Real-Time Integration Methods for Mechanical System Simulation Roderic C. Deyo (auth.), Edward J. Haug, Roderic C. Deyo (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, NATO ASI Series 69, 1, 1991
This book contains the edited versions of lectures and selected contributed papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Real-Time Integration Methods For Mechanical System Simulation, held in Snowbird, Utah, August 7-11, 1989. The Institute was attended by 42 participants from 9 countries, including leading mathematicians and engineers from universities, research institutions, and industry. The majority of participants presented either invited or contributed papers during the Institute, and everyone participated in lively discussions on scientific aspects of the program. The Workshop provided a forum for investigation of promising new directions for solution of differential-algebraic equations (DAE) of mechanical system dynamics by mathematicians and engineers from numerous schools of thought. The Workshop addressed needs and opportunities for new methods of solving of DAE of mechanical system dynamics, from the perspective of a broad range of engineering and scientific applications. Among the most exciting new applications addressed was real time computer simulation of mechanical systems that, for the first time in human history, permits operator-in-the-Ioop simulation of equipment that is controlled by the human; e.g., driving a vehicle, operating a space telerobot, operating a remote manipulator, and operating construction equipment. The enormous potential value of this new application and the fact that real-time numerical integration methods for DAE of mechanical system dynamics is the pacing problem to be solved in realizing this potential served to focus much of the discussion at the Workshop. Controversy in Cardiology : The Practical Clinical Approach William C. Roberts M.D. (auth.), Edward K. Chung M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.C. (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1976, 2012
The purpose of this book is not to discuss in depth various topics in medicine nor to describe in detail all possible controversial subjects in car diology. The primary intention is to describe common cardiac problems with significant controversial viewpoints frequently encountered in our daily practice. This book presents 19 chapters, including the Coronary Arteries in Fatal Coronary Events, Prophylactic Antiarrhythmic Therapy in Acute Myocar dial Infarction, Mobile Coronary Care-Is It Really Needed?, The Use of Artificial Pacemakers in Acute Myocardial Infarction, Treatment of Car diogenic Shock, Serum Digitalis Level-Practical Value, Factors Modifying the Efficacy of Digitalis, Hyperlipidemia and Vascular Disease, Antianginal Agents for Coronary Heart Disease, Anticoagulation Therapy for Coronary Heart Disease, When to Operate on Congenital Heart Diseases, Indications for Coronary Artery Surgery and Patient Selection, Car diomyopathy: Diagnostic Criteria and Classification, Therapeutic Approach to Idiopathic Hypertrophic Sub aortic Stenosis, Current Concepts of Hemiblocks, Physical Activity and Coronary Heart Disease, His Bundle Electrocardiography-Its Clinical Value, Computerized Electrocar diography-Its Practical Value, and Echocardiography-Its Practical Value. As the title of the book indicates, the "pro and con" viewpoints are described in each chapter, and the authors final conclusions are expressed at the end of each. It is hoped that the book will be provocative as well as educational and practical. The contents are intended to be clinical, concise, and practical, so that this book will provide all physicians with up-to-date materials that will assist them directly in the daily care of their patients with common cardiac problems. Model-Based Engineering of Embedded Real-Time Systems: International Dagstuhl Workshop, Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, November 4-9, 2007. Revised Selected Papers (Lecture Notes in Computer Science (6100)) Bernhard Schätz, Holger Giese (auth.), Holger Giese, Gabor Karsai, Edward Lee, Bernhard Rumpe, Bernhard Schätz (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Lecture Notes in Computer Science 6100 : Programming and Software Engineering, 1, 2010
