Dan Appleman's Win32 API Puzzle Book and Tutorial for Visual Basic Programmers Daniel Appleman APress ; Springer [distributor, Books for professionals by professionals, San Francisco, Calif, 1999
The key to accessing the power of every operating system is its application programming interface (API). Visual Basic can access only part of the Windows API without special help. To write the most powerful possible programs, VB programmers need to work with all of the API. The big problem for VB programmers in trying to do so is that all of the available documentation on the Windows API is written for C++ programmers. In other words, the directions for using the API is written in a language that VB programmers don't understand. Dan Appleman's Win32 API Puzzle Book and Tutorials for Visual BasicProgrammers shows VB programmers how to turbocharge Visual Basic by teaching them how to understand Microsoft's documentation to control the entire Windows API. Appleman's unique puzzle format includes 32 sample programs that almost&emdashbut don't quite&emdashwork. Each puzzle has a solution with an in-depth explanation of the problem, why it occurs, and why the solution works. By avoiding the usual dry ''lecture'' style so common in technical books, this guide will keep you awake&emdashin fact, some of the puzzles may keep you awake nights searching for a solution. And when you've finished, you'll have an understanding of the technology that will qualify you as a true API guru. With a writing style that combines technical competence, humor, and a bit of ''attitude,'' Appleman proves once again in this long-awaited complement to his previous bestseller, Visual Basic Programmer's Guide to the Win32 API , that learning advanced technology can (and should) be fun.

Dan Appleman's Win32 API Puzzle Book and Tutorial for Visual Basic Programmers Daniel Appleman APress ; Springer [distributor, Unique, 1, 1999
This long-awaited complement to Appleman's previous bestseller shows programmers how to turbocharge VB by describing how to control the entire Windows API. Divided into three parts, the book begins with a series of programming puzzles of increasing complexity. Each puzzle describes a typical API function, followed by a small VB program applying the function. These programs almost work but are all missing something. Readers are challenged to solve the puzzle and fix the program -- thus learning in the process. The second part contains solutions to the puzzles, along with in-depth technical explanations, while the final part concludes with general tutorials that readers can refer to for help in solving the problems.

Programming Visual Basic 2008 : build .NET 3.5 applications with Microsoft's popular RAD Tool for business Tim Patrick O'Reilly Media, Incorporated, 1. ed, Beijing, 2008
Ever since Visual Basic was merged into .NET, it's become the core language for creating business applications with Windows. The latest version, VB 2008, is even more useful -- and provides even more incentive for migrating from VB 6. All it lacks is a good book on how to harness its power. Programming Visual Basic 2008 fills the void. Written in a lively and engaging style by a developer who's grown up with Visual Basic, including both VB 6 and VB .NET, this hands-on guide addresses the core topics of the new VB, from basic to complex, with plenty of code examples. Programming Visual Basic 2008 also examines .NET programming from the application level with a chapter-by-chapter plan for developing, documenting, and deploying a full data-driven application. You learn, step-by-step, how to build and deploy a library management system, complete with patron, inventory, and barcode support. The book's broad range of topics include:VB language and its syntaxAn overview of the .NET FrameworkObject-oriented development in VB and .NETGeneric objects, collections, and nullable typesDesign and management of software projectsIntegrating desktop features with Windows FormsDatabase design with SQL Server 2008 Database interface design with ADO.NETThe new LINQ feature, and how to use it within VB and .NETEmbedding XML within application source codeEncryption and authentication in .NETInteracting with data stored in files and directoriesWeb development using ASP.NETDeploying an application to a user's workstationAnd much moreProgramming Visual Basic 2008 is ideal for VB 6 programmers who are ready to move to .NET, as well as VB.NET programmers who wish to improve their project-focused software development skills. Programming novices and developers coming from other languages will find the book valuable because of its language instruction and project design knowledge. Once you finish the book, you will have a firm grasp of VB 2008's core concepts and language elements, and understand how to build VB projects as they were intended -- as complete, cohesive solutions.

