The changing of the guard: Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia (Trinity Review) Mark W. Karlberg The Trinity Foundation, Unicoi, Tenn, Tennessee, 2001
Founded in 1929 by J. Gresham Machen as the institution to carry on the original Biblical instruction of Princeton Seminary, Westminster Seminary has taught, for the past 25 years, a doctrine of justification by our covenant faithfulness and obedience, rather than by the righteousness of Christ alone imputed to those who believe in him. Dr. Karlberg explains how this defection from the faith occurred. A Western Legacy: The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum (Volume 1) (The Western Legacies Series) contributions by Steven L. Grafe ... [et al.]; foreword by Charles P. Schroeder; introduction by David Dary; photography by Ed Muno Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, The Western legacies series ;, v. 1, Norman, Oklahoma, 2005
From its vantage point in Oklahoma City, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum commands a rare view of the American West. In half a century it has grown from a Hall of Fame honoring the American cowboy to a world-class institution housing extraordinary collections of art, artifacts, and archival materials. A Western Legacy celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of this premier museum, offering both an institutional history and a captivating collection of photographs representing its extensive holdings. Opening with a history of the museum by David Dary, A Western Legacy presents for the first time in one volume numerous color images of the museums signature artworks and artifacts, selected for their rarity, superior quality, or historic importance, each accompanied by an interpretive essay. These include examples of western art by Charles M. Russell, Frederic Remington, and others; stunning boots, chaps, and saddles; a diverse selection of traditional and fine art by American Indians; military artifacts; antique photographs; an assortment of rodeo trophies; superlative firearms; and memorabilia from the entertainment world. This volume, which marks the inauguration of The Western Legacies Series, is a stirring testament both to the museums holdings and to the persistence of western heritage in a new century.

Transitions to Empire: Essays in Greco-Roman History, 360-146 B.C., in Honor of E. Badian (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture) E Badian; Robert W Wallace; Edward Monroe Harris University of Oklahoma Press, Oklahoma series in classical culture ;, v. 21, Norman, Oklahoma, 1996
During the period 360-146 B.C., the Greco-Roman world underwent the transition from independent city states and small regional powers to the large and potent empires of the Hellenistic age. The essays in this volume consider various aspects of this central political transformation. The contributors to the volume are students or close working colleagues of Ernst Badian, perhaps the greatest living authority on the period under discussion. Included in the volume is a complete bibliography of Badian's publications. The broadly based yet coherent theme -- the momentous changes in systems of power and authority in the ancient Mediterranean world -- makes Transitions to Empire an important contribution to Greco-Roman scholarship and a fitting tribute to a scholar whose work has had such a far-reaching influence on the field of ancient history.

The Case of Mrs. Surratt : Her Controversial Trial and Execution for Conspiracy in the Lincoln Assassination Guy W. Moore University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, Oklahoma, 1954
On The Hot, Windless July 7 Of 1865, Mary E. Surratt, Who Had Been Found Guilty Of Complicity In The Assassination Of President Lincoln, Was Hanged With Three Of The Men Who Had Participated In The Plot. When Mrs. Surratt Was Hanged, Almost No One Doubted Her Guilt. It Was An Accepted Fact That She Had Given Aid To John Wilkes Booth. And It Was Generally Believed That, At Her Washington Boardinghouse, She Kept The Nest That Hatched The Egg. But The Execution Was Hardly Over When There Were Murmurs That Mrs. Surratt Was Not Guilty. With The Passing Of Time And The Appearance Of Evidence That Tends To Discredit The Testimony Of The Chief Witnesses Against Her, The Verdict Of Guilt Has Come Increasingly Under Fire. Partisan Writers And Speakers Have Attempted To Establish Her Guilt Or Innocence, But Until Publication Of This Volume No One Had Made A Complete And Unbiased Presentation Of The Evidence. What, Then, Is The Truth About Mrs. Surratt? Was She Guilty Or Innocent? In This Book, Guy W. Moore Presents An Objective, Impartial Review Of The Case To Establish, So Far As Possible, The Truth Of Mrs. Surratt's Position. Moore Takes Into Consideration The People And The Events With Which Mrs. Surratt Was Involved In The Days Preceding The Assassination And On That Fateful Day Itself; He Interprets The Official Stenographic Report Of The Assassination Trial And The Diaries And Papers Of People Concerned With The Trial. From These Sources, Along With The Reports In Contemporary Newspapers And Periodicals, He Presents Evidence Designed To Clarify The Controversy Which Has Raged About The Name Of Mrs. Surratt Since Her Death That Scorching Friday Afternoon In 1865.

The walk : notes on a romantic image Robinson, Jeffrey Cane, 1943- Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1989
The Walk, a meditation on walking and on the literature of walking, ruminates on this pervasive, even commonplace, modern image. It is not so much an argument as a journey along the path of literature, noting the occasions and settings, the pleasures and possibilities of different types of walking--through the country or city, during day or night, alone or with someone--and the literatures--the poems, essays, stories, novels, and diaries--walking has produced. Jeffrey C. Robinson's discussion is less criticism than appreciation: with an autobiographical bent, he leads the reader through Romantic, modern, and contemporary literature to show us the shared pleasures of reading, writing, and walking.