Thetopicof“Model-BasedEngineeringofReal-TimeEmbeddedSystems”brings together a challenging problem domain (real-time embedded systems) and a - lution domain (model-based engineering). It is also at the forefrontof integrated software and systems engineering, as software in this problem domain is an essential tool for system implementation and integration. Today, real-time - bedded software plays a crucial role in most advanced technical systems such as airplanes, mobile phones, and cars, and has become the main driver and - cilitator for innovation. Development, evolution, veri?cation, con?guration, and maintenance of embedded and distributed software nowadays are often serious challenges as drastic increases in complexity can be observed in practice. Model-based engineering in general, and model-based software development in particular, advocates the notion of using models throughout the development and life-cycle of an engineered system. Model-based software engineering re- forces this notion by promoting models not only as the tool of abstraction, but also as the tool for veri?cation, implementation, testing, and maintenance. The application of such model-based engineering techniques to embedded real-time systems appears to be a good candidate to tackle some of the problems arising in the problem domain. Nucleon Correlations in Nuclei (Springer Series in Nuclear and Particle Physics) Prof. Dr. Sc. Anton Nikolaev Antonov, Dr. Peter Edward Hodgson, Prof. Dr. Sc. Ivan Zhelyazkov Petkov (auth.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Springer Series in Nuclear and Particle Physics, Springer Series in Nuclear and Particle Physics, 1, 1993
In recent years there has been growing interest in the nucleon-nucleon correl ations inside nuclei. In many respects the motions of the nucleons can be very well described by an overall mean field, so that the motion of each nucleon is governed by the mean field due to all the other nucleons. This concept underlies the Fermi-gas, Hartree-Fock and shell models and has enabled a range of nuclear properties to be calculated, often to surprising accuracy. It gradually became clear, however, that these mean-field models are limited by the effects due to the very strong interactions between the nucleons that occur at short distances; these are the short-range correlations. They are responsible for instance for the high-momentum components in the nucleon momentum dis tribution, and prevent the simultaneous description of the nuclear density and momentum distributions by the same mean field. It thus becomes necessary to develop methods for including the effects of nucleon correlations in nuclei, and these are the main subject of this book. Some related problems of nuclear structure were discussed in an earlier book by the same authors: Nucleon Momentum and Density Distributions in Nuclei (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1988). The main aim of that book was to study the effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations, both short-range and tensor, on the nucleon momentum distribution, which is particularly sensitive to these correl ations, and on the nucleon density distribution. Logarithmic Potentials with External Fields (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften, 316) Edward B. Saff, Vilmos Totik (auth.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften, Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften 316, 1, 1997
In recent years approximation theory and the theory of orthogonal polynomials have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of solutions of difficult and previously untouchable problems. This is due to the interaction of approximation theoretical techniques with classical potential theory (more precisely, the theory of logarithmic potentials, which is directly related to polynomials and to problems in the plane or on the real line). Most of the applications are based on an exten sion of classical logarithmic potential theory to the case when there is a weight (external field) present. The list of recent developments is quite impressive and includes: creation of the theory of non-classical orthogonal polynomials with re spect to exponential weights; the theory of orthogonal polynomials with respect to general measures with compact support; the theory of incomplete polynomials and their widespread generalizations, and the theory of multipoint Pade approximation. The new approach has produced long sought solutions for many problems; most notably, the Freud problems on the asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials with a respect to weights of the form exp(-Ixl ); the "l/9-th" conjecture on rational approximation of exp(x); and the problem of the exact asymptotic constant in the rational approximation of Ixl. One aim of the present book is to provide a self-contained introduction to the aforementioned "weighted" potential theory as well as to its numerous applications. As a side-product we shall also fully develop the classical theory of logarithmic potentials. Erscheinungsdatum: 08.12.2010

