The Country Life Picture Book of Scotland [text by] Lord Tweedsmuir; photography by W. F. Davidson and R. Thomlinson [Feltham]: Country Life Books ; London: Distributed by Hamlyn, [Feltham], London, England, 1977
This book gathers together more than a hundred pictures of Scotland. In sunlight and shadow. In winter and summer. It is pictures like these that wandering Scots carry in their minds as they seek their fortunes all over the world and their thoughts turn back to Scotland ... - from the author's 'Scotland A personal view'

Transitions to Empire: Essays in Greco-Roman History, 360-146 B.C., in Honor of E. Badian (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture) Badian, E; Wallace, Robert W., 1950-; Harris, Edward Monroe Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1996
x, 498 pages ; 24 cm During the period 360-146 B.C., the Greco-Roman world underwent the transition from independent city states and small regional powers to the large and potent empires of the Hellenistic age. The essays in this volume consider various aspects of this central political transformation. The contributors to the volume are students or close working colleagues of Ernst Badian, perhaps the greatest living authority on the period under discussion. Included in the volume is a complete bibliography of Badian's publications. The broadly based yet coherent theme - the momentous changes in systems of power and authority in the ancient Mediterranean world - makes Transitions to Empire an important contribution to Greco-Roman scholarship and a fitting tribute to a scholar whose work has had such a far-reaching influence on the field of ancient history Includes bibliographical references and index

Where Custer fell : photographs of the Little Bighorn Battlefield then and now Brust, James S; Pohanka, Brian C., 1955-; Barnard, Sandy Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, First Edition, 2005-10-31

The Battle of the Little Bighorn has long held an eminent position among the chronicles of the mythic West. None of the men who rode with Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer to his “Last Stand” survived to tell the tale, but this stunning photography book provides a view of the battlefield as it must have existed in 1876.

To create Where Custer Fell, authors James S. Brust, Brian C. Pohanka, and Sandy Barnard searched for elusive documents and photographs, made countless trips to the battlefield, and scrutinized all available sources. Each chapter begins with a concise, lively description of an episode in the battle. The narratives are graphically illustrated by historical photos, which are presented alongside modern photos of the same location on the battlefield. The book also features detailed maps and photographs of battle participants and the early photographers who attempted to tell their story.

Though not blind to Abraham Lincoln's imperfections, Black Americans long ago laid a heartfelt claim to his legacy. At the same time, they have consciously reshaped the sixteenth president's image for their own social and political ends. Frederick Hord and Matthew D. Norman's anthology explores the complex nature of views on Lincoln through the writings and thought of Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Thurgood Marshall, Malcolm X, Gwendolyn Brooks, Barbara Jeanne Fields, Barack Obama, and dozens of others. The selections move from speeches to letters to book excerpts, mapping the changing contours of the bond—emotional and intellectual—between Lincoln and Black Americans over the span of one hundred and fifty years. A comprehensive and valuable reader, Knowing Him by Heart examines Lincoln's still-evolving place in Black American thought. |Introduction Frederick Douglass, Emancipation Day Address at Poughkeepsie, New York, August 2, 1858 Frederick Douglass, "The Chicago Nominations," June, 1860 H. To the gates of Jerusalem : the diaries and papers of James G. McDonald, 1945-1947 James G. McDonald; Peter L. Hahn; Norman J. W. Goda; Barbara McDonald Stewart; Severin Hochberg; Richard Breitman Indiana univ. press in assoc. with the US Holocaust memorial museum, Washington, D. C., Bloomington, Indianapolis, United States, 2015
This volume, the third in a series of James G. McDonald's edited diaries and papers, covers his work from 1945, with the formation of the Anglo-American Committee, through 1947, with the United Nations' decision to partition Palestine between Jews and Arabs. The "Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry Regarding the Problems of European Jewry and Palestine" was a group charged with finding a solution to the problem of European Jewish Refugees in the context of the increasingly unstable British Mandate in Palestine. McDonald's diaries and papers offer the most thorough personal account we have of the Committee and the politics surrounding it. His diary is part travelogue through the desolation of postwar Europe and a Middle East being transformed by new Jewish settlements and growing Arab intransigence. McDonald maintained discreet contact with Zionist and moderate Arab leaders throughout the Committee's hearings and deliberations. He was instrumental in the recommendation that 100,000 Jewish refugees enter Palestine and won President Truman's trust in order to counter attempts to nullify the report's recommendations.-- Provided by Publisher

Comparing Cowboys and Frontiers Slatta, Richard W., 1947- Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1997
This collection of essays functions as a how-to guide to comparative frontier research in the Americas. Frontiers specialist Richard W. Slatta presents topics, techniques, and methods that will intrigue social-science professionals and western-history buffs alike as he explores the frontiers of North and South America from Spanish colonial days into the twentieth century. The always popular cowboy is joined by the fascinating gaucho, llanero, vaquero, and charro as Slatta compares their work techniques, roundups, songs, tack, lingo, equestrian culture, and vices. We visit saloons and pulperias as well as plains and pampas, and Slatta expertly compares clothing, weather, terrain, diets, alcoholic beverages, card games, and military tactics. From primary records we learn how Europeans, Native Americans, and African Americans became the ranch hands, cowmen, and buckaroos of the Americas, and why their dependence on the ranch cattle industry kept them bachelors and landless peons.

