Su asendereada existencia y su amor por Ins lo llevan a la capital de Espaa, a la que se aproximan los ejrcitos franceses. Asiste -y con l los lectores, gracias a la viveza descriptiva del novelista- a la entrada del Emperador en la Villa y Corte. Sin embargo, por encima del hecho histrico predomina en este episodio un escenario de tipos y aspectos de la realidad cotidiana madrilea -artesanos, frailes, hombres pblicos-, de cuya pintura es Galds el gran maestro.
