lgli/Plotinus The Enneads_Cambridge.pdf
The Enneads: Second Edition
Lloyd P. Gerson (editor and translator); George Boys-Stones (translator); John M. Dillon (translator); R. A. H. King (translator); Andrew Smith (translator); James Wilberding (translator)
Cambridge University Press, 2nd, 2025
Plotinus' Enneads is a work which is central to the history of philosophy in late antiquity. This is the second edition of the first English translation of the complete works of Plotinus in one volume in seventy years, which also includes Porphyry's Life of Plotinus. Led by Lloyd P. Gerson, a team of experts present up-to-date translations which are based on the best available text, the edition minor of Henry and Schwyzer and its corrections. The translations are consistent in their vocabulary, making the volume ideal for the study of Plotinus' philosophical arguments. This second edition includes a number of corrections, as well as additional cross-references to enrich the reader's understanding of Plotinus' sometimes very difficult presentation of his ideas. It will be invaluable for scholars of Plotinus with or without ancient Greek, as well as for students of the Platonic tradition.

Immunopharmacology Of Eosinophils
Smith, Harry, D. Sc, Cook, R. M. (richard M.), Humanscells
London ; San Diego: Academic Press, The handbook of immunopharmacology. Cells and mediators, London :, 1993
The Eosinophil Was Identified More Than A Century Ago, And At First Dismissed As, At Best, Just Another Polymorphonuclear Cell. Later, It Was Considered To Play A Pivotal Role In Countering The Potentially Damaging Effects Of Mast Cell Degranulation Via The Production Of Neutralizing Enzymes. Reappraisal Followed With The Demonstration Of Toxic Effects Of The Eosinophil's Cationic Proteins. Instead Of A Cell With Predominantly Beneficial Properties, The Eosinophil Was Seen As Actively Contributing To The Pathogeneisis Of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Such As Asthma. -- Publisher's Information. Yosemite and Sequoia : A Century of California National Parks
Richard J. Orsi (editor); Alfred Runte (editor); Marlene Smith-Baranzini (editor)
University of California Press, "Introduction and first seven essays ... originally published in California History 69, no. 2 (Summer 1990)", reprint 2020, Berkeley, CA, 2020
A century and a quarter ago, the national park idea was born when Abraham Lincoln signed legislation setting aside Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias "for public use, resort, and recreation inalienable for all time." Over the next decade, the Yosemite park commissioners had to fight private land claims to the valley. By 1890, however, a public park system was firmly established in California when the Yosemite high country and much of what is now Sequoia and King's Canyon National Parks were set aside as federally protected, public preserves. This collection of essays and photographs, originally published as a special issue of California History, documents the creation and management of California's first three national parks. As the essays remind us, the issues of park development so hotly debated today were raised first in Yosemite nearly a century ago. Yosemite's significance in landscape art, its role in the development of western tourism, and its promotion as one of the great icons of American culture are among the other major themes discussed here.

Hardtack and coffee: the unwritten story of Army life
Edited by Richard Harwell
Chicago, R. R. Donnelley, The Lakeside classics,, no. 58, Chicago, Illinois, 1960
One of the most important memoirs of the American Civil War, this is also one of the few to describe what life was really like for the common soldier. The author, a Union veteran of the Army of the Potomac, tells of how the men enlisted or were conscripted; how they lived in camp and on the march; what they ate and foraged; how they were equipped and provided for; how they lived, amused themselves, were disciplined and punished, cared for and healed, and ultimately how they died. Written with a wry and gentle sense of humor, and profusely illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings, this book is full of the anecdotes and trivia that made it a best-seller in its day, and a primary source for life in the Civil War ever since.

American Geophysical Union, Field trip guidebook -- T305., Field trip guidebook (International Geological Congress) -- T305., Washington, D.C, District of Columbia, 1989
About The Product Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series . This field trip was conceived as a way to introduce one of the major volcano-tectonic features of the North American continent to visiting scientists from abroad. Its objectives are to allow the participants to observe first hand the geologic relationships relevant to the formation of the Snake River Plain (SRP) and to discuss various interpretations of SRP genesis. The approach to these objectives is to travel the length of the plain from northeast to southwest and to examine in a logical manner, from younger to older volcanic rocks, the relationships important to an understanding of its origin and evolution (Fig. 1). Even though basaltic volcanism is commonly thought of in association with the SRP, this field trip will emphasize the importance of silicic volcanism because of its much greater volume and because of its profound effect on the upper crustal structure of the SRP. Content: Chapter 1 Origin and Development of the Snake River Plain (SRP)—An overview (pages 4–12): William P. Leeman Chapter 2 The Yellowstone Plateau—Island Park region (pages 13–37): Robert L. Christiansen Chapter 3 Explosive basaltic and rhyolitic volcanism of the eastern Snake River Plain (pages 38–47): Lisa A. Morgan and William R. Hackett

The Joseph Smith Papers: Journals, Volume 3: May 1843-June 1844
Andrew H. Hedges (ed.), Alex D. Smith (ed.), Brent M. Rogers (ed.)
The Church Historian’s Press, The Joseph Smith Papers: Journals, vol. 3, 2015
The year before Joseph Smith was murdered is one the most significant periods in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as in the life of the Church's founding prophet. This volume of The Joseph Smith Papers reproduces Joseph Smith's second journal from Nauvoo, Illinois, covering May 1843 through June 1844. During this time, Joseph Smith balanced his role as mayor of Nauvoo with that of Church leader, while simultaneously dealing with conflict from those both within and outside the Church. Accompanied by thorough annotation, the journal transcribed in this volume illuminates Joseph Smith's daily activities, including his and others' continued participation in temple ordinances, his presidential campaign, the creation of the Council of Fifty, and the opposition that eventually led to his violent death in Carthage, Illinois. This is the final volume of the Journals series of The Joseph Smith Papers.

