The Castrato;: A Novel, by Lawrence Louis Goldman John Day Company, Incorporated, New York, New York State, 1973
All the pomp and pageantry of eighteenth century Europe come vibrantly to life in this glittering novel of a brilliant opera star, his triumphant career, and his tempestuous personal life. Set against the dazzling courts of Madrid and Vienna, the glamorous opera houses of London, Paris, and Rome, THE CASTRATO is the story of Carlo Broschi, detto Farinelli, who actually was the most celebrated musical figure of his time. A male soprano with a bell-like voice which captivated men and woman like, Farinelli began life as a simple Italian peasant. The cruel mutilation which enabled him to sing in the choir of a Benedictine monastery preserved a voice of rare beauty--a gift which would carry him from an obscure Italian conservatory to the heights of European society. Here Farinelli would meet all the greats of the eighteenth century, from Pitt, Burke, and Chesterfield to Handel and Scarlatti. And here, despite his official status as a castrato, he would conquer the most beautiful women of his time. Alive with court intrigues, clandestine romances, and the horrors of the eighteenth century Spanish Inquisition, THE CASTRATO is a powerful example of historical fiction at its very best.

The Bern Book: A Record of a Voyage of the Mind by Vincent O. Carter John Day Company, Incorporated, New York, New York State, 1973
From the Preface: "...I was won over to Vincent Carter by his first and very curious work which he called 'The Bern Book'. It is not quite autobiography, not quite a travel book, but it might be called a profession of faith (in himself) or an essay on being an unpublished black writer in Bern (Switzerland) during the early postwar era. In it and through it I grew to know Carter, who tries to explain to us, to the Bernese, and perhaps to himself, what he is doing in that town...."

The Big Wave: A Novel Buck, Pearl S. HarperCollins Publishers, 2012
Overview: Pearl Sydenstricker Buck (1892–1973) was a bestselling and Nobel Prize–winning author. Her classic novel The Good Earth (1931) was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and William Dean Howells Medal. Born in Hillsboro, West Virginia, Buck was the daughter of missionaries and spent much of the first half of her life in China, where many of her books are set. In 1934, civil unrest in China forced Buck back to the United States. Throughout her life she worked in support of civil and women’s rights, and established Welcome House, the first international, interracial adoption agency. In addition to her highly acclaimed novels, Buck wrote two memoirs and biographies of both of her parents. For her body of work, Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938, the first American woman to have done so. She died in Vermont.

Anna and the King of Siam Margaret Landon; Margaret Ayer The John Day Company, 1st HarperPerennial Ed edition, December 1, 1999

Anna Leonowens, a proper Englishwoman, was an unlikley candidate to change the course of Siamese (Thai) history. A young widow and mother, her services were engaged in the 1860's by King Mongkut of Siam to help him communicate with foreign governments and be the tutor to his children and favored concubines. Stepping off the steamer from London, Anna found herself in an exotic land she could have only dreamed of lush landscape of mystic faiths and curious people, and king's palace bustling with royal pageantry, ancient custom, and harems. One of her pupils, the young prince Chulalongkorn, was particularly influenced by Leonowens and her Western ideals. He learned about Abraham Lincoln and the tenets of democracy from her, and years later he would become Siam's most progressive king. He guided the country's transformation from a feudal state to a modern society, abolshing slavery and making many other radical reforms.

Weaving meticulously researched facts with beautifully imagined scenes, Margret Landon recreates an unforgettable portrait of life in a forgotten extotic land. Written more than fifty years ago, and translated into dozens of languages, Anna and the King of Siam (the inspiration for the magical play and film The King and I)continues to delight and enchant readers around the world.
