Religion and the rise of capitalism: a historical study by R.H. Towney Gloucester, Mass.: P. Smith, Holland memorial lectures ;, 1922, Gloucester, Mass, Massachusetts, 1962
"In one of the classics of twentieth-century political economy, R.H. Tawney addresses the question of how religion has affected social and economic practices. He does this by a relentless tracking of the influence of religious thought on capitalist economy and ideology since the Middle Ages. In so doing he sheds light on why Christianity continues to exert a unique role in the marketplace. In so doing, the book offers an incisive analysis of the historical background of present morals and mores in Western culture."--Jacket.

The Song-Yuan-Ming Transition in Chinese History (Harvard East Asian Monographs) Paul Jakov Smith; Richard von Glahn; Christine J. Loomis; Peter K. Bol Harvard University Asia Center : Distributed by Harvard University Press, Brill Academic Publishers, [Place of publication not identified], 2020
This volume seeks to study the connections between two well-studied epochs in Chinese history: the mid-imperial era of the Tang and Song (ca. 800-1270) and the late imperial era of the late Ming and Qing (1550-1900). Both eras are seen as periods of explosive change, particularly in economic activity, characterized by the emergence of new forms of social organization and a dramatic expansion in knowledge and culture. The task of establishing links between these two periods has been impeded by a lack of knowledge of the intervening Mongol Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). This historiographical'black hole'has artificially interrupted the narrative of Chinese history and bifurcated it into two distinct epochs. This book aims to restore continuity to that historical narrative by filling the gap between mid-imperial and late imperial China. The contributors argue that the Song-Yuan-Ming transition (early twelfth through the late fifteenth century) constitutes a distinct historical period of transition and not one of interruption and devolution. They trace this transition by investigating such subjects as contemporary impressions of the period, the role of the Mongols in intellectual life, the economy of Jiangnan, urban growth, neo-Confucianism and local society, commercial publishing, comic drama, and medical learning.

Historically inevitable? : turning points of the Russian Revolution Tony Brenton; Donald Crawford; Sean McMeekin; Dominic Lieven; Orlando Figes; Richard Sakwa; Douglas Smith; Martin Sixsmith; Simon Dixon; Boris Kolonitsky; Richard Pipes; Edvard Radzinsky; Catriona Kelly; Erik Landis; Evan Mawdsley Profile Books Ltd, London, United Kingdom, 2016
Marx held that the progression of society from capitalism to communism was 'historically inevitable'. In Russia in 1917, it seemed that Marx's theory was being born out in reality. But was the Russian Revolution really inevitable? This collection of fourteen contributions from the world's leading Russian scholars attempts to answer the question by looking back at the key turning points of the revolution. From the Russo-Japanese conflict of 1904-5 through to the appropriation of church property in 1922, and focusing especially on the incredible chain of events in 1917 leading to the October Revolution itself, Historically Inevitable? is a forensic account of Russia's road to revolution. Each contribution gives not only a fast-paced, incisive narrative account of an individual aspect of Revolution but also, for the first time, an intriguing counter-factual analysis of what might have gone differently. Featuring Richard Pipes on the Kornilov affair, Orlando Figes on the October Revolution, Dominic Lieven on foreign intervention and Martin Sixsmith on the attempted assassination of Lenin in 1918, Historically Inevitable? explains how each of these moments, more through blind luck than any historical inevitability, led to the creation of the world's first communist state. Tony Brenton's afterword to the volume draws parallels between the Revolution and the ultimate collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and places the events of 1917 in the context of more recent events in Russia and the Crimea. Featuring contributions from: Donald Crawford - Sean McMeekin - Dominic Lieven - Orlando Figes - Richard Sakwa - Douglas Smith - Martin Sixsmith - Simon Dixon - Boris Kolonitsky - Richard Pipes - Edvard Radzinsky - Catriona Kelly - Erik Landis - Evan Mawdsley

Theatre Symposium, Vol. 12: Elizabethan Performance in North American Spaces (Theatre Symposium Series) Susan Kattwinkel; M. Scott Phillips; Aaron David Anderson; David Carlyon; Susan S Cole; Sarah Alexandra Ferguson; Richard L Hay; Franklin J Hildy; Richard H Palmer; Johanna Lee Schmitz; Vanessa Schormann; Annie Smith; Kevin J Wetmore Published By The Southeastern Theatre Conference And The University Of Alabama Press, Theatre Symposium Series, August 17, 2004

Explores the ways that North Americans have presented Elizabethan plays throughout history and the spaces in which they have chosen to present them.

The essays in this collection were selected from among papers delivered at the April 2003 Southeastern Theatre Conference’s annual symposium held at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. They focus on the uses and development of various North American spaces for the production of Elizabethan, primarily Shakespearean, plays. Contributors cover historical topics from the Elizabethan Revival to postmodern productions, performance genres from popular theatre to solo performance to the "original practices" movement, and performance spaces from reconstructed Elizabethan theatres to found space. Discussions of physical spaces inform issues of language, style, costume, and design.

