Corpus Inscriptionum Arabicarum Palaestinae, Volume Five: -H-I-
Moshe Sharon
Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2013
Western Palestine is extremely rich in Arabic inscriptions, whose dates range from as early as CE 150 until modern times. Most of the inscriptions date from the Islamic period, for under Islam the country gained particular religious and strategic importance, even though it made up only part of the larger province of Syria. This historical importance is clearly reflected in the hundreds of inscriptions, the texts of which cover a variety of topics: construction, dedication, religious endowments, epitaphs, Qur'anic texts, prayers and invocations, all now assembled in the Corpus Inscriptionum Arabicarum Palaestinae (CIAP). The CIAP follows the method established at the end of the 19th century by Max van Berchem, namely, the studying of the Arabic inscriptions 'in context'. Van Berchem managed to publish two volumes of the inscriptions from Jerusalem: the CIAP covers the entire country. The inscriptions are arranged according to site, and are studied in their respective topographical, historical and cultural context. In this way the CIAP offers more than a survey of inscriptions: it represents the epigraphical angle of the geographical history of the Holy Land. Volume One: (A) was published in 1997, Volume Two: (B-C) in 1999, Volume Three: (D-F) in 2004, Volume Four: (G) in 2008, an Addendum in 2007, Volume Five: (H-I) in 2013, Volume Six: J (1) in 2016 and Volume Seven: J (2) Jerusalem 1 in 2021. All volumes are still available.

nexusstc/Due Diligence in International Law/b9ab5feeea197439877b366548f71b61.pdf
Due Diligence in International Law
Joanna Kulesza
Brill | Nijhoff, Queen Mary Studies in International Law Series, 1, 2016
Due Diligence in International Law identifies due diligence as the missing link between state responsibility and international liability. Acknowledged in all legal fields, it ensures international peaceful cooperation and prevents significant transboundary harm, yet it has thus far not been comprehensively discussed in literature. The present volume fills this void. Kulesza identifies due diligence as a principle of international law and traces its evolution throughout centuries. The no-harm principle, key to identifying responsibility for transboundary harm, focal to international environmental law and applicable to e.g. combating terrorism, follows states' obligation of due diligence in preventing foreign harm. This obligation, present in various treaty-based and customary regimes is argued to be a principle of international public law applicable to all obligations of conduct.

Cajetan's Biblical Commentaries : Motive and Method
Michael O'Connor
Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2017
Remembered as the official who failed to keep Luther in the Catholic fold, Tommaso de Vio, Cardinal Cajetan (1469-1534) was a multi-faceted figure whose significance extends beyond those days in Augsburg. In the 1520s, he embarked on a labour of biblical commentary that occupied the final decade of his life, producing over a million words of translation and commentary. Offering an overview of this remarkable body of work, Michael O'Connor argues that Cajetan's motive was the renewal of Christian living (more 'Catholic Reform' than 'Counter-Reformation'), and that his method was a bold and fresh hybrid of scholasticism and Renaissance humanism, correcting the Vulgate's errors and expounding the text almost exclusively according to the literal sense. -- Back cover

Companion to Music in the Age of the Catholic Monarchs
Tessa Knighton (ed.)
Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill's companions to the musical culture of medieval and early modern Europe, volume 1, Boston, 2016
The __Companion to Music in the Age of the Catholic Monarchs__, edited by Tess Knighton, offers a major new study that deepens and enriches our understanding of the forms and functions of music that flourished in late medieval Spanish society. The fifteen essays, written by leading authorities in the field, present a synthesis based on recently discovered material that throws new light on different aspects of musical life during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabel (1474-1516): sacred and secular music-making in royal and aristocratic circles; the cathedral music environment; liturgy and power; musical connections with Rome, Portugal and the New World; theoretical and unwritten musical practices; women as patrons and performers; and the legacy of Jewish musical tradition. Contributors are Mercedes Castillo Ferreira, Giuseppe Fiorentino, Roberta Freund Schwartz, Eleazar Gutwirth, Tess Knighton, Kenneth Kreitner, Javier Marin Lopez, Ascension Mazuela-Anguita, Bernadette Nelson, Pilar Ramos Lopez, Emilio Ros-Fabregas, Juan Ruiz Jimenez, Richard Sherr, Ronald Surtz, and Jane Whetnall."

Digital Classical Philology : Ancient Greek and Latin in the Digital Revolution
Berti, Monica(Editor)
K.G. Saur Verlag;De Gruyter, Age of access? - Grundfragen der Informationsgesellschaft, volume 10, 1. Auflage, Berlin, 2019
Thanks to the digital revolution also a traditional discipline like philology has been enjoying a renaissance within academia and beyond. Decades of work have been producing important results that are developing new research questions and educational resources. This volume describes the state of the art of digital philology with a focus on ancient Greek and Latin, the Classical languages of Western culture. Contributions address problems like accessibility of information about Greek and Latin sources, data entry, collection and analysis of Classical texts. The book describes the fundamental role of libraries in building digital catalogs and developing machine-readable citation systems of Greek and Latin works. A section is devoted to methods and standards for producing digital critical editions of Classical texts and critical annotations about them. The final part is about morpho-syntactic annotation and lexical resources of Greek and Latin with a discussion of topics that pertain to philology and linguistics. The aim of the volume is to describe an emergent field for a new generation of scholars and students, explaining what is reachable and analyzable that was not before in terms of technology and accessibility.

