En «Hazell y el timo de las tres cartas», el detective es requerido por la viuda de un hombre que ha muerto bajo las ruedas del metro londinense, para que averigüe si su marido murió asesinado o se suicidó, puesto que del resultado depende que cobre la póliza del seguro. Partiendo de esta intriga, Hazell se lanza en busca de la solución, a través de diversas persecuciones por el laberinto urbanístico de Londres y en su investigación se cruza con diversos tipos del hampa —ya sean gángsters, jugadores o estafadores— marcados todos ellos por la picardía y el crimen. Con su habitual estilo directo, plagado de sarcasmo, los autores consiguen que la narración nos subyugue hasta el melancólico final.
