The intentional family : how to build family ties in our modern world Doherty, William J. (William Joseph), 1945- Reading, Mass.: Addison-Wesley Publishing, Reading, Mass, Massachusetts, 1997
Drawing upon his successful practice and research, William Doherty shows us how to fight entropy at home and in our communities. He offers a practical guide that will help all families to keep open channels of communication, sustain regular involvement with others, and manage conflict. Real-life case studies combined with Doherty's personal experience of family life are used throughout the book to illustrate the best ways to approach daily routines as well as special events like holidays. By carefully cultivating the rituals of connection that bring us together - from family dinners to vacations, from volunteer work to attending religious services, from weekly drives with a teenager to monthly dinners alone with a spouse - every family can become what Doherty calls an Intentional Family.

lgli/Jim Grimsley - Dream Boy (1995, Touchstone).mobi
Dream Boy: A Novel Jim Grimsley Touchstone, 1995
In a novel as stunning and heartbreaking as his acclaimed debut work, Grimsley recounts the story of a painful first love--between two adolescent boys who bravely sustain each other in a world of domestic disintegration. From Publishers WeeklyWith this heartbreaking story of first love, Grimsley, recipient of the 1995 Sue Kaufman Prize for his first novel, Winter Birds, has crafted another potential award winner. Here he works that novel's theme?a father's abuse of his son?into his sensitive depiction of a love affair between two high-school boys in the rural South. Nathan, a sophomore and the only child of an abusive, scripture-quoting, booze-guzzling father and a nearly invisible mother, becomes smitten with Roy, a senior who lives next door. Almost without realizing it (and with some reluctance on both sides), they begin an achingly tender romance. Ultimately, peer pressure leads to tragedy, and to a sort of metaphysical denouement that may strike some readers as over-the-top. But by that time, Grimsley's scenario has become so poignant and credible that the ending seems almost inevitable. He clearly understands the pain and confusion of budding love, and his present-tense narrative adds urgency and a touching immediacy to his tale. Without ever succumbing to cliche, Grimsley cuts with surgical precision to the heart of these characters' inchoate longings and barely repressed fears. Deceptively simple descriptive passages are hauntingly elegiac, and things left unsaid become as important as words expressed: these players' silences speak volumes. Romantic passion, violence and ultimate liberation coalesce in this singular display of literary craftsmanship. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library JournalFor collections desirous of a "problem" coming-of-age story with a gay theme, this might be a good bet. Grimsley, a Pen/Hemingway finalist for Winter Birds (LJ 8/94), writes smoothly, his Southern settings are evocative, and the dysfunctional family (with an abusive, alcoholic, Bible-toting father) of young Nathan rings true, as does the violence that pervades Dream Boy. Psychologically, what draws Nathan to Roy, the older-boy-baseball-star-with-a-girlfriend, makes sense; but, sexual orientation aside, Roy's interest in Nathan makes much less sense?as if it's supposed to be magic or chemistry. Whatever it is, the treatment is too perfunctory. Similarly, settings can tend toward the formulaic (farm pond flanked by overgrown cemetery?check; deserted, picturesque, haunted plantation mansion?check), and the plot is too subservient to atmosphere and theme. Still, this interesting effort will undoubtedly collect some rave reviews and therefore deserves consideration.?Robert E. Brown, Onondaga Cty. Brush Up Your Poetry! Michael Macrone; illustrations by Tom Lulevitch Cader Books ; Andrews and McMeel, 1st ed., New York, Kansas City, New York State, 1996
Does classic verse "knit your brow" or "whet your whistle"? Either way, you're quoting a great 14th century poet -- Chaucer -- who also coined the phrases "patience is a virtue" and "in one ear and out the other." <p> Brush Up Your Poetry! traces hundreds of similar sayings, mottoes and maxims to their often surprising roots in some of our greatest poetry. You will find the classically poetic, such as Browning's "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways"; as well as myriad well-known phrases that may surprise you, such as Pope's "a little learning is a dangerous thing," and Longfellow's "into each life some rain must fall." All the memorable lines are placed in context, enabling you to enjoy the poetry, and all the poets are described in concise sketches showing their hearts, minds, and meaning. Spanning Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Whitman, Yeats, Eliot, and Frost, this volume reminds us that poetry is not only alive and well, but also a language we actually speak every day.</p>