Improving American Indian health care : the western Cherokee experience William C. Steeler; Gary W. Shannon; Rashid L. Bashshur Norman, Okla.: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, Okla, 2001

Indicators point to continuing lower health status among Native Americans as compared to the general population. Just a decade ago, the mortality rate of Native Americans was 37 percent greater than the rate for the general population, and Native Americans are still more likely to suffer from diabetes, tuberculosis, alcoholism, depression, and suicide.

To address the basic health concerns of all Native Americans, this book examines the response of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma to critical medical issues. After 1976, the Cherokee Nation aggressively addressed inadequate levels of health services for tribal members and better coordinated efforts to deal with the health problems of their population.

Improving American Indian Health Care shares the Western Cherokee experience so that other tribal governments may adopt or adapt the approaches particularly suitable to their own circumstances.

Karl Bodmer's America Revisited: Landscape Views Across Time (Volume 9) (The Charles M. Russell Center Series on Art and Photography of the American West) Robert M. Lindholm; W. Raymond Wood; David C. Hunt University of Oklahoma Press, The Charles M. Russell Center Series on Art and Photography of the American West, 2013
Less than thirty years after Lewis and Clark completed their epic journey, Prince Maximilian of Wied—a German naturalist—and his entourage set off on their own daring expedition across North America. Accompanying the prince on this 1832–34 voyage was Swiss artist Karl Bodmer, whose drawings and watercolors—designed to illustrate Maximilian’s journals—now rank among the great treasures of nineteenth-century American art. This lavishly illustrated book juxtaposes Bodmer’s landscape images with modern-day photographs of the same views, allowing readers to see what has changed, and what seems unchanged, since the time Maximilian and Bodmer made their storied trip up the Missouri River. To discover how the areas Bodmer depicted have changed over time, photographer Robert M. Lindholm and anthropologist W. Raymond Wood made several trips over a period of years, from 1985 to 2002, to locate and record the same sites—all the way from Boston Harbor, where Maximilian and Bodmer began their journey, to Fort McKenzie, in modern-day western Montana. Pairing sixty-seven Bodmer works side by side with Lindholm’s photographs of the same sites, this volume uses the comparison of old and new images to reveal alterations through time—and the encroachment of a built environment—across diverse landscapes. __Karl Bodmer’s America__ __Revisited__ is at once a tribute to the artistic achievements of a premier landscape artist and a photographer who followed in his footsteps, and a valuable record of America’s ever-changing environment.

Conflict, controversy, and co-operation : the Irish Council of Churches and 'The Troubles' 1968-1972 Norman W. Taggart Columba Press, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, 2004
"This is the story of the Irish Council of Churches between 1968 and 1972, the first four years of 'The Troubles'. It contains important new material and traces the first formal contacts between the Irish Council of Churches, its member churches and the Roman Catholic Church." "Sharp differences of opinion and tensions arose and were faced. Opposition to the introduction of internment was intense within the Catholic community - and indeed within Protestantism especially in the South. This opposition is explored fully in this book. The role of the joint Catholic/Protestant group on social problems is also covered, as is the role of another largely unpublicised Catholic and Protestant body, set up in confidence to advise church leaders on the developing crisis in Northern Ireland. The latter has not previously been discussed in detail. As a body it considered and took action on highly contentious issues like Catholic grievances, Protestant fears and allegations of police and prison brutality." "The leadership of the ICC was of the highest order over the period, with Dr. Eric Gallagher (Methodist), Principal James Haire (Presbyterian) and Archbishop George Simms (the Church of Ireland) its successive chairmen. Cardinal Conway of the Catholic Church was found to be a person willing to take and respond to initiatives involving other churches. Ecumenism was still widely viewed as an irrelevance, a dangerous perversion of the gospel or an issue too hot to handle. Those involved in ecumenism in the North ran the risk of ridicule, threats and abuse. Yet these proved to be ground-breaking days for ecumenism as the Northern Ireland crisis came to the boil and Protestant and Catholic relations in Ireland took important steps forward."--BOOK JACKET

Waiting for the fireworks : selected stories Sage, Norman, 1910- Columbia, S.C.: University of South Carolina Press, Columbia, S.C, South Carolina, 1995
Meet Norman Sage - an eloquent, witty, eighty-something-year-old man who writes passionate stories about life, love, loss, and community in rural America. One of a handful of octogenarians writing truly exceptional short fiction, Sage balances gracefully between intimacy and distance as he evokes the loneliness, fear of death, and sexual yearnings that face a man nearing the end of his life. In these fourteen works of fiction, Sage is driven to reflect on the joys and defeats of romantic love in all its myriad incarnations - loves of childhood and youth, love of a wife long dead, love of other women real and imagined, love of women met too late in life. He is painfully honest in acknowledging his longing for love and for companionship and in assessing the likelihood of his finding either. With a mixture of humor and regret, he depicts the bittersweet almost-romances of his later years. Together his reflections portray a spectrum of worthy female characters as well as a progression of male characters who live in the company of such astonishing, intelligent, valiant women.