The Philosophy Behind Physics Thomas A. Brody; Luis de la Pena; Peter E. Hodgson Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2012
Thomas Brody had one of the most powerful and wide-ranging intellects of his generation. Although primarily a physicist who worked on statistical prob lems in nuclear physics, on probability theory and on computational physics he had an extensive knowledge of the philosophy of science and of philosophy, and was fluent in many languages. He is well-known among physicists for the Brody-Moshinsky transformation but his extensive work on probability and on the philosophy of science remained almost unknown. This was because the originality of his ideas entailed many lengthy battles with uncomprehending referees, and he frequently published in Mexican journals of limited circula tion. In addition, his strongly critical spirit inhibited his willingness to publish his ideas. He was always most concerned by the very unsatisfactory situation in the philosophy of physics, that is largely due to the generally poor knowledge that physicists and philosophers have of each other's disciplines. Philosophers of science write at length about physics without any detailed first-hand knowl edge of how research is actually carried out. Physicists, for their part, often implicitly assume naive or erroneous philosophical ideas, and this often hinders their scientific work, besides spreading further confusion if they try to give an account of what they are doing.

Women in Edward Bond Susana Nicolás Román (editor) Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften, Transatlantic Studies in British and North American Culture 25, 2019
This book focuses on an unexplored area of Edward Bond’s writing. While different studies examine the violence present in his plays or his dramatic theory, questions around his powerful female characters have remained unsolved. None of the criticism has developed specifically the role of these women as speakers of their social context. The human condition that Bond depicts in his plays is not gender-oriented. From his early plays, Edward Bond has been considered misogynist, but this book presents the possibility to discover a different Bond as a writer on women with powerful voices. The reader of this book will discover in these women female spokeswomen of revolution, committed and suffering mothers but also the personification of evil and wickedness. Emotions and ideas will be analyzed in these pages in a journey through Bond’s feminine universe closer to reality than to stage. Justice, the essence of humanity or the nature of oppression are dealt with through the construction of brilliant characters with no possibility of catharsis. This vision of drama as a social forum clearly exemplifies Bond’s defense on the possibility of change. Erscheinungsdatum: 28.02.2019

Computer Integrated Experimentation (Environmental and Energetics Series) Professor Edward B. Magrab (auth.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Environmental and Energetics Series, Environmental and Energetics Series, 1, 1991
This book provides a basis by which instruments and transducers can be selected, assembled and integrated with a computer to measure and control physical processes in an accurate and predictable manner. It consists of two parts, the first of which lays the theoretical foundation for the second. First the Fourier analysis of signals are summarized. Then, from a systems point of view, the following chapters introduce the important aspects of filters, amplifiers and analog-to-digital converters. The second half of the book first discusses in depth the importance of the timing of the computer with its instruments, transducers and actuators. It then summarizes the physical and functional aspects of transducers and actuators and gives numerous detailed examples of how they can be integrated into computer controlled experiments and processes. Point of View in the Cinema: A Theory of Narration and Subjectivity in Classical Film (Approaches to Semiotics [AS], 66) Edward Branigan; foreword by David Bordwell Mouton de Gruyter, Approaches to semiotics ;, 66, Berlin, New York, |||, 1984
Branigan effectively criticizes the communication model of narration, a task long overdue in Anglo-American circles. The book brings out the extent to which mainstream mimetic theories have relied upon the elastic notion of an invisible, idealized observer, a convenient spook whom critics can summon up whenever they desire to "naturalize" style. The book also makes distinctions among types of subjectivity; after this, we will have much more precise ways of tracing the fluctuations among a character's vision, dreams, wishes, and so forth. Branigan also explains the necessity of distinguishing levels of narration. Erscheinungsdatum: 01.12.1984

