nexusstc/From Marx to the Market: Socialism in Search of an Economic System/1970c136c7525f27d19f9ef9c6187c69.pdf
From Marx to the Market : Socialism in Search of an Economic System Wlodzimierz Brus and Kazimierz Laski Clarendon Press ; Oxford University Press, January 18, 1990
Distinguished economists Brus and Laski--who were involved with the Planning Office of the Polish economy in the 1950s and 1960s--here develop a theoretical system of economic management which avoids the failings of both market capitalism and central planning. This book examines Marxists claim to socialism's economic rationality and studies the application of the concept in the real socialism of Communist party orthodoxy as well as in the tentative attempts at market socialism, particularly in Hungary and Yugoslavia. The analysis focuses on general features of the evolution of the socialist economic system, but national experiences are used to point out the advances that have been made and the flaws in the theoretical models that have been developed. "the enormous experience of the authors and the intellectual quality of their analysis make it a book which deserves to last" —William Outhwaite, University of Sussex, __Political Studies, Volume XXXIX Number 1 March 1991__ "The analysis presented in the book is highly penetrating. It remains of immediate practical relevance despite the acceleration in the pace of systematic change in Eastern Europe over the last year." —Antoni Chawluk, University of St. Andrews, __Scottish Journal of Political Economy__ "This book is a welcome addition to the literature on Eastern European economies in particular, and the notion of an "economically feasible socialism" in general. It is well written and concise, with just enough background information on the history of economic development in Eastern Europe to prepare the reader for the authors' new contributions." —__The Polish Review__ **Wlodzimierz Brus** is at St Antony's College. Kazimierz Laski is at Johann Kepler University of Linz. **Kazimierz Łaski** was a Polish-Austrian economist. During the antisemitic purge of 1968 Łaski had to leave Poland and moved to Austria, where he worked for the rest of his life and was widely recognized as a major contributor to Post-Keynesian economics.

A patristic Greek lexicon: (in 5fascicles). Fascicle 5, Prokataug'axō-Ōchria, Addenda et corrigenda G. W. H Lampe; Henry George Liddell IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Oxford, United Kingdom, 1968
xlix, 1568 pages ; 28 cm "This volume contains the complete text of A Patristic Greek Lexicon, previously published in five separate fascicles. The object of the work is primarily to interpret the theological and ecclesiastical vocabulary of the Greek Christian authors from Clement of Rome to Theodore of Studium. These limits, although by necessity somewhat arbitrary, have been drawn with the object of confining the Lexicon, as far as possible, to the formative period of the history of Christian thought and institutions, beginning in the subapostolic age and embracing the whole era of the Creeds, the Councils down to the Second Council of Nicaea, and the great doctrinal disputes down to the Iconoclastic Controversy. All words illustrating the development of Christian thought and institutions have been treated as fully as possible, with extensive citations of the more important relevant passages. This lexicon is a companion to Liddell-Scott-Jones, A Greek English Lexicon, but the two do not overlap. No word that is well attested in the Liddell and Scott and that has no particular interest for the readers of the Fathers is included here"--Jacket Includes bibliographical references Previously published in fascicles Companion volume to A Greek-English lexicon by H.G. Liddell and R. Scott as revised by H.S. Jones

`McCormack is master of this voluminous material. He is scrupulously at home in the intricate, dramatic background of Swiss socialist politics...The result is a masterly study, often as compelling as its theme.'George Steiner, Times Literary Supplement `This meticulous and definitive study... supersedes most previous interpretations.'Colin Gunton, Theological Book Review `it should quickly attain classic status. It is an exceptionally fine and erudite piece of work....The results of this painstaking attention to detail are truly ground-breaking. This is a major intellectual achievement, an interpretative act of great courage, and Barth studies will never look the same.'Graham Ward, Expository Times This book is a new, major intellectual biography of perhaps the most influential theologian of the twentieth century, Karl Barth. It offers the first full-scale revision of the well-known theologian Hans Urs Balthasar's seminal interpretation of Barth, which was first published in 1951. Drawing on a wealth of material, much of it unpublished during Barth's lifetime, as well as a thorough acquaintance with the best of recent German scholarship, Professor McCormack demonstrates that the fundamental decision which would control the whole of Barth's development - the turn to a new, critically realistic form of theological objectivism - was already made during the years in which Barth was at work on his first commentary on Romans. Professor McCormack further argues that the most significant subsequent decisions - both material and methodological - were made in Barth's Gottingen Dogmatics of 1924/5, and not later in the 1931 book on Anselm, as has often been alleged. Finally, he seeks to show that von Balthasar's description of a turn from dialectic to analogy, which provided the foundation for the neo-orthodox reading of Barth in the English-speaking world, fails to take seriously enough the extent to which dialectic remained a constitutive feature of Barth's outlook in the Church Dogmatics. This unique and important work provides not simply a fresh interpretation of Barth's development, but also a new paradigm for understanding the whole of Barth's theology.

