Dall'esame della forma, dell'evoluzione e delle influenze subite, conclude che questa lingua ha un carattere autoctono proprio e che parecchi suoi elementi intrinseci respingono la tesi di un'origine bizantina. Utilizzata solamente nel discorso orale, arriva dall'VIII secolo a. C. fino ad oggi senza interruzione.
Naturalmente ha subito delle influenze straniere, principalmente del latino e dell'italiano.
I prestiti lessicali con il latino non sono tanti quanti ci si aspetterebbe tenendo conto della lunga convivenza. Certi prestiti italiani furono « grecizzati » sicché dei nomi italiani sono diventati declinabili (p. es. to animale, tu animalìu). L'influenza dell'arabo si manifesta nei nomi dei pesi e misure. Dal lato greco è stata rinvigorita durante la sovranità bizantina in Italia meridionale e in Sicilia (IX sec.).