Kienholz : a retrospective : Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz Kienholz, Edward, 1927-1994, Reddin-Kienholz, Nancy, 1943-; Hopps, Walter; Brooks, Rosetta; Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, Calif.); Berlinische Galerie New York : Whitney Museum of American Art, in association with D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, Thames and Hudson, New York, ©1996
300 pages : 30 cm, The tableaux, environments, and conceptual pieces of Edward Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz are direct, powerful, and uncompromising. The works span four decades, beginning with Edward's pieces from the 1950s and continuing with those produced jointly with Nancy Reddin Kienholz from 1972 until Edward's death in 1994. Emerging from the Beat aesthetic of the early 1950s, the Kienholz oeuvre embraces the honest spontaneity of jazz, the emotional intensity of Abstract, Expressionism, and the homemade approach of do-it-yourself modernism. At the same time, it is also socially conscious realist sculpture by artists resolutely engaged in an ongoing critique of the world around them. The Kienholzes probed the dark edges of postwar society, confronting war, racism, institutional indifference, sexuality, and cruelty. Published on the occasion of an important retrospective exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Kienholz, A Retrospective is the most fully illustrated book ever published on the Kienholz oeuvre. It reproduces in more than four hundred illustrations a selection of works ranging from intimate collages to life-size tableaux, created between 1954 and 1994. The Dark Side of Media and Technology: A 21st Century Guide to Media and Technological Literacy Edward Downs (editor) Peter Lang Inc., International Academic Publishers, New York Bern Berlin Vienna, 2019
__The Dark Side of Media and Technology: A 21st Century Guide to Media and Technological Literacy__ is Herculean in its effort to survey for landmines in a rapidly changing media landscape. The book identifies four dark outcomes related to media and technology use in the 21st century, and balances the dark side with four points of light that are the keys to taking ownership of a media- and technology-saturated world. The text contains an impressive list of multi-disciplinary experts and cutting-edge researchers who approach 25 separate dark side issues with concise, highly readable chapters, replete with unique recommendations for navigating our mediated present and future. The Dark Side of Media and Technology is grounded in theory and current research, but possesses an appeal similar to a page-turning dystopian novel; as a result, this volume should be of interest to scholars, students, and curious lay-readers alike. It should be the "go-to" text for anyone who is interested in learning what the research says about how we use media and technology, as well as how media and technology use us.

Mathematical Psychology in Progress Recent Research in Psychology Patrick Suppes (auth.), Edward E. Roskam (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Recent Research in Psychology, Recent Research in Psychology, 1, 1989
This volume is the third volume of papers originating from the European Mathematical Psychology Group. Earlier volumes were: E. Degreef & J. van Buggenhaut (Eds.), Trends In Mathematical Psychology, Amsterdam, North-Holland Publ. Cy., 1984, and E.E. Roskam & R. Suck (Eds.), Progress in Mathematical Psychology, Amsterdam: Elsevier Science Publ. As the title indicates, this volume presents work in progress, which was reported in one of the recent annual meetings of the European Mathematical Psychology Group. The Group finds it worthwhile to disseminate this work, using a review process which is somewhat less strict, and a publication lag which is shorter, than would be the case for standard international journals. The editor is happy that the meetings of the European Mathematical Psychology Group are regularly attended by colleagues from overseas. Their contributions also appear in this volume, as was the case in earlier volumes. Despite apparent heterogeneity, the reader will observe that European mathemati cal psychologists have a keen interest in basic issues of mathematical modeling and measurement theory, and that also substantive topics, such as decision making, per ception, and performance are studied in the context of formal modeling. Also, and per haps of more than casual importance for future developments, is the fact that theory, experiment, and data analysis go closely together. It should therefore not surprise that psychometric topics, and topics in scaling are represented in this volume, alongside with topics of a more 'purely' mathematical nature. Erscheinungsdatum: 11.10.1989

Surgery and Arthroscopy of the Knee : First European Congress of Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy Berlin, 9–14. 4. 1984 edited by E.L. Trickey and P. Hertel Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2012
This book is a record of the papers read at the first meeting of the European Society of Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESKA). This was held in the magnificent International Congress Centre (ICC) in West Berlin. Planning for the inaugural meeting of a proposed large society is inevitably fraught with problems and doubts. However, thanks to the tremendous assistance given by the ICC organization and to the participation of so many orthopaedic surgeons from Europe and all over the world the society had a very successful meeting, and it is fitting that the papers are collected together in this book as a permanent record. Various factors combined to delay the appearance of the book until now, shortly before the second ESKA meeting (1986) in Basle. We should like to take this opportunity of thanking Springer-Verlag for all the hard work involved in ensuring that the book was finished before this occasion and while the subject matter is still so topical.