__Programming Visual Basic 2008__ fills the void. Written in a lively and engaging style by a developer who's grown up with Visual Basic, including both VB 6 and VB .NET, this hands-on guide addresses the core topics of the new VB, from basic to complex, with plenty of code examples. __Programming Visual Basic 2008__ also examines .NET programming from the application level with a chapter-by-chapter plan for developing, documenting, and deploying a full data-driven application. You learn, step-by-step, how to build and deploy a library management system, complete with patron, inventory, and barcode support. The book's broad range of topics include: * VB language and its syntax * An overview of the .NET Framework * Object-oriented development in VB and .NET * Generic objects, collections, and nullable types * Design and management of software projects * Integrating desktop features with Windows Forms * Database design with SQL Server 2008 * Database interface design with ADO.NET * The new LINQ feature, and how to use it within VB and .NET * Embedding XML within application source code * Encryption and authentication in .NET * Interacting with data stored in files and directories * Web development using ASP.NET * Deploying an application to a user's workstation * And much more __Programming Visual Basic 2008__ is ideal for VB 6 programmers who are ready to move to .NET, as well as VB.NET programmers who wish to improve their project-focused software development skills. Programming novices and developers coming from other languages will find the book valuable because of its language instruction and project design knowledge. Once you finish the book, you will have a firm grasp of VB 2008's core concepts and language elements, and understand how to build VB projects as they were intended -- as complete, cohesive solutions.

Sometimes you just need to solve a problem and get on with your work. To that end, Visual Basic 2008 Recipes is a compendium of practical solutions for busy VB .NET programmers. Create time for the more interesting aspects of your VB .NET project by solving common problems with the practical solutions and dozens of code examples in this book. Important new .NET 3.5 technologies, such as Windows Presentation Framework (WPF) and Language Integrated Query (LINQ), are covered, and each chapter addresses a specific problem domain, including database access, multimedia, XML manipulation, networking, and security. The code is free to download so you can use the recipes immediately. - Take advantage of quality, ready–made solutions to common Visual Basic programming problems. - Avoid the tedium of having to reinvent the wheel. Focus instead on the more interesting problems specific to your application. - Learn from and be inspired by what the authors have done. Use their work as stepping stones to solve even more complex problems. What you’ll learn - Cleanly separate user–interface logic from business logic through the use of .NET 3.5’s WPF. - Store data to and retrieve data from your relational database using LINQ. - Manipulate XML data using LINQ. - Make your programs dynamically configurable through the judicious application of reflection. - Take advantage of multiple CPU cores by writing multithreaded applications. - Integrate multimedia into your Visual Basic projects. Who is this book for? Visual Basic 2008 Recipes is written for Visual Basic developers who have at least some experience in developing Visual Basic solutions. The book contains recipes appealing to intermediate through advanced developers.

Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing (Book and CD edition) Wallace Wang= San Francisco : No Starch Press, 1 edition, March 15, 2006
Many beginning programming books try to teach the reader three things at the same time: how to write a program, how to write a program using a particular programming language, and how to write a program using a particular compiler. To avoid this triple source of potential confusion, Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing provides a short primer on how programming works in general, regardless of the programming language used. Once readers understand the general principles behind computer programming, the book then teaches readers how to use the Visual Basic Express program itself and how to write programs using the Visual Basic language. The CD includes numerous short source code examples that you can run and modify, and movies that show how to accomplish specific tasks with Visual Basic 2005 Express. This reference provides a short primer on how programming works, regardless of the programming language. Once readers understand the general principles behind computer programming, the book then teaches how to use and write programs in Visual Basic Express. Includes CD. Consumable. xx, 452 p. : 24 cm + Includes index

Visual Basic 2005 Express: Now Playing (Book and CD edition) Wallace Wang No Starch Press, Incorporated, 1 edition, March 15, 2006
This book is advertised as a "Beginner's Guide" to Visual Basic 2005 and any beginner might benefit from this book. On the other hand I would recommend this book as a Reference Manual for those already familiar with VB Express and not as a beginning guide. The author covers nearly every aspect of the Visual Basic(VB)IDE (Integrated Development Environment) via examples contained within the book; however, one begins to wonder where or what is the ultimate outcome. Perhaps some practical application examples may enhance the learning process of anyone totally unfamiliar with this IDE but the author's methodology of explaining the various aspects of this programming environmnet was un-appealing. On the other hand, anyone really dedicated to becoming a VB Programmer will find this reference material very useful.
