A Sunlit Absence : Silence, Awareness, and Contemplation by Martin Laird Oxford University Press; Oxford University Press, USA, Oxford University Press USA, New York, 2011
'The practice of contemplation is one of the great spiritual arts,'writes Martin Laird in A Sunlit Absence.'Not a technique but a skill, it harnesses the winds of grace that lead us out into the liberating sea of silence.'In this companion volume to his bestselling Into the Silent Land, Laird focuses on a quality often overlooked by books on Christian meditation: a vast and flowing spaciousness that embraces both silence and sound, and transcends all subject/object dualisms. Drawing on the wisdom of great contemplatives from St. Augustine and St. Teresa of Avila to St. Hesychios, Simone Weil, and many others, Laird shows how we can uncover the deeper levels of awareness that rest within us like buried treasure waiting to be found. The key insight of the book is that as our practice matures, so will our experience of life's ordeals, sorrows, and joys expand into generous, receptive maturity. We learn to see whatever difficulties we experience in meditation--boredom, lethargy, arrogance, depression, grief, anxiety--not as obstacles to be overcome but as opportunities to practice surrender to what is. With clarity and grace Laird shows how we can move away from identifying with our turbulent, ever-changing thoughts and emotions to the cultivation of a'sunlit absence'--the luminous awareness in which God's presence can most profoundly be felt. Addressed to both beginners and intermediates on the pathless path of still prayer, A Sunlit Absence offers wise guidance on the specifics of contemplative practice as well as an inspiring vision of the purpose of such practice and the central role it can play in our spiritual lives.

Computational Complexity : A Conceptual Perspective Oded Goldreich Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), 1 edition, May 31, 2008
Complexity theory is a central field of the theoretical foundations of computer science. It is concerned with the general study of the intrinsic complexity of computational tasks; that is, it addresses the question of what can be achieved within limited time (and/or with other limited natural computational resources). This book offers a conceptual perspective on complexity theory. It is intended to serve as an introduction for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, either as a textbook or for self-study. The book will also be useful to experts, since it provides expositions of the various sub-areas of complexity theory such as hardness amplification, pseudorandomness and probabilistic proof systems. In each case, the author starts by posing the intuitive questions that are addressed by the sub-area and then discusses the choices made in the actual formulation of these questions, the approaches that lead to the answers, and the ideas that are embedded in these answers.

Divorce, Families and Emotion Work: 'Only Death Will Make Us Part' (Palgrave Macmillan Studies in Family and Intimate Life) Elena Moore (auth.) Palgrave Macmillan UK Macmillan, Palgrave Macmillan Studies in Family and Intimate Life, 1, 2016
“This book is a carefully researched, clearly written, very important contribution to our understanding of divorce.” —Arlie Hochschild, University of California, USA “This rich, evidence-informed narrative provides a frank, ‘up close and personal’ portrait of the aftermath of marriage dissolution.” — Mary Corcoran, Maynooth University, Ireland “Moore throws a welcome light on the moral identities and gendered inequalities of parenting after separation.” — Rosalind Edwards, University of Southampton, UK This book focuses on parental commitment to family life after divorce, in contrast to its common perception as an irrevocable breaking up of the family unit, which is often perpetuated by representations from popular culture and the media. In the first detailed review of emotions and emotion work undertaken by divorced parents, the author sheds light on how parents manage feelings of guilt, fear, on-going anger and everyday unhappiness in the course of family life post-divorce. Moore demonstrates how the emotional dimension of divorce is shaped by societal and structural factors and requires parents to undertake considerable emotion work in the creation of new moral identities. The book points to the often gendered responsibilities for sustaining family lives post separation, and how these reflect extensive inequalities in family practices.  The author concludes that divorce is not dangerous for society; it is not a social evil or a demonstration of the rise of selfish individualism, and that divorcees remain committed to former partners and children long after divorce.  This book will be of interest to scholars and students in the areas of Sociology, Psychology, Family Studies, Social Policy, Social Work and Law.

Blood Noir (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 16): An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel Hamilton, Laurell K. Berkley (A Registered Trademark of Penguin Group-USA), Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter 16, 2008
A favor for a friend puts Anita Blake in the center of a full-blown scandal that threatens master vampire Jean- Claude's reign-and makes her a pawn in an ancient vampire queen's new rise to power. From Publishers Weekly The florid 16th Anita Blake novel (after 2007's The Harlequin ) updates Anita's endlessly erotic adventures as a living vampire with many weird lovers. Anita serves her vampire sweetie Jean-Claude, Master of the City of St. Louis, obsessed with feeding him and her own need to leech off of others' sexual pleasure or ardeur while retaining her rep as vampire executioner (despite the seeming conflict of interest), U.S. marshal and necromancer. She's also accompanying her bed-buddy Jason Schuyler to visit his dying estranged father in North Carolina. After arriving, Jason's mistaken for his rich cousin Keith Summerland, who's ditched his bride-to-be to run off with the wife of a vampire Master, giving Anita a case to solve between wild orgies with wereanimals. Hamilton chronicles Anita's escapades with a growing air of ennui, which longtime readers can't help sharing as sex increasingly takes the place of plot and character development. Divorce, Families and Emotion Work: 'Only Death Will Make Us Part' (Palgrave Macmillan Studies in Family and Intimate Life) Elena Moore Palgrave Macmillan UK Macmillan, Springer Nature, London, 2016

The Arrow and the Lyre : A Study of the Role of Love in the Works of Thomas Mann Frank Donald Hirschbach (auth.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint : Springer, International Scholars Forum 1, 1, 1955
When I first thought about this topic I encountered many ex pressions of surprise among my better-read friends, and a number of them asked me: "Is there really much love in Thomas Mann's works, and is it really important?" The posing of this question is the direct result of three decades of criticism which has represented Mann mainly as a serious and sober novelist, and frequently also as a prosy and prolix author who "clutters up" his works with superfluous bits of erudition. HisMagicMountain bids fair to join the list of immortal works of world literature which people bring back from their summer vacations - unread. Mann is, of course, serious and sober and very North German in most of his works, and the charge of occasional verbosity and divagation can well be substantiated. Nevertheless, Mann has, in my opinion, tried to be fundamentally a humorist throughout his life and career, not in the conventional sense of the word in which Fritz Reuter, P. G. Wodehouse or Ring Lardner qualify, but as a man who at an astonishingly early age saw through his fellow humans, analyzed and defined their basic confiicts and decided to be a mediator, a prophet of the realm of the middle. The humor in Mann's works derives from his manner of looking at the human comedy, and our amusement is in direct proportion to our ability to discern a comic element in life, even in tragedy.