Riches and Renunciation: Religion, Economy, and Society Among the Jains (Oxford Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology) James Laidlaw Oxford University Press, USA, February 22, 1996
How can one live by impossible ideals and values? The Jains of India are a flourishing and prosperous community, but their religion is focused on the teaching and example of ascetic renouncers, whose austere regime is actually dedicated to ending worldly life and often culminates in a fast to death. This book draws upon a detailed study of an urban Jain community in Jaipur, north-west India, to offer the fullest account yet given of Jain religious belief and practice. It shows how renunciation and asceticism play a central part in the life of a thriving business community, and how world-renunciation combines for Jain families with the pursuit of worldly happiness. The book is in five parts. Part I introduces the vivid mythology and doctrine of Jainism, and the traditions of Jain renouncers. Part II discusses the relations of Jains with other groups in Indian society, the politics of leadership on Jain communities, and the history, character, and composition of the Jain community in Jaipur. This book is intended for anthropologists and sociologists, especially those interested in or working on South Asia or religion; scholars in comparative religious studies; anyone interested in Indian religion or society, including Jains themselves.

From Marx to the Market : Socialism in Search of an Economic System Wlodzimierz Brus and Kazimierz Laski Clarendon Press ; Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 1989
BL With a new preface by the authors This is an important work of original scholarship by two of the most distinguished East European economists now working in the West. The authors, both of whom were involved in the Planning Office of the Polish economy in the 1950s and 1960s, present here the results of their efforts to develop theoretically a system of economic management which could in practice avoid the worst excesses of both market capitalism and central planning. The conclusions derived from this analysis are shown to open up a new dimension to the `socialism versus capitalism'controversy which has dominated much of the world throughout the twentieth century and which is especially significant as the countries of East and Central Europe re-structure their economies.

The Tragedy of Coriolanus: The Oxford Shakespeare The Tragedy of Coriolanus William Shakespeare; R B Parker Oxford: Clarendon Press ; New York: Oxford University Press, The World's classics, The Oxford Shakespeare, Oxford, New York, England, 1994
"This generously annotated updated edition of Coriolanus provides a thorough reconsideration of Shakespeare's remarkable, and probably his last, tragedy. A substantial introduction situates the play within its contemporary social and political contexts - dearth, riots, the struggle over authority between James I and his first parliament, the travails of Essex and Ralegh - and pays particular attention to Shakespeare's shaping of his primary source in Plutarch's Lives. It presents a fresh account of how the protagonist's personal tragedy evolves within Shakespeare's most searching exploration of the political life of a community. The edition is alert throughout to the play's theatrical potential, while the stage history also attends to the politics of performance from the 1680s onwards, including European productions following the Second World War. A new introductory section by Bridget Escolme covers recent productions of Coriolanus, and criticism of the last ten years, with particular focus on gender and the play's politics"--Provided by publisher.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Unknown; J.R.R. Tolkien; E.V. Gordon; Norman Davis IRL Press at Oxford University Press, 1968
‘Be prepared to perform what you promised, Gawain; Seek faithfully till you find me ...’ A New Year’s feast at King Arthur’s court is interrupted by the appearance of a gigantic Green Knight, resplendent on horseback. He challenges any one of Arthur’s men to behead him, provided that if he survives he can return the blow a year later. Sir Gawain accepts the challenge and decapitates the knight – but the mysterious warrior cheats death and vanishes, bearing his head with him. The following winter Gawain sets out to find the Knight in the wild Northern lands and to keep his side of the bargain. One of the great masterpieces of Middle English poetry, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight magically combines elements of fairy tale and heroic sagas with the pageantry, chivalry and courtly love of medieval Romance. Brian Stone’s evocative translation is accompanied by an introduction that examines the Romance genre, and the poem’s epic and pagan sources. This edition also includes essays discussing the central characters and themes, theories about authorship and Arthurian legends, and suggestions for further reading and notes.

Joseph Andrews (Wesleyan Edition of The Works of Henry Fielding) Henry Fielding; edited by Martin C. Battestin Middletown, Conn.: Wesleyan University Press ; Scranton, Pa.: Distributed by Harper & Row, The Wesleyan edition of the works of Henry Fielding, Middletown, Conn, Scranton, Pa, Connecticut, 1984
"Joseph Andrews: Hero and shortened title of The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and of his friend, Mr Abraham Adams, written in Imitation of the Manner of Cervantes, a novel by Henry Fielding. Joseph Andrews, a prudent, brawny, pleasant young man, is intended to be the brother of Samuel Richardson's heroine Pamela. His widowed employer, Lady Booby, dismisses him from his position as footman for refusing her advances, and he flees London to rejoin his own true love, Fanny Goodwill. On hearing the news of his disgrace, Fanny rushes to meet him. Both are set upon by thieves but are providentially rescued by Parson Adams, and the three return to their parish, where Joseph and Fanny, after comic-opera reversals and discoveries, are married in triumph. The time of the novel is coincident with Pamela, which it parodies and transcends."- - from Benet's Readers Encyclopedia, Fourth Edition
