Steampunk: Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol (Steampunk Classics)
Charles Dickens;Zdenko Basic (illus)
Running Press Adult, Steampunk Classics, 2014
Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol tells the time-honored tale of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, whose encounters with the ghosts of Jacob Marley, Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come lead him to examine his bitter existence. Haunting steampunk illustrations by acclaimed artist Zdenko Basic accompany the original story, transforming this Christmas classic like never before. Images of steam-powered machinery, a chilling industrial London, and ornate mechanical gears come together as Scrooge travels through his life on Christmas Eve night. Additionally, Charles Dickens' celebrated short stores, "The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton" and "A Christmas Tree" are included and paired with equally enchanting steampunk illustrations. Those of us who cherish each holiday with Dickens in our hearts -- the man who has linked the Christmas spirit with love, forgiveness, and charity -- will treasure this rare collector's edition for this Christmas and many to come.

Charles Dickens' A Christmas carol
Charles Dickens, Arthur Rackham (illustrator)
Dover Publications, Incorporated, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2012
Rich in the imagery of nineteenth-century England, this literary classic celebrates a return to old-fashioned Christmas festivities while examining the crisis in one man's personal life. One of the most famous characters in literary history, Ebenezer Scrooge is the "grasping old sinner" who finds redemption after witnessing scenes from his life in which his greed, self-interest, and lack of compassion are revealed. Complementing the master storyteller's wise and witty prose are the timeless illustrations of Arthur Rackham, whose evocative artwork finds humor in Scrooge's miserly ways, depicting him as a cranky humbug who eventually relents and joins the merrymaking. Continuously in print since it was first published in 1843, Dickens's immortal tale is still relevant today, sending a message that cuts through the materialistic trappings of the holiday season and gets to its heart and soul. This illustrated edition stands as one of the most beautiful available.

Around the World in Eighty Days
Jules Verne, Michael Robert Bradie
Penguin Books Ltd, 1872
Phileas Fogg is a wealthy English gentleman living a solitary life in London. Despite his wealth, Fogg lives modestly and carries out his habits with mathematical precision. Very little can be said about his social life other than that he is a member of the Reform Club, where he spends the best part of his days. Having dismissed his valet for bringing him shaving water at a temperature slightly lower than expected, Fogg hires Frenchman Jean Passepartout as a replacement. On the evening of 2 October 1872, while at the Reform Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for £20,000, half of his fortune, from his fellow club members to complete such a journey within this period. With Passepartout accompanying him, Fogg departs from London by train at 8:45 p.m. that evening; to win the wager, he must return to the club by this same time on 21 December, 80 days later. They take the remaining £20,000 of Fogg's fortune with them to cover expenses during the journey.

Around the World in Eighty Days (Dover Children's Evergreen Classics)
Verne, Jules
Dover Publications, Incorporated, INscribe Digital, Mineola, 2017
Victorian gentleman Phileas Fogg wagers half his fortune on the astounding proposition that he can travel all the way around the world in just 80 days. So begins this classic 1873 tale of adventure, entertainment, and suspense, as Fogg and his French valet, Passepartout, circle the globe by train and ship. To add to the drama, a Scotland Yard detective, convinced that Fogg is a criminal evading justice, has vowed to stop them in their tracks. Jules Verne's novel colorfully recaptures the spirit of its time, when readers were fascinated by new technologies and eager to discover faraway places. This travelogue sweeps through many exotic settings, including the jungles of India, where Fogg and Passepartout rescue a rajah's widow, and across the Pacific to the American frontier, where they brave a bison stampede and an attack by Sioux Indians. Generations have thrilled to this action-packed story, which continues to capture the imagination of young readers.

Around the World in 80 Days
Jules Verne; Frederick Paul Walter
Excelsior Editions/State University of New York Press, State University of New York Press, Albany, 2013
Evocative of an era when all travel was an adventure, this timeless classic is perfectly captured by Ingpen's rich and detailed illustrations. Although we live in an age when round-the-world travel is possible in hours rather than weeks, Verne's tale of a race against the clock has never lost its power to thrill. Illustrations.

an Eccentric Englishman Accepts A Challenge To Circle The Globe With Unprecedented Speed. Exotic Locales, Seemingly Insurmountable Obstacles, And Comic Relief Provide A Fantastic Blend Of Adventure, Entertainment, And Suspense.