Caliphate and Kingship in a Fifteenth-Century Literary History of Muslim Leadership and Pilgrimage: __al-Ḏahab al-masbūk fī ḏikr man ḥaǧǧa min al-ḫulafāʾ wa-l-mulūk__. Critical Edition, Annotated Translation, and Study
Jo van Steenbergen
Brill Academic Pub, Bibliotheca Maqriziana, v. 4, Leiden ; Boston, 2016
In Caliphate and Kingship in a Fifteenth-Century Literary History of Muslim Leadership and Pilgrimage Jo van Steenbergen presents a new study, edition and translation of al-Ḏahab al-Masbūk fī Ḏikr man Ḥağğa min al-Ḫulafāʾ wa-l-Mulūk, a summary history of the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca by al-Maqrīzī (766-845 AH/ca. 1365-1442 CE). Traditionally considered as a useful source for the history of the ḥağğ, al-Ḏahab al-Masbūk is re-interpreted here as a complex literary construction that was endowed with different meanings. Through detailed contextualist, narratological, semiotic and codicological analyses Van Steenbergen demonstrates how these meanings were deeply embedded in early-fifteenth century Egyptian transformations, how they changed substantially over time, and how they included particular claims about authorship and about legitimate and good Muslim rule.

The Dura Language : Grammar and Phylogeny
Nicolas Schorer, 1987-
Brill's Tibetan Studies Librar, Brill's Tibetan Studies Library / Languages of the Greater H, 17, Lam, 2016
In The Dura Language: Grammar andamp; Phylogeny Nicolas Schorer provides the definite descriptive account of this hitherto poorly documented language of Lamjung, Nepal. The Dura language is effectively extinct, although attempts at revival may be undertaken by well-intentioned members of Dura ethnicity. On the basis of a comprehensive study and analysis of all of the extant Dura language material, the book outlines the phonology, nominal and verbal morphology, lexical and syntactic properties as well as the phylogenetic position of the language in unprecedented detail. The result of the phylogenetic inquiry will help explain some of the sociocultural realities associated with the Dura community in Nepal and is a significant contribution to our understanding of the linguistic landscape of the Himalayas

BRILL; Alexandru Madgearu, East Central and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages, 450 - 1450, volume 41, Leiden, 2017
Scope and content: "In The Asanids : the Political and Military History of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1280), Alexandru Madgearu offers the first comprehensive history in English of a state which played a major role in the evolution of the Balkan region during Middle Ages. This state emerged from the rebellion of two peoples, Romanians and Bulgarians, against Byzantine domination, within a few decades growing to a regional power that entered into conflict with Byzantium and with the Latin Empire of Constantinople. The founders were members of a Romanian (Vlach) family, whose intention was to revive the former Bulgarian state, the only legitimate political framework that could replace the Byzantine rule" - Provided by publisher

Dialect Atlas of North Yemen and Adjacent Areas (Handbook of Oriental Studies: Section 1; The Near and Middle East)
Peter Behnstedt, Gwendolin Goldbloom
Brill Academic Pub, Handbook of Oriental Studies Section 1: the Near and Middle East, 114, Tra, 2016
Since the author's publication of __Die nordjemenitischen Dialekte. Teil 1: Atlas__ in 1985, a lot of new field work has been done in North Yemen and adjacent areas with new data especially from the extreme north of Yemen and neighbouring areas in Saudi Arabia. These are considered to be the most archaic Arabic dialect areas. The publication of a new atlas of the region in English therefore suggested itself. The atlas consists of 192 fully coloured maps with 30 phonetical and phonological maps, 100 morphological and 60 lexical ones. Depending on the subject the maps are accompanied by shorter or longer commentaries and paradigms. The book is of interest to Arabists, Semitists and dialectologists.

A Discourse and Register Analysis of the Prophetic Book of Joel (Studia Semitica Neerlandica, 66)
Colin M. Toffelmire
Brill Academic Publishers, Studia Semitica Neerlandica, volume 66, Leiden, 2016
In A Discourse and Register Analysis of the Prophetic Book of Joel , Colin M. Toffelmire presents a thorough analysis of the text of Joel from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics. While traditional explorations of Joel generally engage the book from an historical or literary perspective, here Toffelmire examines syntactic and semantic patterning in the book, and builds from there toward a description of the linguistic register and context of situation that these linguistic patterns suggest. This work also showcases the usefulness of discourse analysis grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics for the analysis of ancient texts.