The Joseph Smith Papers. Journals. Volume 2 : December 1841-April 1843
Andrew H. Hedges (ed.), Alex D. Smith (ed.), Richard Lloyd Anderson (ed.)
The Church Historian’s Press, The Joseph Smith Papers: Journals, vol., 2, 1, 2011
The much-anticipated Journals, Volume 2, covers the Nauvoo period from December 1841 to April 30, 1843. Two major documents are featured in this volume:• The journal portion of the Book of the Law of the Lord, which served as a combination journal and temple record book. It includes journal entries on revelations received during this time period, letters written and received, and temple donations. • The first two of four small books titled “President Joseph Smith’s Journal,” kept by Willard Richards during the last years of the Prophet Joseph’s life (the final two books will be published in the forthcoming third and final volume of the Journals series). The journals provide background information about Joseph’s life and early Church history and form the foundation for the official history of the Church. Among the key events described in this volume are the creation of the Relief Society; the building of the Nauvoo Temple; and revelations on the nature of God, and baptism for the dead. Three letters from Emma are also included. These journals provide insights about the Prophet Joseph’s personality, including accounts of him functioning as mayor of Nauvoo, store operator, and general in the Nauvoo legion.

Charmingly insidious and satisfyingly devious, these 100 baffling little mysteries—selected by such prominent authors as Isaac Asimov—are just the thing to suit your most malevolent mood. These tales come from the pen of many well-known writers in the field, including Michael Gilbert, Edward Wellen, Edward D. Hack, Bill Bronzini, Lawrence Treat, and Francis Nevins, Jr. Whether it’s “The Unfriendly Neighbor,” or a “Class Reunion,” “A Recipe for Revenge,” or “An Exercise in Insurance,” these stories are sure to keep you up all night, puzzling over their possible solutions. Each one has its own particular and irresistible appeal: an unexpected twist, a delectable puzzle, a devastating revelation, or perhaps even a refreshing display of pernicious spit Six words / Lew Gillis Little things / Isaac Asimov Matter of life and death / Bill Pronzini and Barry N. Raton, FL: CRC Press/Taylor & Francis Group, Family edition., Raton, FL, Florida, 2015
xxii, 352 pages : 23 cm "Designed to meet the educational needs of families of children with clefts, this book contains chapters written in layperson language that mirror a corresponding chapter in the professional text. The book contains several useful features for families, including a glossary, a timeline for cleft care, and a condensed, lay interpretation of the Parameters of Care. Topics include fundamentals, psychosocial and educational aspects, cleft lip and palate repair, cleft palate speech and hearing, airway and breathing issues, and dental and orthodontic principles. Two parents of cleft-affected children have been recruited as co-editors to help ensure quality content"-- "This new text provides a broad discourse on the basic and clinical sciences that are essential to the understanding, diagnosis, and management of cleft lip and palate. This second edition features chapters on advocacy and social work, a reflection of the unmistakable truth that every cleft-affected individual is not simply a patient but also an integral member of a family and of society. In order to further enhance the educational value of the work to its readers, we have complemented several of the chapters with material in video format. The inclusion of new chapters reflects the necessary and inevitable progression in thought and comprehension within the discipline. While cleft-care providers have long recognized the benefits of interdisciplinary team care, there has been a significant increase in our understanding of the need to practice our art based not upon preference, but upon evidence. The measurement and honest assessment of clinical outcomes is our solemn responsibility to our patients, and it is for this reason that the text has been expanded to include a more thorough discussion of outcomes measurement and comparative evaluation. Perhaps an even more important step in our development as cleft care providers is the realization that the outcomes that deserve our greatest attention are those that truly matter most to our patients themselves and that our care nearly always represents a balance between real or perceived benefits and the costs of their achievement. Hence, we have included chapters that discuss the burden of care and the assessment of what is ultimately the most important outcome for those that we serve: their quality of life"-- Includes bibliographical references and index

Helping People Change : Coaching with Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth
Richard Boyatzis; Melvin L. Smith; Ellen Van Oosten
Boston, Massachusetts: Harvard Business Review Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Boston, 2019
You're trying to help--but is it working?Helping others is a good thing. Often, as a leader, manager, doctor, teacher, or coach, it's central to your job. But even the most well-intentioned efforts to help others can be undermined by a simple truth: We almost always focus on trying to'fix'people, correcting problems or filling the gaps between where they are and where we think they should be. Unfortunately, this doesn't work well, if at all, to inspire sustained learning or positive change. There's a better way. In this powerful, practical book, emotional intelligence expert Richard Boyatzis and Weatherhead School of Management colleagues Melvin Smith and Ellen Van Oosten present a clear and hopeful message. The way to help someone learn and change, they say, cannot be focused primarily on fixing problems, but instead must connect to that person's positive vision of themselves or an inspiring dream or goal they've long held. This is what great coaches do--they know that people draw energy from their visions and dreams, and that same energy sustains their efforts to change, even through difficult times. In contrast, problem-centered approaches trigger physiological responses that make a person defensive and less open to new ideas. The authors use rich and moving real-life stories, as well as decades of original research, to show how this distinctively positive mode of coaching—what they call'coaching with compassion'--opens people up to thinking creatively and helps them to learn and grow in meaningful and sustainable ways.Filled with probing questions and exercises that encourage self-reflection, Helping People Change will forever alter the way all of us think about and practice what we do when we try to help.
