12.21 : A Novel Thomason, Dustin Random House Publishing Group, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2012
From the co-author of the two-million copy mega-bestseller The Rule of Four comes a riveting thriller with a brilliant premise based on the 2012 apocalypse phenomenon—perfect for readers of Steve Berry, Preston and Child, and Dan Brown. В For decades, December 21, 2012, has been a touchstone for doomsayers worldwide. It is the date, they claim, when the ancient Maya calendar predicts the world will end. In Los Angeles, two weeks before, all is calm. Dr. Gabriel Stanton takes his usual morning bike ride, drops off the dog with his ex-wife, and heads to the lab where he studies incurable prion diseases for the CDC. His first phone call is from a hospital resident who has an urgent case she thinks he needs to see. Meanwhile, Chel Manu, a Guatemalan American researcher at the Getty Museum, is interrupted by a desperate, unwelcome visitor from the black market antiquities trade who thrusts a duffel bag into her hands. By the end of the day, Stanton, the foremost expert on some of the rarest infections in the world, is grappling with a patient whose every symptom confounds and terrifies him. And Chel, the brightest young star in the field of Maya studies, has possession of an illegal artifact that has miraculously survived the centuries intact: a priceless codex from a lost city of her ancestors. This extraordinary record, written in secret by a royal scribe, seems to hold the answer to her lifeвЂTMs work and to one of historyвЂTMs great riddles: why the Maya kingdoms vanished overnight. Suddenly it seems that our own civilization might suffer this same fate. В With only days remaining until December 21, 2012, Stanton and Chel must join forces before time runs out. Advance praise for *12.21  “Dustin Thomason, M.D., will invariably be compared to Michael Crichton, M.D., andВ 12.21 В will be favorably compared toВ The Andromeda Strain . I truly could not put this book down.”—Nelson DeMille “The most exciting novel of its kind since the days of Michael Crichton, 12.21 takes us from the frontiers of modern neuroscience to the riddles of ancient Maya texts, with nothing less than the future of our civilization at stake.”—Vince Flynn “A fast-moving tale . . . Thomason displays an impressive depth of knowledge of both science and the ancient Mayan way of life. Along the way, he skillfully ramps up the action, one notch at a time. A winning book.”— Kirkus Reviews “Fascinating, terrifying for its potential realism. I loved how tightly everything fit together. I had to keep reading.”—Taylor Stevens, New York Times bestselling author of The Informationist “Fast, suspenseful . . . Lincoln and the war governors / William B. Hesseltine. Hesseltine, William Best, 1902-1963. P. Smith, 1972., Massachusetts, 1972
"The conflict of 1861-5 was a war between the states on the one hand and the growing power of the national government on the other. In popular speech, the Southern Confederacy symbolized the particularist principles of states' rights, and the United States embodied the national creed. But, as in most wars, neither side had a clear monopoly of either contending dogma. Within the confines of the Confederacy, ardent Southern nationalists battled unceasingly with the adherents of state sovereignty, while in the North the struggle between nation and state went on steadily. This latter struggle is the theme of this book. When the smoke of the Civil War had lifted from the battlefields, it was seen that a new nation had been erected on the ruins of the old federal union. But though the fact of national sovereignty was distinct, the process by which Abraham Lincoln, architect of the nation, had used the exigencies of war and politics to build a new structure was not so readily evident. Only by tracing the relations between the federal government and the states during the war years can the foundation of the new nation be made clear"--Page v-vi

No fear : growing up in a risk averse society Tim Gill Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; Distributed by Central Books, London, England, 2007
"No Fear" joins the increasingly vigorous debate about the role and nature of childhood in the UK. Over the past 30 years activities that previous generations of children enjoyed without a second thought have been relabelled as troubling or dangerous, and the adults who permit them branded as irresponsible. "No Fear" argues that childhood is being undermined by the growth of risk aversion and its intrusion into every aspect of children's lives. This restricts children's play, limits their freedom of movement, corrodes their relationships with adults and constrains their exploration of physical, social and virtual worlds.Focusing on the crucial years of childhood between the ages of 5 and 11 - from the start of statutory schooling to the onset of adolescence - "No Fear" examines some of the key issues with regard to children's safety: playground design and legislation, antisocial behaviour, bullying, child protection, the fear of strangers and online risks. It offers insights into the roles of parents, teachers, carers, the media, safety agencies and the Government and exposes the contradictions inherent in current attitudes and policies, revealing how risk-averse behaviour ironically can damage and endanger children's lives. In conclusion, "No Fear" advocates a philosophy of resilience that will help counter risk aversion and strike a better balance between protecting children from genuine threats and giving them rich, challenging opportunities through which to learn and grow.

12.21 : A Novel Thomason, Dustin The Dial Press, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2012
From the co-author of the two-million copy mega-bestseller The Rule of Four comes a riveting thriller with a brilliant premise based on the 2012 apocalypse phenomenon—perfect for readers of Steve Berry, Preston and Child, and Dan Brown. For decades, December 21, 2012, has been a touchstone for doomsayers worldwide. This extraordinary record, written in secret by a royal scribe, seems to hold the answer to her life’s work and to one of history’s great riddles: why the Maya kingdoms vanished overnight. Suddenly it seems that our own civilization might suffer this same fate. With only days remaining until December 21, 2012, Stanton and Chel must join forces before time runs out. Advance praise for 12.21 “Dustin Thomason, M.D., will invariably be compared to Michael Crichton, M.D., and  12.21  will be favorably compared to  The Andromeda Strain . Both authors have written first-rate medical thrillers, the kind of fact-based fiction that is  very  scary but also  very  entertaining. Thomason knows his stuff, and it shows on every page. I had to keep reading.”—Taylor Stevens, New York Times bestselling author of The Informationist “Fast, suspenseful . . . Michael Crichton fans will find a lot to like.”— Publishers Weekly

Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2012
