Kallocain : [a novel Boye, Karin University of Wisconsin Press, Library of world fiction, Madison, Wis, ©1966
This is a novel of the future, profoundly sinister in its vision of a drab terror. Ironic and detached, the author shows us the totalitarian World-state through the eyes of a product of that state, scientist Leo Kall. Kall has invented a drug, kallocain, which denies the privacy of thought and is the final step towards the transmutation of the individual human being into a "happy, healthy cell in the state organism." For, says Leo, "from thoughts and feelings, words and actions are born. How then could these thoughts and feelings belong to the individual? Doesn't the whole fellow-soldier belong to the state? To whom should his thoughts and feelings belong then, if not to the state?" As the first-person record of Leo Kall, scientist, fellow-soldier too late disillusioned to undo his previous actions, Kallocain achieves a chilling power and veracity that place it among the finest novels to emerge from the strife-torn Europe of the twentieth century.

Project terminated : famous military aircraft cancellations of the Cold War and what might have been Erik simonsen Crecy Publishing : [distributor] Crecy Publishing : [distributor] J.B. Wholesalers : [distributor] South Pacific Book Distributors Ltd : [distributor] Specialty Press (MN), crecy publishing, 2012
Throughout aerospace history, production contracts for military aircraft programs have been awarded and then cancelled as political, technological, and operational dictates mandated. Many legendary airplanes like the Northrop YB-49 Flying Wing, the Canadian CF-105 Arrow, and the Mach 3 Lockheed YF-12 Interceptor were actually built and flown successfully before being cancelled. Others, such as the North American F-108 Rapier, never made it past the mock-up stage. This book shows, for the very first time, what might have happened had these cancelled designs, often fraught with corporate politics and industrial intrigue, actually entered production and operational service.

Persian Dreams : Moscow and Tehran Since the Fall of the Shah Parker John W. Parker University of Nebraska Press;Potomac Books, 1st ed, Washington, D.C, ©2009

Moscow’s ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran underwent dramatic fluctuations following Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s triumphant return to Tehran in 1979. After a prolonged implosion, they fitfully expanded, shaped not only by the rush of current events but by centuries of ingrained practices and prejudices. By summer 2006, as Iran forged ahead with its nuclear program and Shia-based forces flexed their muscles across the Middle East, Russian-Iranian relations again appeared to be on the threshold of an entirely new dynamic.

Drawing on firsthand interviews as well as primary and secondary sources, John Parker delineates Moscow’s motives and approaches to dealing with the resurgent Tehran, weaving into the public record the recollections and analyses of Russian politicians, diplomats, and experts who dealt directly with Iran both under the Pahlavi monarchy and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Parker also emphasizes other touchstones of relations between the two countries, including their complex dealings in 1992 immediately after the Soviet Union’s collapse and when they backed opposing sides in the civil war in Tajikistan yet nourished mutual interests on other issues. The depth of his analysis sheds light on the more recent repercussions of the September 11 terrorist attacks for Afghanistan and Iraq, for the Middle East as a whole, and for Iran’s accelerating nuclear program.

Testosterone : From Basic to Clinical Aspects Alexandre Hohl (eds.) Springer International Publishing : Imprint : Springer, 1st ed. 2017, PT, 2017
Research on testosterone is increasing in many senses; however there is still much controversy regarding its physiology and clinical use. This book addresses these topics, providing a broad overview about testosterone, from its basic features to the most recent evidence of clinical applicability. Also, specific conditions in which testosterone play a pivotal role are discussed in detail, such as hypogonadism, misuse and abuse, puberty, cardiovascular effects and testosterone therapy. Although not essential for survival, testosterone represents the essence of male biological function, being the important testicular androgen in men. Low serum testosterone levels are associated with cardiovascular morbidity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and mortality. Conversely, increased serum levels of testosterone may lead to deleterious events. In general, there is increasing evidence that serum testosterone is a major biomarker status of men’s health in general. __Testosterone: From Basic to Clinical Aspects__ is an indispensable reference for all those who seek state-of-the-art knowledge regarding this hormone, from basic issues (including pharmacology and physiology) through clinical aspects (related diseases and supplementation therapy).