Corpus Inscriptionum Arabicarum Palaestinae, Volume Six: -J (1)- (Handbook of Oriental Studies: Section 1; The Near and Middle East) (English and Arabic Edition)
Moshe Sharon
Koninklijke Brill N.V., Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 1 the near and Middle East Series, 1, 2016

Dostoevsky’s Legal and Moral Philosophy : The Trial of Dmitri Karamazov
Raymond Angelo Belliotti
Brill Rodopi, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2016
This work closely examines the trial of Dmitri Karamazov as the springboard to explaining and critically assessing Dostoevsky's legal and moral philosophy. The author connects Dostoevsky's objections to Russia's acceptance of western juridical notions such as the rule of law and an adversary system of adjudication with his views on fundamental human nature, the principle of universal responsibility, and his invocation of unconditional love. Central to Dostoevsky's vision is his understanding of the relationship between the dual human yearnings for individualism and community. In the process, the author related Dostoevsky's conclusions to the thought of Plato, Augustine, Anselm, Dante, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Sartre. Throughout the work, the author compares, contrasts, and evaluates Dostoevsky's analyses with contemporary discussions of the rule of law, the adversary system, and the relationship between individualism and communitarianism.

Contested Spaces, Common Ground : Space and Power Structures in Contemporary Multireligious Societies
Ulrich Winkler; Lidia Rodríguez Fernández; Oddbjørn Leirvik
Brill/Rodopi, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2017
Spaces are produced and shaped by discourses and, in turn, produce and shape discourses themselves. ‘Space'is becoming a significant and complex concept for the encounter between people, cultures, religions, ideologies, politics, between histories and memories, the advantaged and the disadvantaged, the powerful and the weak. As a result, it provides a rich hermeneutical and methodological inventory for mapping interculturality and interreligiosity. This volume looks at space as a critical theory and epistemological tool within cultural studies that fosters the analysis of power structures and the deconstruction of representations of identities within our societies that are shaped by power.

Offering an overview of this remarkable body of work, Michael O'Connor argues that Cajetan's motive was the renewal of Christian living (more ‘Catholic Reform'than ‘Counter-Reformation'), and that his method was a bold and fresh hybrid of scholasticism and Renaissance humanism, correcting the Vulgate's errors and expounding the text almost exclusively according to the literal sense.

Due Diligence in International Law
Joanna Kulesza
Brill | Nijhoff, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2016
Due Diligence in International Law identifies due diligence as the missing link between state responsibility and international liability. Acknowledged in all legal fields, it ensures international peaceful cooperation and prevents significant transboundary harm, yet it has thus far not been comprehensively discussed in literature. The present volume fills this void. Kulesza identifies due diligence as a principle of international law and traces its evolution throughout centuries. The no-harm principle, key to identifying responsibility for transboundary harm, focal to international environmental law and applicable to e.g. combating terrorism, follows states'obligation of due diligence in preventing foreign harm. This obligation, present in various treaty-based and customary regimes is argued to be a principle of international public law applicable to all obligations of conduct.

Ancient Worlds in Digital Culture
Claire Clivaz; Paul Dilley; David Hamidović
Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2016
The volume presents a selection of research projects in Digital Humanities applied to the “Biblical Studies” in the widest sense and context, including Early Jewish and Christian studies, hence the title “Ancient Worlds”. Taken as a whole, the volume explores the emergent Digital Culture at the beginning of the 21st century. It also offers many examples which attest to a change of paradigm in the textual scholarship of “Ancient Worlds”: categories are reshaped; textuality is (re-) investigated according to its relationships with orality and visualization; methods, approaches and practices are no longer a fixed conglomeration but are mobilized according to their contexts and newly available digital tools.

Manuel Sartori; Manuela E. B Giolfo; Philippe Cassuto; Pierre Larcher
Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2016
This volume includes the reflections of leading researchers on Arabic and Semitic languages, also understood as systems and representations. The work first deals with Biblical Hebrew, Early Aramaic, Afroasiatic and Semitic. Its core focuses on morpho-syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, rhetoric and logic matters, showing Arabic grammar's place within the system of the sciences of language. In the second part, authors deal with lexical issues, before they explore dialectology. The last stop is a reflection on how Arabic linguistics may prevent the understanding of the Arabs'own grammatical theory and the teaching and learning of Arabic.

Anthropologische Differenz Und Animalische Konvenienz : Tierphilosophie Bei Thomas Von Aquin
Tobias Davids
Koninklijke Brill N.V., Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2017
This study examines Thomas Aquinas's contribution to the systematic field of animal philosophy. It applies various models from the current philosophical debate (especially from that concerning the mind of animals) as interpretative aids to tap the potential of the Thomistic approach. Thomas draws a clear line of demarcation between animals and human beings (= anthropological difference). However, he also considers it important to work out the similarities between humans and animals, insofar as they are both so-called animalia , id est, living beings possessing senses (= animal conformance). His philosophical deliberations concerning animals have a methodological function as well, namely to highlight the distinct capacities of human beings. Thus, for Thomas, the reflection on animals is a key instrument in dealing with anthropological questions