Smart Information and Knowledge Management: Advances, Challenges, and Critical Issues (Studies in Computational Intelligence, 260) Martin Drozda, Sven Schaust (auth.), Edward Szczerbicki, Ngoc Thanh Nguyen (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Studies in Computational Intelligence, Studies in Computational Intelligence 260, 1, 2010
Annotation New approaches are needed that could move us towards developing effective applicable intelligent systems for problem solving and decision making, One of the main efforts in intelligent systems development is focused on knowledge and information management which is regarded as the crucial issue in smart decision making support. The 14 Chapters of this book represent a sample of such effort. The overall aim of this book is to provide guidelines to develop tools for smart processing of knowledge and information. Still, the guide does not presume to give ultimate answers. Rather, it poses ideas and case studies to explore the complexities and challenges of modern knowledge management issues. It also encourages its reader to become aware of the multifaceted interdisciplinary character of such issues. The premise of this book is that its reader will leave it with a heightened ability to think - in different ways - about developing, evaluating, and supporting intelligent knowledge and information management systems in real life based environment

Postclassical Greek Prepositions and Conceptual Metaphor: Cognitive Semantic Analysis and Biblical Interpretation (Fontes et Subsidia ad Bibliam pertinentes Book 12) Michael G Aubrey; Rachel E Aubrey; Erin M Heim; Bonnie Howe; Patrick James; Jonathan T Pennington; Richard A Rhodes; William A Ross; Steven E Runge; Steven Edward Runge de Gruyter GmbH, Walter, De Gruyter, Berlin, 2022
Traditional semantic description of Ancient Greek prepositions has struggled to synthesize the varied and seemingly arbitrary uses into something other than a disparate, sometimes overlapping list of senses. The Cognitive Linguistic approach of prototype theory holds that the meanings of a preposition are better explained as a semantic network of related senses that radially extend from a primary, spatial sense. These radial extensions arise from contextual factors that affect the metaphorical representation of the spatial scene that is profiled. Building upon the Cognitive Linguistic descriptions of Bortone (2009) and Luraghi (2009), linguists, biblical scholars, and Greek lexicographers apply these developments to offer more in-depth descriptions of select postclassical Greek prepositions and consider the exegetical and lexicographical implications of these findings. This volume will be of interest to those studying or researching the Greek of the New Testament seeking more linguistically-informed description of prepositional semantics, particularly with a focus on the exegetical implications of choice among seemingly similar prepositions in Greek and the challenges of potentially mismatched translation into English.

Ragtime : A Musical and Cultural History Edward Berlin Open Road Distribution : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., [N.p.], 2016

Ragtime, the jaunty, toe-tapping music that captivated American society from the 1890s through World War I, forms the roots of America’s popular musical expression. But the understanding of ragtime and its era has been clouded by a history of murky impressions, half-truths, and inventive fictions. Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History cuts through the murkiness. A methodical survey of thousands of rags along with an examination of then-contemporary opinions in magazines and newspapers demonstrate how the music evolved, and how America responded to it.

