description
Between February 1833 and March 1834, the religious movement Joseph Smith founded continued to develop as members of the Church of Christ immigrated to Ohio and Missouri from areas across the United States and Upper Canada. The collection of eighty-eight documents found in this third volume of the Documents series of The Joseph Smith Papers sheds light on the formative events of this period, as well as the challenges Joseph Smith faced as he sought to gather church members and establish a city of Zion in Missouri. Included in the volume are minutes, revelations, letters, architectural and city plans, priesthood licenses, legal documents, and an effort to classify the scriptures by topic. Accompanied by extensive historical annotation, the documents in this volume have been transcribed to the highest standards of documentary editing. Together, they illustrate the challenges Joseph Smith faced in leading a church that stretched across the country, as well as his unfolding vision of expanding the church and establishing Zion. Covering topics ranging from heavenly visitations to violent opposition, these documents provide a deeper understanding of Joseph Smith's life and the religious movement he started.

This volume marks the beginning of the Documents series of The Joseph Smith Papers. When complete, the Documents series will publish more than a thousand documents created, authorized, or owned by Joseph Smith, including each of his revelations in its earliest form, reports of his discourses, and correspondence. Also found in the series are articles and editorials he wrote for newspapers, minutes of meetings in which he participated, and records of his ecclesiastical administration. This first volume of the Documents series consists of documents written from July 1828 to June 1831. Among the contents of this volume are more than five dozen revelations that were presented in the first-person voice of Jesus Christ, including texts later published in the Doctrine and Covenants, the expansive visions of Moses (now found in the Pearl of Great Price), and revelations never canonized. In addition, several documents in this volume trace the process of translating and printing the Book of Mormon, as well as early efforts to evangelize using the book and its message. These texts provide the earliest textual insights into Joseph Smith and the founding of what was then called the Church of Christ. They offer glimpses into the religious leader s thoughts, concerns, and initiatives in a crucial early period of the religious movement he started. This book allows the reader not only to study Joseph Smith but also to gain a greater understanding of his followers and the millenarian movement they participated in during the Second Great Awakening.

The much-anticipated Journals, Volume 2, covers the Nauvoo period from December 1841 to April 30, 1843. Two major documents are featured in this volume:
The journal portion of the Book of the Law of the Lord, which served as a combination journal and temple record book. It includes journal entries on revelations received during this time period, letters written and received, and temple donations.
The first two of four small books titled President Joseph Smiths Journal, kept by Willard Richards during the last years of the Prophet Josephs life (the final two books will be published in the forthcoming third and final volume of the Journals series).
The journals provide background information about Josephs life and early Church history and form the foundation for the official history of the Church. Among the key events described in this volume are the creation of the Relief Society; the building of the Nauvoo Temple; and revelations on the nature of God, and baptism for the dead. Three letters from Emma are also included. These journals provide insights about the Prophet Josephs personality, including accounts of him functioning as mayor of Nauvoo, store operator, and general in the Nauvoo legion.

"Become more personally acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith and early Church history through the engrossing volumes of the Documents series. Each volume contains reproductions of 75 to 100 revelations, letters, and other papers presented in chronological order. Historical introductions to each document explain where, when, and why it was created. From revelations to sermons to newspaper editorials to personal correspondence, the documents of this series allow you to see through the eyes of Joseph as early Church history unfolded. A primary focus of the time period covered in Volume 3 is the effort to build temples and develop Zion in Missouri. Volume 3 also documents the challenges Joseph Smith faced as the population of the Church grew in both Ohio and Missouri and as the violent persecution of the Saints in Jackson County intensified. As with the first two volumes, this volume includes many revelations, including the Word of Wisdom (D&C 89), that were later published in the Doctrine and Covenants, making it a valuable companion to studying that standard work." -- deseretbook.com

Volume 9. "This ninth volume in the Documents series features over a hundred letters, revelations, meeting minutes, deeds, sermon accounts, and other documents from December 1841 through April 1842. They chronicle developments in the Church, community, and Joseph Smith s personal life during these important months in Nauvoo, Illinois. The rich documentary record from this period details the creation of the Relief Society, the establishment of a Freemason s lodge in Nauvoo, and the opening of Joseph Smith s store. This book offers a unique portrait of the breadth of Joseph Smith s daily activities as he serves as a military leader and vice mayor of Nauvoo, becomes editor of the Church s newspaper, takes advantage of the nation s new bankruptcy law, and continues to instruct Latter-day Saints near and far through discourses and correspondence. Readers will come away from this volume with an increased understanding of the Prophet s life and this pivotal period in the creation of the restored Church of Jesus Christ."--Amazon.com

Volume 4. "Between April 1834 and September 1835, Joseph Smith and the church he led faced tumultuous times. The documents in this volume of The Joseph Smith Papers highlight Joseph Smith's struggle for Zion's redemption during this period, whether through the calling of the Camp of Israel (later known as Zion's Camp) or through the continued construction of the House of the Lord in Kirtland, Ohio, where the Saints would be endowed with power. Other documents highlight the development of new leadership positions in the church, such as those of Apostle and Seventy. Still other documents show the great efforts that Joseph Smith and other church leaders made to publish a compilation of Smith's revelations, called the Doctrine and Covenants, in 1835. Together, the documents provide insights into the development of the church and characteristics of Joseph Smith as a husband, father, and leader of a growing religious movement."--Amazon.com

The volume gives insight into the life of Joseph Smith as he struggled to end the threat of extradition and faced the incessant demands of running a burgeoning city and a growing church."--Amazon.com

Volume 8-February-November 1841. "The ten months covered by this volume were relatively peaceful and optimistic--the Nauvoo charter had just been approved, and Joseph Smith and the Saints were busy building the Nauvoo temple and establishing the municipal infrastructure of the new city. While performing his duties as a member of the newly formed Nauvoo City Council and as the lieutenant general of the Nauvoo Legion, Joseph Smith faced the challenges of accommodating the influx of immigrating converts and making debt payments on land acquired in the Nauvoo area. Though heavily preoccupied by these civic and business matters, Joseph Smith continued to lead and teach the Saints in his role as prophet"--Amazon.com
