Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen Random House Publishing Group;Bantam Classic, Bantam Classic reissue, New York, 2003
Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work "her own darling child" and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print." The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen's radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England. --https://penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/6400/pride-and-prejudice#9780553897395

Pride And Prejudice (paperback Or Softback) Austen, Jane, 1775-1817, author; Thomson, Hugh, 1860-1920, illustrator; Everson, Michael, 1963- editor, writer of foreword Evertype 6/1/2015, "First edition.", Portlaoise, Co. Laois, Ireland, 2015
Pride and Prejudice" is the best known of Jane Austen's six novels, and was first published in 1813. It is highly regarded for the acute description of its characters and because of its ironic style. The novel tells about the relationship which ensues when Elizabeth Bennet meets Mr Darcy. There are many notable characters in the novel, in particular beautiful and affectionate Jane, Elizabeth's older sister; Mrs Bennet, their foolish mother; and their wild and unruly younger sister Lydia. The other memorable actors in the story include gentle and amiable Mr Bingley; Mr Wickam, the plausible scoundrel; William Collins, the ridiculous clergyman; and his appalling patronness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Pride & Prejudice JANE AUSTEN Jane Austen PENGUIN BOOKS AUSTRALIA LTD., printing (1), London, England, 1999
Few readers have disagreed. Yet Elizabeth's vivacity, beauty and wit leave Jane Austen's hero Mr Darcy unmoved on their first meeting, and his aloof superiority is more than matched by Elizabeth's cool disdain. Darcy is peremptorily dismissed — 'the last man in the world I could be prevailed upon to marry' — whereupon, in one of English literature's sublime volte-faces, Elizabeth is compelled to realize that hasty first impressions are not always the truest. Pride and Prejudice is probably Jane Austen's best-loved work and certainly her most popular. In its sparkling comedy of love and marriage, wit, form and feeling achieve a perfect balance.

Pride and Prejudice (Michael O'mara Classics) Austen, Jane Michael O'Mara Books Limited, London, England, England, 2011
Amazon.com Review "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." Next to the exhortation at the beginning of Moby-Dick , "Call me Ishmael," the first sentence of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice must be among the most quoted in literature. And certainly what Melville did for whaling Austen does for marriage--tracing the intricacies (not to mention the economics) of 19th-century British mating rituals with a sure hand and an unblinking eye. As usual, Austen trains her sights on a country village and a few families--in this case, the Bennets, the Philips, and the Lucases. Into their midst comes Mr. Bingley, a single man of good fortune, and his friend, Mr. Darcy, who is even richer. Mrs. Bennet, who married above her station, sees their arrival as an opportunity to marry off at least one of her five daughters. Bingley is complaisant and easily charmed by the eldest Bennet girl, Jane; Darcy, however, is harder to please. Put off by Mrs. Bennet's vulgarity and the untoward behavior of the three younger daughters, he is unable to see the true worth of the older girls, Jane and Elizabeth. His excessive pride offends Lizzy, who is more than willing to believe the worst that other people have to say of him; when George Wickham, a soldier stationed in the village, does indeed have a discreditable tale to tell, his words fall on fertile ground. Having set up the central misunderstanding of the novel, Austen then brings in her cast of fascinating secondary characters: Mr. Collins, the sycophantic clergyman who aspires to Lizzy's hand but settles for her best friend, Charlotte, instead; Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Darcy's insufferably snobbish aunt; and the Gardiners, Jane and Elizabeth's low-born but noble-hearted aunt and uncle. Some of Austen's best comedy comes from mixing and matching these representatives of different classes and economic strata, demonstrating the hypocrisy at the heart of so many social interactions. And though the novel is rife with romantic misunderstandings, rejected proposals, disastrous elopements, and a requisite happy ending for those who deserve one, Austen never gets so carried away with the romance that she loses sight of the hard economic realities of 19th-century matrimonial maneuvering. Good marriages for penniless girls such as the Bennets are hard to come by, and even Lizzy, who comes to sincerely value Mr. Darcy, remarks when asked when she first began to love him: "It has been coming on so gradually, that I hardly know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley." She may be joking, but there's more than a little truth to her sentiment, as well. Jane Austen considered Elizabeth Bennet "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print". Readers of Pride and Prejudice would be hard-pressed to disagree. --Alix Wilber From Library Journal Austen is the hot property of the entertainment world with new feature film versions of Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility on the silver screen and Pride and Prejudice hitting the TV airwaves on PBS.
Pride and Prejudice (Penguin Popular Classics) Austen, Jane London [u.a.] Penguin Books, Penguin popular classics, Penguin/Godfrey Cave ed, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, England, 1994
'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.' The opening of Jane Austen's ever-popular novel sets the tone of her sparkling comedy of manners and morals. There are five daughters in the Bennet family and marriage is the only career open to them. There is naturally much excitement when two young men of good fortune move into the district. But before there can be a happy ending, the hero must conquer his overwhelming pride and Elizabeth, the spirited heroine, her prejudices against him. Only by taking the route to self-knowledge can they reach a mature understanding of each other and find lasting contentment.

이성과감성 = Sense and sensibility Isŏng kwa kamsŏng = Sense and sensibility Aleksandr Isaevich Solzhenit︠s︡yn Alma Classics, Segye munhak chŏnjip, Segye munhak chŏnjip (Minŭmsa (korea)) -- 67., Kaejŏngpa︠n, Sŏul-si, South Korea, 2002
Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human, this leading postwar Japanese writer's second novel, tells the poignant and fascinating story of a young man who is caught between the breakup of the traditions of a northern Japanese aristocratic family and the impact of Western ideas. In consequence, he feels himself "disqualified from being human" (a literal translation of the Japanese title). Donald Keene, who translated this and Dazai's first novel, The Setting Sun, has said of the author's work: "His world . . . suggests Chekhov or possibly postwar France, . . . but there is a Japanese sensibility in the choice and presentation of the material. A Dazai novel is at once immediately intelligible in Western terms and quite unlike any Western book." His writing is in some ways reminiscent of Rimbaud, while he himself has often been called a forerunner of Yukio Mishima.