nexusstc/The Order of Public Reason: A Theory of Freedom and Morality in a Diverse and Bounded World/ded25058fe25d635550c92fef5449de5.pdf
The order of public reason : a theory of freedom and morality in a diverse and bounded world Gerald F. Gaus Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1, 2010
In This Innovative And Important Work, Gerald Gaus Advances A Revised, And More Realistic, Account Of Public Reason Liberalism, Showing How, In The Midst Of Fundamental Disagreement About Values And Moral Beliefs, We Can Achieve A Moral And Political Order That Treats All As Free And Equal Moral Persons. The First Part Of This Work Analyzes Social Morality As A System Of Authoritative Moral Rules. Drawing On An Earlier Generation Of Moral Philosophers Such As Kurt Baier And Peter Strawson As Well As Current Work In The Social Sciences, Gaus Argues That Our Social Morality Is An Evolved Social Fact, Which Is The Necessary Foundation Of A Mutually Beneficial Social Order. The Second Part Considers How This System Of Social Moral Authority Can Be Justified To All Moral Persons. Drawing On The Tools Of Game Theory, Social Choice Theory, Experimental Psychology, And Evolutionary Theory, Gaus Shows How A Free Society Can Secure A Moral Equilibrium That Is Endorsed By All, And How A Just State Respects, And Develops, Such An Equilibrium--provided By Publisher. Machine Generated Contents Note: 1. The Fundamental Problem; Part I. Social Order And Social Morality: 2. The Failure Of Instrumentalism; 3. Social Morality As The Sphere Of Rules; 4. Methods in Enzymology, Volume 288: Chemokine Receptors (Methods in Enzymology) richard horuk, John N. Abelson, Melvin I. Simon, Richard Horuk Academic Press, Incorporated, 1997, 1997
Chemokines are major mediators of immune cells and are involved in a wide range of proinflammatory human diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and organ transplant rejection. It has recently been discovered that their receptors are involved in HIV infection. The characterization of these molecules and their receptors is thus of primary importance in understanding a number of human diseases and infections. This volume and its companion Volume 287 Chemokines provide comprehensive experimental protocols used in this field of research. Key Features * Chemokine receptors * Chemokines in disease * Signal transduction of chemokines Chemokine Receptors -- Chemokines In Disease -- Signal Transduction Of Chemokines. Edited By Richard Horuk. Includes Bibliographical References And Indexes. The binding of ligand to most seven-transmembrane (STM) G-protein-coupled receptors leads to changes in the coupling of G proteins to the receptor.

The Poetry of Sappho : An Expanded Edition, Featuring Newly Discovered Poems translation and notes by Jim Powell Oxford University Press; Oxford University Press, USA, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2007
Today, thousands of years after her birth, in lands remote from her native island of Lesbos and in languages that did not exist when she wrote her poetry in Aeolic Greek, Sappho remains an important name among lovers of poetry and poets alike,. Celebrated throughout antiquity as the supreme Greek poet of love and of the personal lyric, noted especially for her limpid fusion of formal poise, lucid insight, and incandescent passion, today her poetry is also prized for its uniquely vivid participation in a living paganism. Collected in an edition of nine scrolls by scholars in the second century BC, Sappho's poetry largely disappeared when the Fourth Crusade sacked Constantinople in 1204. All that remained was one poem and a handful of quoted passages . A century ago papyrus fragments recovered in Egypt added a half dozen important texts to Sappho's surviving works. In 2004 a new complete poem was deciphered and published. By far the most significant discovery in a hundred years, it offers a new and tellingly different example of Sappho's poetic art and reveals another side of the poet, thinking about aging and about the transmission of culture from one generation to the next. Jim Powell's translations represent a unique combination of poetic mastery in English verse and a deep schlolarly engagement with Sappho's ancient Greek. They are incomparably faithful to the literal sense of the Greek poems and, simultaneously, to their forms, preserving the original meters and stanzas while exactly replicating the dramatic action of their sequences of disclosure and the passionate momentum of their sentences. Powell's translations have often been anthologized and selected for use in textbooks, winning recognition among discerning readers as by far the best versions in English.

Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West 450-900 (Warfare and History) Guy Halsall London ; New York: Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2003
Guy Halsall relates warfare to many aspects of medieval life, economy, society and politics. This book recovers its distinctiveness, looking at warfare in a rounded context in the British Isles and Western Europe between the end of the Roman Empire and the break-up of the Carolingian Empire.Examining the raising and organization of early medieval armies and looks at the conduct of campaigns, the survey also includes a study of the equipment of warriors and the horrific experience of battle as well as an analysis of medieval fortifications and siege warfare.Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West uses historical and archaeological evidence in a rigorous and sophisticated fashion. It stresses regional variations but also places Anglo-Saxon England in the mainstream of the military developments in this era, and in the process, provides an outstanding resource for students of all levels.

Twenty-first century schools : knowledge, networks and new economies Gerard Macdonald; David W Hursh Sense Publishers, Educational futures, Rotterdam, ©2006
TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY SCHOOLS Knowledge, Networks and New Economies by Gerard Macdonald, Centre for Research in Innovation Management, University of Brighton, UK and David Hursh, Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, University of Rochester, USA Contemporary school systems are not working well. Educational solutions abound, but the problems remain. This is because our school systems are not primarily concerned with education. Their driving forces are political and economic. Any systemic solution to schooling's current difficulties will start with politics; not, in any conventional sense, with education. Twenty-first Century Schools traces the extension of political control over Britain's school system and, through US case studies, looks at alternative methods of organisation. The authors argue that Anglo-American school systems provide a good education for a small minority and, to the majority, offer inadequate schooling. Though this has always been inequitable it may, in the past, have been economically efficient, at least from the viewpoint of the state. If that was once true for mercantile and industrial economies, it is not true now. The knowledge economies toward which the UK and US are moving demand a continuing ability to learn, and to innovate, right across the workforce. Our time-honoured tradition of anachronistic curricula, didactically taught, does not develop these qualities. For those reasons the current Anglo-American drive to entrench unequal educational opportunity is at once economically, politically and socially misconceived. From these premises, Twenty-first Century Schools goes on to outline the political and educational changes needed to shape school systems which are socially and economically adapted to the new century.

Project terminated : famous military aircraft cancellations of the Cold War and what might have been Simonsen, Erik Crecy Publishing : [distributor] Crecy Publishing : [distributor] J.B. Wholesalers : [distributor] South Pacific Book Distributors Ltd : [distributor] Specialty Press (MN), Updated edition, Manchester, 2013

Persian Dreams : Moscow and Tehran Since the Fall of the Shah John W. Parker Washington, D.C.: Potomac Books, University of Nebraska Press, Washington, D.C., 2009

MacArthur's Air Force : American Airpower over the Pacific and the Far East, 1941-51 : American Airpower over the Pacific and the Far East, 1941-51 Yenne, Bill Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, Bloomsbury UK (Trade), Oxford, 2019
General Douglas MacArthur ended World War II controlling one of the most powerful air forces in the world. This new history traces its development from its origins in the Philippines through to its eventual victory in the skies over Japan and its key role in the Korean War. General Douglas MacArthur is one of the towering figures of World War II, and indeed of the twentieth century, but his leadership of the second largest air force in the USAAF is often overlooked. When World War II ended, the three numbered air forces (the Fifth, Thirteenth and Seventh) under his command possessed 4,004 combat aircraft, 433 reconnaissance aircraft, and 922 transports. After being humbled by the Japanese in the Philippines in 1942, MacArthur and his air chief General George Kenney rebuilt the US aerial presence in the Pacific, helping Allied naval and ground forces to push back the Japanese Air Force, re-take the Philippines, and carry the war north towards the Home Islands. Following the end of World War II MacArthur was the highest military and political authority in Japan, and at the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 he was named as Commander in Chief, United Nations Command. In the ten months of his command his Far East Air Forces increased dramatically and saw the first aerial combat between jet fighters. Written by award-winning aviation historian Bill Yenne, this engrossing book traces the journey of American air forces in the Pacific under General MacArthur's command, from their lowly beginnings to their eventual triumph over Imperial Japan, followed by their entry into the jet age in the skies over Korea.
