God, Philosophy and Academic Culture: A Discussion between Scholars in the AAR and APA (Aar Reflection and Theory in the Study of Religion, No. 11) Wainwright, William J., American Academy Of Religion, American Philosophical Association An American Academy of Religion Book, Reflection and theory in the study of religion ;, no. 11, Atlanta, Ga, Georgia, October 1996

A striking feature of the current philosophical scene is the division between those philosophers of religion primarily associated with the American Philosophical Association and those primarily associated with the American Academy of Religion. This difference is loosely correlated with two others: the comparative dominance of analytic philosophy in the APA and of hermeneutical philosophy in the AAR, and the greater visibility of traditional theists in the APA. In this book eight prominent philosophers of religion from these organizations explore the historical, cultural, and philosophical roots of these differences, their connections, and the prospects for rapprochement.

lgli/Why Read Pavel Florensky.pdf
WHY READ PAVEL FLORENSKY?. John P. Burgess, Andrew Louth Catholic University of America Press, Why Read?, 2024
This book offers an excellent, accessible introduction to the life and thought of Father Pavel Florensky, one of the most prominent religious philosophers of Russia’s highly creative Silver Age at the beginning of the twentieth century. Florensky, an Orthodox priest, died in Stalin’s gulag in 1937. His writings were long suppressed in the Soviet Union, and Western Protestant and Catholic theologians have known little about him. John Burgess argues that it is time to give Florensky his due. His worldview is as important today as it was during his lifetime: a deep sensitivity to the beauty of the natural world; a conviction that the religious cult—acts of worship and ritual—make human culture possible; and an understanding of the Christian faith as, above all, a way of seeing God’s glorious presence in all of creation. The book takes a unique approach by examining Florensky not primarily as an academic philosopher but rather as an Orthodox priest and theologian, who speaks out of his personal religious experience to communicate the Christian faith to people who are seeking truth but do not yet know church life. The book makes an original contribution to Florensky scholarship and literature, especially in the United States, where his colleagues Sergei Bulgakov and Nicholas Berdiaev have been better known. John Burgess is a Protestant theologian who has lived and travelled in Russia, and has visited key places associated with Florensky. The author’s experience, even as an outsider, of Orthodox worship and practice—its liturgical cycles, iconography, seasons of fasting and feasting, and monasteries and holy sites—has enabled him to understand Florensky’s admonition that one must enter into Orthodoxy in order to understand it (and Florensky’s) thinking.

lgli/THE TRINITY-SCOTT WILLIAMS.pdf
The Trinity Scott M. Williams Cambridge University Press, Elements in the Problems of God, First, 2024
The doctrine of the Trinity, proclaimed by Christians through the Nicene-Constantinople creed, is foundational to traditional Christian belief and worship of God. But is this doctrine logically coherent? How can there be three divine persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), each is God, and yet there is only one God? This is a fundamental question for philosophers, but theologians have additional questions. This Element addresses philosophical and theological issues concerning the Trinity: Hermeneutical and Logical problems, Personal Pronouns, Monarchy, Equality, the Greek vs. Latin filioque debate, Real Relations, Unity of Action, Self-Knowledge in the Trinity, and Simplicity. Based on my recent rediscovery of the sixth ecumenical council's (Constantinople III) clarifications of Trinitarian doctrine, this Element introduces Conciliar Trinitarianism and shows how it responds to the issues, including a resolution to the fundamental logical question. It also compares Conciliar Trinitarianism with Miaphysite, neo-Sabellian, Social, and other models of the Trinity.

The philosophy of religion: a consideration of the more profound aspects of religious thought William Sacheus Morgan New York, Philosophical Library, New York, Unknown, 1950
xv, 413 pages 23 cm The philosophy of religion is here presented from the viewpoint of a unitary conception of the universe, which it is hoped will do justice to the demands of the intellect and the needs of the heart. None is more conscious than the author of the difficulties confronting this notion. To grasp the psychological and neural processes, physical and chemical energies, social and individual principles, environment and heredity, historical and natural interpretations of human life; the ethical, aesthetical and intellectually verifiable, the finite and infinite, the accidental and orderly, the permanent and evolving, - to mention only a few aspects, - under on comprehensive scheme, is a task which in its completeness is beyond present knowledge. There are, so it appears to our present vision, insuperable difficulties in the way of its realization. But it is an ideal worthy and persistent. Science and philosophy are converging to this end. And the ideal is particularly fascinating to religious thought. The writer holds it as a profound conviction, believing that the universe is such a whole that its divers phenomena may be most satisfactorily explained under the guidance of the principles of unity and continuity. He hopes this treatise may be a contribution to this end Bibliographical references included in "Notes" (p. 399-408) Book I : the nature of philosophy and of religion -- The attitude of philosophy -- The nature of religion -- Book II : the problem of knowing reality -- Knowledge as the realization of unity and harmony -- Kant's solution of the problem of knowledge -- Green's metaphysical theory -- Book III : Ultimate reality interpreted as a unifying and causal principle -- Spinoza's attempt to unify existence -- Scientific notions of unity -- Suggestions from the history of causation -- The psychology and metaphysics of causation -- Book IV : ultimate reality interpreted as an ethical and aesthetical principle -- The ethical interpretation of ultimate reality and its manifestations -- The problem of freedom -- The aestetical interpretation of ultimate reality -- Book V : ultimate reality in relation to the phenomena of the religious life and the destiny of man -- The phenomena of the religious life -- The hope of immortality; preliminary considerations -- Some of the sources from which the hope of immortality springs -- Metaphysical relations of the finite to the infinite -- Objections to immortality -- conclusion to argument of the treatise

The Cappadocian Reshaping of Metaphysics : Relational Being Giulio Maspero Cambridge University Press, Cambridge University Press, New York, 2023
In this volume, Giulio Maspero explores both the ontology and the epistemology of the Cappadocians from historical and speculative points of view. He shows how the Cappadocians developed a real Trinitarian Ontology through their reshaping of the Aristotelian category of relation, which they rescued from the accidental dimension and inserted into the immanence of the one divine and eternal substance. This perspective made possible a new conception of individuation. No longer exclusively linked to substantial difference, as in classical Greek philosophy, the concept was instead founded on the mutual relation of the divine Persons. The Cappadocians' metaphysical reshaping was also closely linked to a new epistemological conception based on apophaticism, which shattered the logical closure of their opponents, and anticipated results that modern research has subsequently highlighted, Bridging the late antique philosophy with Patristics, Maspero' s study allows us to find the relational traces within the Trinity in the world and in history.

The Wisdom Of Religious Commitment Terrence W. Tilley Georgetown University Press, PS, 1995
By exploring a practical, rather than propositional, understanding of religious belief, this book provides a new construct through which to view philosophy of religion. Terrence W. Tilley shifts the focus of debate from the justification of rational belief to the exercise of wisdom in making or maintaining a commitment to religious practices. It is through practices, Tilley concludes, that religious belief is formed. After analyzing the strengths and limitations of the modern approaches, Tilley applies the concept of wisdom to the process of making a religious commitment. Wisdom, as explored by Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, and John Henry Newman, may be thought of as the bridge between intellectual and moral virtues. Roughly, it can be described as the ability to put intellect into action in a context. Because wisdom is a virtue requiring concrete display, the book discusses the wisdom of commitment to specific religious practices of a range of traditions. These examples demonstrate the issues and complexities involved in the wisdom of making a religious commitment. This important challenge to contemporary philosophy of religion will be of special interest to students and teachers of theology and philosophy of religion.
