Computational Complexity : A Conceptual Perspective Oded Goldreich Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1 edition, May 31, 2008
Complexity theory is a central field of the theoretical foundations of computer science. It is concerned with the general study of the intrinsic complexity of computational tasks; that is, it addresses the question of what can be achieved within limited time (and/or with other limited natural computational resources). This book offers a conceptual perspective on complexity theory. It is intended to serve as an introduction for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, either as a textbook or for self-study. The book will also be useful to experts, since it provides expositions of the various sub-areas of complexity theory such as hardness amplification, pseudorandomness and probabilistic proof systems. In each case, the author starts by posing the intuitive questions that are addressed by the sub-area and then discusses the choices made in the actual formulation of these questions, the approaches that lead to the answers, and the ideas that are embedded in these answers.

[Article] The Ambangulu Forest, West Usambara Mountains, Tanzania: a threatened Eastern Arc forest Goodman, Steven M.; Stanley, William T.; Newmark, William D.; Howell, Kim M. John Wiley and Sons; Cambridge University Press; Cambridge University Press (CUP) (ISSN 0030-6053), Oryx, #3, 29, pages 212-214, 1995 jul
Ambangulu Forest is one of the few remaining tracts of natural forest between 800 and 1200 m in the West Usambara Mountains of Tanzania. It may be the biologically richest area in the region but it is threatened by illegal felling of timber trees, wind damage, grazing and browsing livestock, and collection of fuel-wood and building poles. A proposed project aims to protect the forest and benefit local people at the same time.

Planar or Two-Dimensional Rigid Body Impact Impact Mechanics
Only those bodies which are absolutely hard (elastic) are exactly reflected according to these rules. Now the bodies here amongst us (being an aggregate of smaller bodies) have a relenting softnesse and springynesse, which makes their contact be for some time and in more points than one. And the touching surfaces during the time of contact doe slide one upon another more or lesse or not at all according to their roughnesse. And few or none of these bodyes have a springynesse soe strong as to force them one from another with the same vigor that they came together.

lgli/Pavan Kumar Malreddy - Insurgent Cultures_World Literatures and Violence from the Global South.pdf
Insurgent Cultures: World Literatures and Violence from the Global South Pavan Kumar Malreddy Cambridge University Press, 2024
Moving beyond the normative frames of terrorism and counter-terrorism, this book shows how world literatures from the Global South can be used to examine the multiple modalities of violence that pervade contemporary world politics, such as communalism, factionalism, peasant wars, banditry, nationalist struggles, resource wars and acts of vengeance. The comparative approach of this book enables a theoretical realignment of insurgency from the mobilization of violence for grand, mythic, and ideological causes – as seen through the eyes of the state – to the violence for small causes, namely, the splintered violence conjured under conceptual rubrics such as divine violence, intimate violence, routine violence, everyday violence, inherited violence, and subterranean violence. Analyzing novels, autobiographies, journalistic accounts from key regions, such as Nigeria, Myanmar (Burma), India, and the Middle East, Insurgent Cultures provides a new understanding of the narratives of violence in the Global South.

Beckett and Derrida James Martell Cambridge University Press, Elements in Beckett Studies, 2024
Uncannily similar projects, Beckett’s and Derrida’s oeuvres have been linked by literary and philosophy scholars since the 1990s. Taking into consideration their shared historical and personal contexts as writers whose main language of expression was ‘adopted’ or ‘imposed’, this Element proposes a systematic reading of their main points of connection. Focusing on their engagement with the intricacies of beginnings and origins, on genetic grounds or surfaces analogous to the Platonic khôra, and on their similar critiques of the aporias of sovereignty, it exposes the reasons why multiple readers, like Coetzee, consider Derridean deconstruction a philosophical mirror of Beckett’s literary achievements.

Discourse and Ideologies of the Radical Right Teun A. van Dijk Cambridge University Press, Elements in Critical Discourse Studies, 2024
There has been much scholarly attention for the radical right, especially in political science. Unfortunately, this research pays less attention to the discourse of the radical right, a topic especially studied by scholars in discourse studies. Especially lacking in this research in various disciplines is a theoretically based analysis of ideology. This Element first summarizes the author’s theory of ideology and extends it with a new element needed to account for the ideological clusters of political parties. Then a systematic analysis is presented of the discourses and ideologies of radical right parties in Chile, Spain, the Netherlands, and Sweden. From a comparative perspective it is concluded that radical right discourse and ideologies adapt to the economic, cultural, sociopolitical, and historical contexts of each country.

Describing Scientific Outcomes Evgeny Klochikhin; Kaye Husbands Fealing Measuring the Economic Value of Research
Academic publications play an increasing role in assessing the results of science funding and evaluating academic performance. National evaluation frameworks, such as the Research Excellence Framework in the United Kingdom, 1 assign much weight to publication outputs and journal ratings in their evaluation of individual institutions (and researchers). "Publish or Perish" is a phrase that is typically used to describe the increasing pressure on academia to publish rapidly and continually to sustain their careers (1). Bibliometrics and library science are the major disciplines looking at publications and producing citation and coauthor analysis to understand the value and level of scientific activities and collaborations (2).Scientific papers are also important as a source of policy governance: agencies and legislatures look for evidence to guide their rule-making and legislative efforts. Food safety research can support the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and US Congress in setting food policy priorities and enforcing regulations where they are needed most. This chapter looks at food safety-related publications, representative of this research. Using the method described in Chapter 4, information retrieval techniques were applied to conduct a systematic search of food safety documents across several databases and further analyze them from the perspective of funding acknowledgments and topical bias. The chapter describes the landscape of food safety research and benchmarks these scientific outputs with the funding inputs described in Chapter 4. The method also seeks to address two major weaknesses of 157 Core terms of use, available at https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms.