The members of each generation - those who lived through the war, and those conceived and born during its terror - must assess their pasts and their collective futures. Nazimova : a biography Lambert, Gavin New York: A.A. Knopf: Distributed by Random House, 1st ed., New York, New York State, 1997
A major rediscovery - a full-scale biography - of the electrifying Russian-born actress who brought Stanislavksy and Chekhov to American theatre, who was applauded, lionized, adored - a legend of the stage and screen for forty years, and then strangely forgotten. Her shockingly natural approach to acting transformed the theatre of her day. She thrilled Laurette Taylor. The first time Tennessee Williams saw her he knew he wanted to be a playwright ("She was so shatteringly powerful that I couldn't stay in my seat"). Eugene O'Neill said of her that she gave him his "first conception of a modern theatre." She introduced the American stage and its audience to Ibsen's New Woman, a woman hell-bent on independence. It was a role Nazimova embodied offstage as well. When she toured in a repertory of A Doll's House, The Master Builder, and Hedda Gabler from 1907 to 1910, she earned the then unheard-of sum of five million dollars for theatre manager Lee Shubert. Eight years later she went to Hollywood and signed a contract with Metro Pictures (before it was MGM) and became the highest-paid actress in silent pictures, ultimately writing, directing, and producing her own movies (Revelation, Stronger than Death, Billions, Salome). Four years later she formed her own film company. She was the only actress, other than Mae West, to become a movie star at forty, and was the first to cultivate the image of the "foreign" sophisticate, soon to be followed by Pola Negri, Greta Garbo, and Marlene Dietrich. Gavin Lambert was given exclusive access to her unpublished memoirs, letters, and notes. And now fifty years after her death, eighty years after her ascendancy as a giant figure to the American public, Lambert has brilliantly re-created the life and work of this complex, dark, glamorous, and important figure.

Dream Boy: A Novel Grimsley, Jim Simon and Schuster, 1994
First love is never easy. But when the new boy in a small town is being secretly abused by his father, first love might be the only thing that can save him. With his mother busy in the kitchen and his drunken father reading scripture in the living room, Nathan can watch his schoolmate Roy from his upstairs bedroom window and dream about a life free from his father's night-time prowling. Nathan feels safer with Roy in the house next door and safer still with Roy beside him. Studying algebra shoulder to shoulder on Nathan's bed, one thing leads to another. But where will love lead Nathan? In a corner of the rural South blistering with hatred and petty meanness, Nathan and Roy must hide their love from their friends, church, and families. But that comes easily to Nathan, who is used to keeping secrets. He is only afraid of the one secret he has always kept, even from Roy -- the terrible truth about his father that makes his life impossible. Fleeing the house one night with only a blanket to shelter him, Nathan escapes with Roy on a camping trip to the haunted ruins of a plantation. As the boys track a path through the otherworldly wilderness, a sense of unnerving peace begins to surface in Nathan, along with the awful certainty that he will never return home.

nexusstc/Nazimova : a biography/f491ea7c1200dc23f79285fae728f87c.pdf
Nazimova : a biography Gavin Lambert A.A. Knopf : Distributed by Random House, 1st ed., New York, New York State, 1997
A major rediscovery - a full-scale biography - of the electrifying Russian-born actress who brought Stanislavksy and Chekhov to American theatre, who was applauded, lionized, adored - a legend of the stage and screen for forty years, and then strangely forgotten. And now fifty years after her death, eighty years after her ascendancy as a giant figure to the American public, Lambert has brilliantly re-created the life and work of this complex, dark, glamorous, and important figure.

nexusstc/Der Dorfgeher.

Phantom Empires: The Novels Of Alexander Lernet-holenia And The Question Of Postimperial Austrian Identity (studies In Austrian Literature, Culture And Thought) Robert von Dassanowsky Riverside, CA: Ariadne Press, Studies in Austrian literature, culture, and thought, Riverside, CA, California, 1996
A Former Austro-hungarian Officer And A Nobleman, Alexander Lernet-holenia (1897-1976) Was A Writer Obsessed With The Related Concepts Of Postimperial Austrian National Identity, Central European Regionalism, And Monarchism. Throughout Most Of His Wide-ranging Oeuvre, Which Includes Novels, Novellas, Historical And Biographical Studies, Short Stories, Essays, Poetry, Plays, And Film Scripts, He Conveyed The Image Of An Austria Inescapably Haunted By The Sociocultural Elements Of The Lost Austro-hungarian Empire. Reevaluation Of Lernet-holenia's Work Is Overdue, Because His Fiction, Previously Understood Only As Imperial Nostalgia, Offers A Significant Representation Of Twentieth-century Austrian History From A Conservative Viewpoint. Using A Sociopolitical Approach, The Present Study Analyzes The Author's Critical Evaluations Of Post-imperial Austrian Problems Of National Identity. Ten Of Lernet-holenia's Works Published Between 1931 And 1969 - Nine Novels And One Novella Which Deal Specifically With Austrian Society - Are Examined. I. Requiem For A Myth (1918-1934) -- Ii. Slander (european Women Writers) Linda Lê; translated by Esther Allen University Of Nebraska Press, European women writers series, Lincoln, Neb, United States, 1997
Like author Linda Le, the young woman who narrates this novel is from Vietnam and is a writer, a "dirty foreigner writing in French." The narrator has distanced herself not only from Vietnamese society but also from her family. Her story is an exercise in clear-eyed fury revealing three generations of a cursed family. The grandfather was a lunatic the family locked away and declared dead to avoid shame; the father is a failed artist and humiliated cuckold; the mother is a simpering beauty consumed with lust; the uncle is declared insane because of his incestuous love for his sister, who hanged herself. The narrator, on the verge of a profound depression ever since her mother told her she was illegitimate, alternates her story with her uncle's journal. In an acid style burning with compressed lyricism and savage irony, these parallel monologues sketch misfortune's family tree.

Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania Zimmerman, Dale A. (Dale Allen), 1928-; Turner, Donald A; Pearson, David J., 1941- Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, Princeton, N.J, New Jersey, 1996
Here is the definitive guide to the birds of Kenya and, indeed, to all of Eastern Africa. For the first time, each of the 1,114 species of the region is described and illustrated. This long-awaited book includes detailed information for every species, including appearance, plumage, vocalization, habits, status, and distribution, as well as detailed treatments of habitats and ranges. The product of more than ten years of development and field testing, <i>Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania</i> renders obsolete all other guides to the area. <p>The Republic of Kenya is home to more bird species than any other African nation, with the exception of Zaire, which has a land area four times greater than that of Kenya. This book serves as both a handbook and a field guide to this fascinating region--one that will meet the needs of professional ornithologists and amateur birders alike. It is the only guide to this region that is truly comprehensive. In 112 color plates and numerous line drawings, every one of Kenya's 1,080 bird species is illustrated. In addition, 34 species from northern Tanzania are illustrated and described. In all, approximately 90 percent of Tanzania's birds are included, as are more than 85 percent of the birds of Uganda and a majority of all species endemic to the entire area.</p> <p>"In East Africa, where Kenya alone boasts nearly 1,100 species, scarcely more than half are figured in the most widely used field guide. Because there has been so much guesswork by traveling birders about the hundreds of unfigured species, a superb team has finally done something about it and filled the gap. There will be no more guesswork.... The present volume should be hailed not only by birders but by conservationists aware of the urgent need for African governments to establish strong strategies to preserve their rich natural heritage."--<i>From the foreword by Roger Tory Peterson</i></p>

The god of impertinence : a novel [by] Sten Nadolny; translated from the German by Breon Mitchell Viking Adult, New York, New York State, 1997
The naked, charcoal-colored man with red hair who steals the flag from the police station in Greece on a sunny Spring day obviously isn't ordinary; indeed, it could be said - and it would be true - that he is, well, extraordinary. He is none other than Hermes, god of stolen kisses, insolence, erotic freedom, turmoil, sleep, thievery, and messenger to the gods. Hermes is looking for adventure and love, preferably the physical kind. He has been liberated to enchant, to save the world from the corruption of crass cynicism and to resurrect virtues of mischief, curiosity, imagination, and daring...and to fall in love. Unsurprisingly, Hermes' new world seems very, very weird to him - after all, he was kept in chains in a volcanic crater for 2,187 years. Meanwhile, Zeus has been disempowered and escapes to America - where he plays rounds of golf in Missouri - after his wife, Hera, discovers haute couture. Hephaestus, that degenerate, neurotic god of volcanoes, is now "the chief." He has advanced from the blacksmith of old into the commander of human technology and lord of a world driven by computers. Even Ares, the god of war, is subservient to Hephaestus. Even though Hermes finds himself in a strange and confusing age, unsure of why he was freed, this emblem of piratical daring crisscrosses the world in amazement, chasing...who else but a light-skinned beauty. His travels lead him from Europe to Athens (Georgia), to Sparta (Illinois) and, yes, above and beyond human boundaries. On his odyssey, tapping the minds and "having the ear" of brain specialists, rappers, graffiti artists, Hermes realizes that he must supercharge those qualities of impertinence and roguery with godlike impetus. It is the only way he himself can survive. To do so, however, he first has to lead Hephaestus back into the fold of the family...or defeat him...or both.