school Library Journal

gr 3-5 - All Three Adaptations Of These Classic Novels Fall Prey To The Usual Pitfalls Involved In Such A Process. The Bare Outlines Of The Plots Are Provided, But Character Development, A True Sense Of Place And Time With Regard To Setting, And Masterful Description Of The Action All Go By The Wayside. jungle Bookis Mistitled As It References Only The Mowgli Stories And Moves From Incident To Incident So Quickly That The Law Of The Jungle Morals In Kipling's Anthropomorphic Fables Are Lost. treasure Islandis Written In A Similar Breakneck, Choppy Style, And Long John Silver, One Of The Most Memorable Characters Ever Created, Is Eminently Forgettable In This Telling. In 80 Days, The Historic Events That Made Such A Journey Even Thinkable, Like The Opening Of The Suez Canal And The Completion Of The Transcontinental Railroad, Are Never Mentioned, Nor Is The International Date Line, Which Enabled Fogg To Win His Wager, Mentioned, Let Alone Explained. The Cartoon Illustrations In All Three Volumes Border On Offensive As No Matter Which Country Or Culture Is Depicted, The Dot-eyed Faces Are Virtually Identical Except For Minor Variations In Skin Tone. Some Illustrations Make No Sense, As When The Action In 80 Daysdescribes The Servant Passepartout At The Bottom Of A Circus Pyramid, But The Picture Is Of A Japanese Tearoom.-grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, Nj
copyright 2007 Reed Business Information

Around the World in Eighty Days
Jules Verne
New York: Aladdin Paperbacks, Simon & Schuster, [N.p.], 2012
A wealthy man and his valet race against time to circumnavigate the world in eighty days in one of Jules Verne's best known tales—now with an arresting new look!Phileas Fogg has always been a quiet, orderly, and predictable English gentleman who reads the newspaper, visits the Reform Club, and dines at exactly the same time each day. But this routine is abandoned when he wagers his fortune in an outlandish bet that he can travel around the entire world in eighty days. Fogg sets off immediately to prove his point, accompanied by his new valet, Passepartout, whose job is turning out to be quite different from the tranquil position he expected. As the pair travels by boat, train, carriage, and elephant from one country to the next, Fogg's meticulous planning maps out their route. But not even he can anticipate every delay and danger along the way. And unbeknownst to him, the trip is being shadowed by Detective Fix, who is convinced Fogg is a bank robber running from justice. With the clock counting down, the only thing that's certain is that this trip will end in either glory or ruin.

The Extraordinary Journeys: Around the World in Eighty Days (Oxford World's Classics)
Jules Verne; William Butcher
New York : Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 1999
Around the World in Eighty Days has been a bestseller for over a century, but it has never before appeared in a critical edition. While most translations misread or even abridge the original, this stylish version is completely true to Verne's classic, moving as fast and as brilliantly as Phineas Fogg's own race against time. Around the World in Eighty Days offers a strong dose of post-romantic reality but not a shred of science fiction: its modernism lies instead in the experimental technique and Verne's unique twisting of space and time.

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition)
Mark Twain; Steven Frye
Race Point Publishing, Quarto Publishing Group, New York, New York, 2015
Revel in Huck Finn's adventure on the Mississippi River in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , the American masterpiece by Mark Twain. "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called 'Huckleberry Finn'." - Ernest Hemingway A favorite among young readers and adults alike, Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , first published in 1884, is considered to be the author's masterpiece, as well as one of the best American novels ever written. In order to escape his abusive father, Huckleberry Finn fakes his own death. He meets up with the runaway slave Jim, and the two begin a new, carefree life on a raft traversing the Mississippi River. Despite their travels bringing them more trouble than expected and the fear of being returned to their old lives, Huck Finn and Jim form a bond that helps protect them from the judgments of a hypocritical society that claims to value civilization even as it benefits from the horror of slavery. Many readers see Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a children's book because Huck is a boy. However, the book's moral themes and metaphors are relevant for almost any age and situation. Huck rejects his Aunt Sally's attempts to protect him in favor of the entering the unknown wild. He simply values his own personal freedom and sense above all else - a quintessential American trait. Complete and unabridged, this elegantly designed, clothbound edition features an elastic closure and a new introduction by Steven Frye. The Knickerbocker Classics bring together the essential works of classic authors from around the world in stunning editions to be collected and enjoyed.