Consonantal systems The Sounds of French, 1987
This chapter is devoted to a comparative survey of the French and English consonantal systems, and to an examination of the most important articulatory differences between phonetically close consonants in these systems. The fundamentally distinct properties of / and r in the two languages warrant a separate chapter for these two consonants (Chapter 9). In Chapter 10, we shall consider questions internal to French regarding the pronunciation of double consonants and final consonants. Finally, in Chapter 11, we shall examine the phenomenon of liaison, which was already touched on in the discussion of nasal vowels in Chapter 5.use, available at https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms.

Decoding Terrorism: An Interdisciplinary Approach to a Lone-Actor Case Julia Kupper, Marie Bojsen-Møller, Tanya Karoli Christensen, Dakota Wing, Marcus Papadopulos, Sharon Smith Cambridge University Press, Elements in Forensic Linguistics, 2024
This Element is an interdisciplinary analysis of the language evidence produced before, during and following a lone-actor terrorism attack that occurred in Halle, Germany, on October 9, 2019, resulting in two casualties. During his final preparations, the perpetrator, twenty-seven-year-old Stephan Balliet, announced his attack online and disseminated a targeted violence manifesto shortly before live-streaming his premeditated act. This post-hoc investigation introduces a multi-method approach that synchronizes well-established qualitative methodologies for forensic text analysis – genre, text linguistics, appraisal and uptake – to elucidate these data types. Furthermore, a retroactive threat assessment based on language data from the trial transcripts provides a holistic review of the assailant’s background, red flags, triggering events and warning behaviors that could have signaled his movements along the pathway to violence. The results are considered in an organizational context to highlight current challenges faced by security agencies when mitigating the risk of lone-actors who radicalize in online environments.

lgli/the-normativity-of-law.pdf
The Normativity of Law Michael Giudice Cambridge University Press, Cambridge Elements, Elements in Philosophy of Law, 2024
In the philosophy of law there has been a proliferation of advanced work in the last thirty years on the normativity of law. Recent theories explore law's character as a special kind of convention, shared cooperative activity, and social artifact, among other perspectives, to explain the precise way in which law provides subjects with reasons for action. Yet, for all their sophistication, such accounts fail to deliver on their promise, which is to establish how law creates more than just legal reasons for action. This Element aims to survey these views and others, situate them in a broader context of theories about the nature of law, and subsequently suggest a path forward based on the methodological continuity between analytical, evaluative, and empirical approaches to law's normativity.

lgli/biological-organization.pdf
Biological Organization Leonardo Bich Cambridge University Press, Cambridge Elements, Elements in the Philosophy of Biology, 2024
Living systems are complex systems made of components that tend to degrade, but nonetheless they maintain themselves far from equilibrium. This requires living systems to extract energy and materials from the environment and use them to build and repair their parts by regulating their activities based on their internal and external conditions in ways that allow them to keep living. The philosophical and theoretical approach discussed in this Element aims to explain these features of biological systems by appealing to their organization. It addresses classical and more recent issues in philosophy of biology, fromorigins and definitions of life to biological teleology and functions, from an original perspective mainly focused on the living system, its physiology and behavior, rather than evolution. It discusses and revises the conceptual foundations of this approach and presents an updated version of it. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

The semi-vowel and consonant systems Modern Irish, 1989
The semi-vowel and consonant systems 4.1 Semi-vowels Some sounds in Irish have a very limited usage in actual pronunciation. A good example is the fact that /y/ is needed only initially in Irish (as opposed to Scottish Gaelic where it is found non-initially). Another example is the fact that while slender dhlgh 1)1 and slender ch Ix'l are found initially in all dialects, only in Donegal and Connacht are slender dhlgh 1)1 and slender c h Ix'l necessary medially. Yet despite the restricted occurrence of such sounds in actual pronunciation, an underlying broad dhlgh /y/, slender dhlgh 1)1, broad bh /w/ and broad mh /•#/ are required in order to explain the relationship which exists between certain forms. Slender fricatives Here the conversion of a semi-vowel slender ch Ix'l or slender bhlmh fv'l to 1)1 is our main concern; but the further change dhlgh /)/ to /g7 is also discussed. 4.1.1(i) Treatment of slender ch Ix'l and slender dh/gh 1)1. The various developments of slender ch Ix'l and slender dhlgh 1)1 in the major dialects are illustrated in Table .1.In summary it can be said that slender ch Ix'l either must be preserved as in cloiche /klox'a/ (D, Mo) or be changed to /h/ as in cloiche /kloha/ (M) or be changed to /j/ following an unstressed vowel. Conversely, slender dhlgh 1)1 is changed to slender ch Ix'l as in cruaidh fkmisx'/ (Mo).It must be pointed out that, although the convention in Irish is to spell the plural of eadach 'cloth' as eadaighe (or more recently eadai), from a morphological point of view, we are dealing with a plural formed by slendering with the addition of the vowel -e /a/ (see 7.3.2), i.e. eadaiche (-> /eidi:/). [The addition of an underlying /a/ is necessary to allow for the difference between, for instance eadach 'cloth', plural /eidi:/ and bromach 'colt', plural /bruma/ (Cf).] Similarly, although the genitive of bealach 'way' is 67 of use, available at https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms.

Value Engineering Principles of Engineering Economics with Applications, 2018
Value Engineering INTRODUCTION To thrive in today's competitive markets, organizations are looking for smart ways of doing business and work. They cannot afford extensive time delays and increased costs. Value Engineering (VE) is a methodology developed to assist individuals as well as enterprises that will allow them to make changes to augment their processes or services. Several establishments discovered that the methods being followed in the past were insufficient and, therefore, it was essential for them to bring changes to their working style. Using the VE practices, small changes along with hard work and common sense can improve things for organization.https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms.
