The Cambridge Companion to Modern British Women Playwrights Elaine Aston, Janelle G. Reinelt Cambridge University Press, Cambridge Companions to Literature, 1st edition, Cambridge, UK, New York, NY, USA, England, 2000-06-05
This Companion, first published in 2000, addresses the work of women playwrights in Britain throughout the twentieth century. The chapters explore the historical and theatrical contexts in which women have written for the theatre and examine the work of individual playwrights. A chronological section on playwriting from the 1920s to the 1970s is followed by chapters which raise issues of nationality and identity. Later sections question accepted notions of the canon and include chapters on non-mainstream writing, including black and lesbian performance. Each section is introduced by the editors, who provide a narrative overview of a century of women's drama and a thorough chronology of playwriting, set in political context. The collection includes essays on the individual writers Caryl Churchill, Sarah Daniels, Pam Gems and Timberlake Wertenbaker as well as extensive documentation of contemporary playwriting in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, including figures such as Liz Lochhead and Anne Devlin.

ia/rakishstagestudi0000hume.pdf
The rakish stage: studies in English drama, 1660-1800 Robert D. Hume. -- Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, Southern Illinois University Press, 1983

This important new collection is keyed to a fresh analysis of the ways in which meaning can be examined and the caution with which critics should proceed.

Writing with his customary extraordinary clarity, Hume argues for a move beyond the kinds of interpretation prevalent for the last 30 years based upon close reading. With subtlety and fine sense, "Content and Meaning in the Drama,” chapter one, outlines how to identify and analyze the "meaning” of plays in ways that go beyond questions of effective impact and enter the realm of ideas and commentary upon real-life material. In urging this move he cautions against lapsing into relativism or losing sight of the lessons to be learned from generic and historical context.

His essays present a survey of the drama of this period (concentrating on comedy), focusing on matters of content, ideology and values, impact, and genre. He presents a case for the study of some fine but neglected plays, demolishes some misleading clichés, and offers a view of the plays unwarped by inherited assumptions or personal preferences. To an extent quite unusual in a collection, his first essay provides a purpose and point for the subsequent essays and their concern with the values to be found in the plays and the impact they seem designed to have on an audience. As Hume states in the Preface, "I have assembled this collection of essays in the belief that they represent a coherent approach to the plays, and in the hope that they will prove provocative. I will be content if my arguments serve to focus future debate, whether they are accepted, rejected, or modified by later writers.”

Revenge Tragedies Bente A. Videbaek; Francis Beaumont; Cyril Tourneur; William Shakespeare; Thomas Kyd; John Fletcher College Publishing, Glen Allen, VA, United States, 2004
This collection of four revenge tragedies is the first in a series of Shakespeare in context volumes, which considers the plays of William Shakespeare as part of the intellectual climate of his day and here presents his Hamlet with Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, Cyril Tourneur's The Revenger's Tragedy, and Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher's The Maid's Tragedy. The first part of the general introduction explores Renaissance revenge tragedy's relationship to Seneca's revenge drama and traces the development of the genre; the second part presents the reader with the theatrical climate of the times and gives an overview of the actual stage and its possibilities. The four plays and their playwrights are individually introduced, and all texts are newly edited, annotated, and modernized. A short section of contemporary views on revenge and a glossary at the end of the book should prove helpful for students exploring the revenge tragedy sub-genre.

Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Comedy (Norton Critical Editions) Scott McMillin,ed. W. W. Norton & Company, Incorporated, Norton Critical Editions, Second Edition, 1997
This Second Edition builds on its predecessorвЂTMs strengths by adding a sixth play, Aphra BehnвЂTMs The Rover , a comedy that has clearly come into prominence in recent years. The plays are fully annotated for the modern reader and are accompanied by six illustrations. The close relationship between theater and society during the period continues to be the focus of “Contexts.” The editor offers contemporary discussions of the following topics: “On Wit, Humour, and Laughter: 1660–1775,” “The Collier Controversy: 1698,” “Steele and Dennis: On The Man of Mode and The Conscious Lovers ,” and “ Stages, Actors, and Audiences .” “Criticism” has been revised to reflect approaches in scholarly interpretations. Two seminal essays from the First Edition have been retained—Charles LambвЂTMs appreciation of the periodвЂTMs comedy and L. C. KnightsвЂTMs condemnation of it. New essays by Jocelyn Powell, Harriet Hawkins, Elin Diamond, Martin Price, and Laura Brown have been added. Illustrated.