When The Road Gets Rough Norman C. Hill Bookcraft Pubs, Salt Lake City, Utah, Utah, 1986
Many Latter-day Saints have cried out to the Lord in anguish when their hopes, dreams, and expectations have been shattered by crises and misfortune. In this book, twelve people recount their confrontations with some of life's most potentially devastating trials: divorce of the "perfect" couple, excommunication, terrorist kidnapping of a missionary, nervous breakdown, old age, singleness in a "married" work, accidental death of a child, substance abuse by a teenager, and life-threatening birth defects.

Goodbye, Judge Lynch: The End Of The Lawless Era In Wyoming's Big Horn Basin John W. Davis Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 2005

The big Horn Basin of northern Wyoming was one of the last frontiers in the continental United States. With settlers did not arrive until 1879, when cattlemen poured into the Basin to capture empty grasslands. In their haste to seize opportunity, the new residents did not establish an effective criminal justice system, and the consequence was rampant violence. In Goodbye, Judge Lynch, John W. Davis tells the fascinating story of how lawlessness finally came to an end in this remote corner of the West.

The cattlemen who arrived in the Big Horn Basin in the 1880s were almost all young men, hardworking but impulsive. Without a legal system to control them, extralegal practices, such as lynching and sheep raids, grew at an alarming rate.

Davis examines murders, assaults, and thefts in the region over the course of three decades, when the problems of prosecution were overwhelming. He highlights the infamous 1902 case of State v. Jim Gormon, in which Gormon, infatuated with his sister-in-law, killed his brother. Although Gormon received a first-degree murder conviction, a shocking breakdown of order ensued, when a mob attacked the Big Horn County jail and killed Gormon, another prisoner, and a deputy sheriff. Six years later, in another infamous case, raiders murdered three sheepherders. Impunity was the immediate result, and the defeat of law and order in the region seemed complete. But authorities fought the odds and finally gained guilty verdicts, the first convictions of sheep raiders in Wyoming. This legal victory marked the end of a brief but powerful vigilante tradition.

The first in-depth assessment of vigilantism and justice in the region, Goodbye, Judge Lynch reveals the unique challenges faced by a western society attempting to build a social system from scratch.

The Threshold Of Democracy: Athens in 403 B.C. (Fourth Edition) (Reacting to the Past) Josiah Ober, Mark Carnes, and Naomi J. Norman W. W. Norton & Company, Incorporated, 4, 2016
"In this updated addition to the Reacting to the Past family, the classroom is transformed into 5th-century Athens, a city divided in the wake of military defeat and open rebellion. With democratic stability uncertain, students must draw from a wide range of perspectives and original source material to approach issues of citizenship, elections, re-militarization, and dissent. Students also engage directly with history through innovative role-playing games, devised by acclaimed pedagogical experts, which develop leadership, speaking, writing, and critical thinking skills in a fun and unique classroom experience"-- Provided by publisher.

Community and tradition : conservative perspectives on the American experience George W. Carey (editor), George W. Carey (contributor), Bruce Frohnen (editor), Norman Barry (contributor), Kenneth L. Grasso (contributor), Peter Augustine Lawler (contributor), Wilfred M. Mcclay (contributor), Barry Alan Shain (contributor), Brad Lowel Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Political theory. Constitutional studies, Lanham, ©1998
Communitarianism is currently the subject of much interest and scrutiny by both liberals and conservatives. In Community and Tradition, eight distinguished scholars articulate the clearest statement to date of the conservative vision of community. In contrast to the progressive model of community, which emphasizes secular civil theologies, government, participatory democracy, and utilitarian moralities, the contributors to this volume identify and locate the roots of friendship and common purpose in tradition, intermediate associations, local autonomy, and religious belief. Not only do the contributors renew and refine the conservative understanding of community, but they also express their belief that the liberal version of community needs to be challenged. This volume is essential reading for all political theorists who study the balance between rights and responsibilities within the context of the community.

White eagle, red star : the Polish-Soviet war 1919-20 and 'the miracle on the Vistula' Norman Davies Vintage Digital, New Ed, 2011
Surprisingly little known, the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-20 was to change the course of twentieth-century history. In __White Eagle, Red Star,__ Norman Davies gives a full account of the War, with its dramatic climax in August 1920 when the Red Army - sure of victory and pledged to carry the Revolution across Europe to 'water our horses on the Rhine' - was crushed by a devastating Polish attack. Since known as the 'miracle on the Vistula', it remains one of the most decisive battles of the Western world. Drawing on both Polish and Russian sources, Norman Davies illustrates the narrative with documentary material which hitherto has not been readily available and shows how the War was far more an 'episode' in East European affairs, but largely determined the course of European history for the next twenty years or more.

Uranium content has been measured in eighty-nine samples from core V29-179 from the North Atlantic. Uranium analyses have been performed by nondestructive neutron activation and by the rapid and precise method of counting delayed neutrons. The sediments display an inverse relationship between uranium and calcium carbonate. When the uranium results are expressed on a carbonate-free basis, the depth distribution is not uniform but has six maxima at various depths which appear to correlate stratigraphically with glacial episodes. Presumably these values are the result of increased continental erosion. The six events occur at approximately \(9000,30,000,60,000,85,000,130,000\) and 150,000 B.P. This detailed uranium profile may prove to be a useful tool for stratigraphic correlations in Pleistocene chronology.
