stand, to say some things which are worth saying, and I hope that readers may find it convenient to have them collected in one volume. The paper on 'Certainty' was given as the Howison lecture at the University of California in 1941. And I wish now to express my gratitude to the University at being appointed Howison Lecturer, and my regret that the publication of the paper has been so long delayed. There are bad mistakes in it which I cannot yet see how to put right. 'Four Forms of Scepticism', which has been only partly revised, was delivered as a lecture to various universities during my sojourn in the United States of America during 1940-44, a sojourn which lowe primarily to my good friends Alice and Morris Lazerowitz whose interest and encouragemenat are largely responsible for the publication of this volume now. My thanks are also due to the Committee of the Aristotelian Society for permission to reprint the large number of papers contained in the various supplementary volumes of their Proceedings; to the Editor of 'The Library of Living Philosophers' for permission to reprint 'Russell's "Theory of Descriptions" from The Philosophy of Bertrand Russell; to the Editor of Mind for permission to reprint the articles on Wittgenstein; to the Council of the British Academy for permission to reprint 'Proof of an External World' from Volume XXV of their Proceedingsa; and to Casimir Lewy and my wife and my son Timothy for the immense amount of trouble they have taken in preparing this book for the press while I was in hospital.
