Phaedo : Ed. with introd. and notes edited with introduction and notes by John Burnet Oxford University Press, USA, 1st ed., 14th impression, Oxford, 1984
After an interval of some months or years, and at Phlius, a town of Peloponnesus, the tale of the last hours of Socrates is narrated to Echecrates and other Phliasians by Phaedo the 'beloved disciple.' The Dialogue necessarily takes the form of a narrative, because Socrates has to be described acting as well as speaking. The minutest particulars of the event are interesting to distant friends, and the narrator has an equal interest in them.

Theaetetus (Clarendon Plato Series) Plato; McDowell, John Henry Oxford : Clarendon Press, Clarendon Plato series, Oxford, England, 1973
Theaetetus records the first critical attempt to come to grips with certain intricate and vexing problems of human knowledge. What is required in the interest of philosophy is a theory of knowledge. The historical importance of the Theaetetus is that the chief problems in this field were first raised and discussed in it.

Marvell, Nabokov : childhood and Arcadia Michael Long, 1941- Oxford [Oxfordshire]: Clarendon Press ; London ; New York: Oxford University Press, Oxford [Oxfordshire], London, New York, England, 1984
This unusual study brings together, for the purpose of illuminating comparison, two writers of apparently different worlds. A seventeenth-century poet and a twentieth-century novelist are found to share images, themes, and attitudes which suggest intriguing correspondences between each author helps us to read the other.

lgli/Handy, Robert T. - A History of the Churches in the United States and Canada (Oxford History of the Christian Church) (1977, Clarendon Press).pdf
A History of the Churches in the United States and Canada (Oxford History of the Christian Church) Handy, Robert T. Clarendon Press, Oxford History of the Christian Church, 1, 1977
The religious histories of both the USA and Canada contain many dramatic themes, such as the Great Awakenings, the triumph of religious freedom, the clashes between Catholics and Protestants, the tensions of racial and ethnic differences, the forming of church unions, and the contentions between Christians who seek to express their faith in the thought patterns of their time and those who cling to traditional formulations. The way the churches faced the movement of peoples into and across a vast continent tells much about their present size and characteristics in both Canada and the United States.

Oral literature in Africa (Oxford library of African literature) [by] Ruth Finnegan Clarendon Press, Oxford library of African literature, Oxford, United Kingdom, 1970
Ruth Finnegan’s Oral Literature in Africa was first published in 1970, and since then has been widely praised as one of the most important books in its field. Based on years of fieldwork, the study traces the history of storytelling across the continent of Africa. This revised edition makes Finnegan’s ground-breaking research available to the next generation of scholars. It includes a new introduction, additional images and an updated bibliography, as well as its original chapters on poetry, prose, "drum language” and drama, and an overview of the social, linguistic and historical background of oral literature in Africa. This volume is complemented by original recordings of stories and songs from the Limba country (Sierra Leone), collected by Finnegan during her fieldwork in the late 1960s, which are freely accessible here. The book is available as a free pdf and ebook download thanks to the generous support of interested readers and organisations, who made donations using the crowd-funding website unglue.it. Oral Literature in Africa is part of the World Oral Literature Series published in conjunction with the World Oral Literature Project.

The early versions of the New Testament : their origin, transmission, and limitations Bruce Manning Metzger Oxford University PressOxford, nap 1st, 1977
## Abstract This book deals with the origin and transmission of all the translations of the New Testament made before about AD 1000, setting them in the historical context of the expansion of Christianity. For each a list is given of the earliest surviving manuscripts and of noteworthy printed editions, and an account follows of the history of the scholarly investigation and textual analysis of that version. An important feature of the book is the series of discussions of the characteristics of the languages concerned and their bearing on attempts to recover from the versions the readings of the underlying Greek manuscripts.

Sweetness and light : the Queen Anne movement, 1860-1900 Mark Girouard, 1931- Oxford [Eng.]: Clarendon Press, Oxford [Eng.], England, 1977
"'Queen Anne' was more than a style of architecture: its influence can be traced in furniture, pictures and decorations of the period, in children's books such as Kate Greenaway's, and in the revival of the 'old-fashioned' garden. In this book, Mark Girouard describes the 'Queen Anne' movement in all its manifestations, tracing its origin in the 1860s the spread of its subsequent vogue from London to the provinces, and from England to America, and its fall from grace in the 1890s, when it was taken up the architects of pubs and waterside villas. In doing so he does more than chart the style for the first time: he also throws light on an important segment of English life in the last decades of the nineteenth century."--back cover.

A History of the Oratorio, Volume 3: The Oratorio in the Classical Era Howard E. Smither University of North Carolina Press, aFirst Edition First Printing., 1987
With this volume, Howard Smither completes his monumental History of the Oratorio. Volumes 1 and 2 treated the oratorio in the Baroque era, while Volume 3 explored the genre in the Classical era. Here, Smither surveys the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century oratorio, stressing the main geographic areas of oratorio composition and performance: Germany, Britain, America, and France.Continuing the approach of the previous volumes, Smither explores the oratorio in each language and geographical area by first examining the cultural and social contexts of oratorio. He then addresses aesthetic theory and criticism, treats libretto and music in general, and offers detailed analyses of the librettos and music of specific oratorios (thirty-one in all) that are of special importance to the history of the genre. As a synthesis of specialized literature as well as an investigation of primary sources, this work will serve as both a springboard for further research and an essential reference for choral conductors, soloists, choral singers, and others interested in the history of the oratorio.

The rise and fall of the new Christian right : conservative Protestant politics in America, 1978-1988 Steve; Yearley, Steven Bruce Oxford: Clarendon Press ; New York: Oxford University Press, Oxford, New York, England, 1988

The resurgence during the Reagan administration of right-wing organizations-like Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority-committed to bringing religion back into American politics, reflected the determination of fundamentalists to fight against a perceived domination that threatened the autonomy of conservative Protestantism from a liberal and cosmopolitan elite. The fundamentalists, however, have been forced into alliances with conservative Catholics and Jews, and other secular conservatives, in their quest for political strength; and, inherent tensions of this coalition-building effort have worked against the cause, being in large part responsible for the relative failure of the movement to make larger inroads into American popular politics. This important new book draws on survey data and interviews with fundamentalist activists to chart the rise and fall of the New Christian Right. Bruce traces the postwar social and religious origins of the movement, evaluates its achievements, and analyzes why, despite some local successes, it has failed to remake the United States as one nation under God. He also draws larger conclusions about the political possibilities for religious minorities in modern societies.