Organic Acids in Geological Processes Michael D. Lewan, Edward D. Pittman (auth.), Dr. Edward D. Pittman, Dr. Michael D. Lewan (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994, 2011
In May of 1991, Victor Van Buren, who was then with Springer Verlag in New York City, asked us for timely topics in the earth sciences that would be appropriate for publication as a book. We all quickly agreed that recent interest and research activity on the role of organic acids in geological processes would make a timely book on this diverse and controversial topic. As coeditors, we outlined chapter topics for such a book that maintained a good balance between geological and geochemical interests. Specific authors were then sought for each of the chapter topics. We had exceptional success in getting leading researchers as authors, and their response was universally enthusiastic. This approach has been most gratifying in that it provides a cohesion and conciseness that is not always present in books representing compilations of papers from symposia. This book does not resolve the controver sies that exist regarding the significance of organic acids in geolog ical processes. However, it does present both sides of the controver sies in terms of available data and current interpretations. Readers may judge for themselves and envisage research necessary to resolve these controversies in the future. We thank the authors of this book for their participation, dedication, and cooperation. We are also grateful for support from Dr. Wolfgang Engel and his staff at Springer-Verlag (Heidelberg) in expediting the editing and publication of this book in a timely manner. Infinite programming : proceedings of an international symposium on Infinite Dimensional Linear Programming, Churchill College, Cambridge, United Kingdom, September 7-10, 1984 J. Ch. Pomerol (auth.), Dr. Edward J. Anderson, Dr. Andrew B. Philpott (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K, Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems, Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems 259, 1, 1985
Infinite programming may be defined as the study of mathematical programming problems in which the number of variables and the number of constraints are both possibly infinite. Many optimization problems in engineering, operations research, and economics have natural formul- ions as infinite programs. For example, the problem of Chebyshev approximation can be posed as a linear program with an infinite number of constraints. Formally, given continuous functions f,gl,g2, ••• ,gn on the interval [a,b], we can find the linear combination of the functions gl,g2, ... ,gn which is the best uniform approximation to f by choosing real numbers a,xl,x2, •.. ,x to n minimize a t€ [a,b]. This is an example of a semi-infinite program; the number of variables is finite and the number of constraints is infinite. An example of an infinite program in which the number of constraints and the number of variables are both infinite, is the well-known continuous linear program which can be formulated as follows. T minimize ~ c(t)Tx(t)dt t b(t) , subject to Bx(t) + fo Kx(s)ds x(t) .. 0, t € [0, T] • If x is regarded as a member of some infinite-dimensional vector space of functions, then this problem is a linear program posed over that space. Observe that if the constraint equations are differentiated, then this problem takes the form of a linear optimal control problem with state IV variable inequality constraints. The prokaryotes. <3> Prokaryotic physiology and biochemistry : with 220 figures and 62 tables Harold L. Drake, Kirsten Küsel, Carola Matthies (auth.), Eugene Rosenberg, Edward F. DeLong, Stephen Lory, Erko Stackebrandt, Fabiano Thompson (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Springer reference, 4. ed, Heidelberg, 2013
The Prokaryotes is a comprehensive, multi-authored, peer reviewed reference work on Bacteria and Achaea. This fourth edition of The Prokaryotes is organized to cover all taxonomic diversity, using the family level to delineate chapters. Different from other resources, this new Springer product includes not only taxonomy, but also prokaryotic biology and technology of taxa in a broad context. Technological aspects highlight the usefulness of prokaryotes in processes and products, including biocontrol agents and as genetics tools. The content of the expanded fourth edition is divided into two parts: Part 1 contains review chapters dealing with the most important general concepts in molecular, applied and general prokaryote biology; Part 2 describes the known properties of specific taxonomic groups. Two completely new sections have been added to Part 1: bacterial communities and human bacteriology. The bacterial communities section reflects the growing realization that studies on pure cultures of bacteria have led to an incomplete picture of the microbial world for two fundamental reasons: the vast majority of bacteria in soil, water and associated with biological tissues are currently not culturable, and that an understanding of microbial ecology requires knowledge on how different bacterial species interact with each other in their natural environment. The new section on human microbiology deals with bacteria associated with healthy humans and bacterial pathogenesis. Each of the major human diseases caused by bacteria is reviewed, from identifying the pathogens by classical clinical and non-culturing techniques to the biochemical mechanisms of the disease process. The 4th edition of The Prokaryotes is the most complete resource on the biology of prokaryotes. The following volumes are published consecutively within the 4th Edition: Prokaryotic Biology and Symbiotic Associations Prokaryotic Communities and Ecophysiology Prokaryotic Physiology and Biochemistry Applied Bacteriology and Biotechnology Human Microbiology Actinobacteria Firmicutes Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria Gammaproteobacteria Deltaproteobacteria and Epsilonproteobacteria Other Major Lineages of Bacteria and the Archaea.;Volume 3: Human Microbiology -- Intestinal Tract Bacteria -- Oral Microbiology -- Prebiotics -- Probiotics -- Skin Bacteria.-Bacterial Pathogenesis -- Biotoxin -- Botulism and Tetanus -- Bubonic Plague -- Burn Infections -- Chlamydial Diseases -- Cholera -- Diarrhea -- Diphtheria -- Dysentery -- Gonorrhea -- Identification of Pathogens by Classical Clinical Tests -- Identification of Pathogens by Nonculturing Molecular Techniques -- Legionnaires' Disease -- Listeria -- Meningitis -- Plague -- Pneumonia -- Pseudomonas and Cystic Fibrosis -- Syphilis -- Tuberculosis -- Typhoid -- Urinary Tract Infections -- Whooping Cough.