Despite the wide variety of topics, the same concepts arise again and again: authenticity, minimalism of design, audience behavior and reaction, legitimizing factors of reconstruction and performance, and issues surrounding the variety of approaches to the production of Elizabethan theatre in North America. The volume concludes with an excerpt from the closing discussion by the conference’s keynote speakers, Franklin J. Hildy and Vanessa Schomann.

Wells, Erich Maria Remarque, Tolstoy, Leo, graf, 1828-1910, Joseph Heller, Richard Alexander Hough, Stephen Crane, Airey Neave, Robert Graves, David Niven, Joseph Conrad, Larry Forrester, Norman Mailer, Cecil Woodham Smith, Ambrose Bierce, P. C. Wren, Nicholas Monsarrat, William Makepeace Thackeray, Guy Gibson, Frederic Manning London: Treasure Press, London, 1988, ©1983
This exciting anthology combines in one volume many of the best war stories ever written, both real-life and fictional. From the romantic grandeur of the Napoleonic era to the dehumanising horrors of the two World Wars, from Europe to Africa, the collection spans two centuries and even extends into the future. Stories by famous war writers like Nicholas Monsarrat and Alistair MacLean stand in company with those of authors better known in other areas, for example H. G. Wells' terrifying picture of England under threat of Martian invasion and Ambrose Bierce's eerie mystery of the American Civil War. The panoramic vista of the clashing armies of Russia and France at Borodino is graphically described by Tolstoy. By contrast, there is the personal drama of H.E. Bates' love story Fair Stood the Wind For France, and the maniacal savagery of the trail blazing novel of war realism, The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer. This varied and entertaining assortment of stories and extracts, reflecting the breadth and depth of human experience in time of war, provides cornFElling and satisfying reading.

West Harvard University Asia Center : Distributed by Harvard University Press, Harvard East Asian monographs -- 221, Cambridge, MA, Massachusetts, 2003

This historiographical "black hole" has artificially interrupted the narrative of Chinese history and bifurcated it into two distinct epochs.

This volume aims to restore continuity to that historical narrative by filling the gap between mid-imperial and late imperial China.

Race amity : America's other tradition ; a primer Smith, William H, Thomas, Richard W WHS Media Productions LLC, Sudbury, Massachusetts, 2019
Race Amity, America's Other Tradition - A Primer This Book Seeks To Impact The Public Discourse On Race - To Move It From The Blame/grievance/rejection Cycle To One Of Amity/collaboration/access And Equity. Most Discussions Focus Exclusively On Racist Traditions, We Look At The Always Present Moral Counterweight Of Close, Loving, Friendship And Collaboration, Which Is The Other Tradition. This Primer Is Written To Provide An Introduction To An Unexplored Perspective For Study, To Be Followed By Taking Action Around The Concept Of The Other Tradition, To Address Our Country's Most Vital And Challenging Issue, Racial And Cultural Prejudice. The Writers Fervently Wish That Those Taking The Time To Read, Study, And Discuss These Pages Will Be Moved To Continue Their Journey In Moral Service Towards E Pluribus Unum, With Assurance From That Simple Axiom, Right Is Might. The Thesis Of The Other Tradition Is Based On Historical Observation And Moral Truths Which Are The Framework Of This Primer. The Original Thesis Of The Other Tradition Was Put Forth In Understanding Interracial Unity -a Study Of U.s. Race Relations, Published In 1996 By Primer Co-author Richard W. Thomas. The Other Tradition Is Those Actions That Have Taken Place During The Course Of Our National History That Are Based On The Moral Principle Of The Organic Oneness And Unity Of Humankind. The Other Tradition Has Been A Constant Parallel Counterweight To The Social Construction Of Racism In America. A Key Element Of The Other Tradition And The Propellant For Its Success Is Amity. Amity Is One Of The Hallmarks Of The Other Tradition. In The Context Of Human Relationships, It Is Easily Understood Why Amity Or, More Familiarly, Friendship, Is A Central Ingredient To The Conduct Of Progressive Action For Racial Equity And Justice. This Is Because There Are Two Primary Affinity Relationships In Human Affairs. The First Is Love And Caring For Family. The Second Is Love And Caring For Friends. To The Extent That Amity Exists Among People, There Is A Genuine Commitment And Support That Includes Willingness To Take Risks And Engage In Personal Sacrifice. The Primer Offers Details On This Dynamic In Historic Occurrences. Along The Way, We Offer The Reader The Opportunity To Reflect On These Events And Instruction They Offer To The Conduct Of Contemporary Work To Promote Access, Equity, And Social Justice. We Are Well Aware That We Must Be Cautious In Advancing This Historical Theory Of American Race Relations. Our Purpose Is Simply To Share Historical Examples Of Interracial And Multiracial Cooperation, Harmony, And Amity As Lessons For Fostering Racial Amity In Contemporary America. The Primer's Intent Is That The Reader Will Be Reinforced In Resolve To Take Ongoing Action To Insure The Continuation Of This Dynamic, Which Is Critical To Overcoming Racial And Cultural Prejudice. Willam H. Smith, Ed. Drichard W. Thomas, Ph. D.