Energy – in the headlines, discussed controversially, vital. The use of regenerative energy in many primary forms leads to the necessity to store grid dimensions for maintaining continuous supply and enabling the replacement of fossil fuel systems. Chemical energy storage is one of the possibilities besides mechano-thermal and biological systems. This work starts with the more general aspects of chemical energy storage in the context of the geosphere and evolves to dealing with aspects of electrochemistry, catalysis, synthesis of catalysts, functional analysis of catalytic processes and with the interface between electrochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis. Top-notch experts provide a sound, practical, hands-on insight into the present status of energy conversion aimed primarily at the young emerging research front. * New chapters devoted to energy and society, energy ethics, and the innovative use of carbon. * Expands on the technology and materials discussed in the 1st edition * A good review of what is feasible at an industrial level – potential vs. risk

Cryopreservation of Plant Germplasm II (Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry Book 50) Leigh E. Towill (auth.), Dr. Leigh E. Towill, Prof. Dr. Y. P. S. Bajaj (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry, Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry 50, 1, 2002
Ex situ preservation of germplasm for higher plant species has been accom plished using either seeds or clones, but storage of these under typical condi tions does not provide the extreme longevities that are needed to minimize risk of loss. Costs of maintenance and regeneration of stocks are also high. Systems that provide virtually indefinite storage should supplement existing methods and it is within this context that cryopreservation is presented. The use of low temperature preservation was initially more a concern of medicine and animal breeding, and was expanded to plants in the 1970s. Sur vival after cryogenic exposure has now been demonstrated for diverse plant groups including algae, bryophytes, fungi and higher plants. If survival is com monplace, then the eventual application is a cryopreservation system, whereby cells, tissues and organs are held indefinitely for use, often in the unforeseen future. The increasing interest and capabilities for application could not have occurred at a more opportune time since expanding human populations have placed unprecedented pressures on plant diversity. This book emphasizes cry opreservation of higher plants and was initially driven by the concern for loss of diversity in crops and the recognized need that this diversity would be essential for continued improvement of the many plants used by society for food, health and shelter. The interest in cryopreservation has been expanded by conservationists and their concerns for retaining, as much as possible, the diversity of natural populations. The need for cryopreservation, thus, is well established.

Sympathetic afferent fibers originate from a visceral organ, course in the thoracolumbar rami communicantes, have cell bodies located in dorsal root ganglia, and terminate in the gray matter of the spinal cord. Sympathetic afferent fibers from the heart transmit information about noxious stimuli associated with myocardial ischemia, i. e. angina pectoris. Previous reviews have described the characteristics of cardiovascular sympathetic afferent fibers (Bishop et al. 1983; Malliani 1982). This review summarizes that work and focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying the complexities of angina pectoris. In order to understand anginal pain, cells forming the classical pain pathway, the spinothalamic tract (STn, were chosen for study. These cells were chosen to address questions about anginal pain because they transmit nociceptive informa of pain. Antidromic tion to brain regions that are involved in the perception activation of STT cells provided a means of identifying cells involved with trans mission of nociceptive information in anesthetized animals. Other ascending pathways may also transmit nociceptive information, but many studies show that the STT plays an important role. Visceral pain is commonly referred to overlying somatic structures. The pain of angina pectoris can be sensed over a wide area of the thorax: in the retrosternal, precordial anterior thoracic, and anterior cervical regions of the chest; in the left or sometimes even the right shoulder, arm, wrist, or hand; or in the jaw and teeth (Harrison and Reeves 1968).
