Positive Psychology 101 (Psych 101) Philip C. Watkins, Ph.D Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, The Psych 101 Series, New York, NY, 2015
Does happiness matter? What are happy people like? Can people enhance their sense of well-being? One of the most important movements in psychology during the past two decades, positive psychology is a discipline that seeks to understand the factors that contribute the most to a well lived and fulfilling life. Written by a highly respected scholar and educator of positive psychology, this is a concise, accessible introduction to this popular field of study. Appropriate for anyone seeking an introduction to positive psychology and an ideal brief text for relevant college courses, this book surveys the origins and current state of what is known about this evolving field. It places a particular emphasis on well-being as the leading edge of positive psychology research and practice. The text encompasses the key theories and current research supporting positive psychology, and discusses its three "pillars": subjective well-being and positive emotions, psychological traits, and positive institutions. It introduces the foundational concepts underlying positive psychology and describes the specific strengths and virtues upon which it focuses. Woven throughout is the premise that gratitude matters to one's happiness. The heart of the book explores such major questions as: What is happiness? How do one's circumstances impact happiness? What are the traits of well-being? Are relationships important to happiness? With a nod to the expanding parameters of human interactions today, the text examines the impact of electronic relationships on well-being. It also discusses and responds to the most significant criticisms of the positive psychology movement and helps readers to understand how the science of positive psychology can enhance their own well-being. Insights into the past and future of positive psychology conclude this thoughtful text. Key Features: Addresses the origins and major tenets of positive psychology Provides a concise and accessible introduction ideal for college courses and seminars Emphasizes well-being as the leading edge of positive psychology research and practice Helps readers understand how positive psychology can help them enhance their own well-being Written by a noted scholar and educator of positive psychology

Shadows Linger: A Novel of the Black Company (The Second Chronicle of The Black Company) Glen Charles Cook [Cook, Glen Charles] Tor Fantasy, Chronicle of the Black Company -- 2nd, 1st ed., New York, New York State, 1984
The children had been sent to watch the road. Rumor said the Lady meant to break the Rebel movement in Tally province. And here her soldiers came. Closer now. Grim, hard-looking men. Veterans.“It’s them!” the boy gasped. Fear and awe filled his voice. Grudging admiration edged it. “That’s the Black Company.” He touched the girl’s wrist. “Let’s go.” They scurried through the weeds.A shadow lay upon their path. They looked and went pale. Three horsemen stared down at them. The boy gaped. Nobody could have slipped up unheard. “Goblin!”The small, frog-faced man in the middle grinned. “At your service, laddy-boy.”The boy was terrified. He shouted, “Run!” If his sister could escape... Goblin made a circular gesture. Pale pink fire tangled his fingers. He made a throwing motion. The boy fell, fighting invisible bonds like a fly caught in a spider’s web. His sister whimpered.“Pick them up,” Goblin told his companions. “They should tell an interesting tale.”The second volume of THE BLACK COMPANY trilogy.

Shadows Linger: A Novel of the Black Company (The Second Chronicle of The Black Company) Cook, Glen Macmillan, Chronicles of the Black Company 2, 1990
Review "Timely and timeless...The author of the Black Company series brings a stark realism to his tales of imaginary lands." --_Library Journal_ (starred review) on _The Tyranny of the Night _ "Complex and compelling...It is a powerful fantasy, combining a fast-moving plot with an introduction into this world of patriarchal schism, greedy churchmen and nobles, and cynical soldiers bent on survival." --_VOYA on The Tyranny of the Night _"The thing about Glen Cook is that with The Black Company he singlehandedly changed the face of fantasy--something a lot of people didn't notice and maybe still don't. He brought the story down to a human level, dispensing with the clich? archetypes of princes, kings, and evil sorcerers. Reading his stuff was like reading Vietnam War fiction on peyote." --Steven Erikson, author of Gardens of the Moon Product Description Mercenary soldiers in the service of the Lady, the Black Company stands against the rebels of the White Rose. "Since the mid-nineteenth century, medicine has undergone a revolution, improving the quality and length of human life in the process. With fascinating detail, this volume traces the evolution of treatments for a variety of conditions. Antiseptics and anesthesia made surgery possible and survivable. Vaccines wiped out the lethal illnesses of cholera, typhus, polio, yellow fever, and others. While smallpox was declared officially eradicated in 1980, another devastating disease surfaced on the world stage, HIV/AIDS, to further challenge the development of medical treatments. Today, DNA, artificial intelligence, and stem cell therapy are some of the weapons used to fight against pain and disease. Media literacy terms and questions round out the text and aid readers in analyzing over a century of news coverage."-- Provided by publisher

The Women of the 116th Congress : Portraits of Power Roxane Gay, Staff Of The New York Times, The New The New York Times, Elizabeth D. Herman, Celeste Sloman New York, NY: Abrams Image, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., New York, NY, 2019
A photographic celebration of the women of the 116th—the most diverse Congress in American history.   The first woman Speaker of the House. The first female combat veteran. The first Native American women. The first Muslim women. The first openly gay member of the Senate. These are just some of the remarkable firsts represented by the women of the 116th Congress, the most diverse and inclusive in American history.   Just over a century ago, Jeannette Rankin of Montana was the first and only woman in the House of Representatives. By the time of the 116th Congress, a total of 131 were seated in both chambers.  The 2018 midterm elections brought a seismic change—and this book, a collaboration between New York Times photo editors Beth Flynn and Marisa Schwartz Taylor and photographers Elizabeth D. Herman and Celeste Sloman—documents the women of the 116th Congress, photographed in the style of historical portrait paintings commonly seen in the halls of power to highlight the stark difference between how we’ve historically viewed governance and how it has evolved. Also featured are an illustrated timeline and list of firsts for women in Congress; “Her Vote, Her Voice” sections throughout that highlight historical moments in female politics; and an extended introduction and foreword by Roxane Gay. The Women of the 116th Congress is a testament to what representation in the United States looks like in the twenty-first century—and an inspiration for what it may look like in the years to come.

GOLDEN FLEA: a true story of collecting, obsession, and the search for a one-in-a-million find Rips, Michael W. W. Norton & Company, Incorporated, First edition, 2020
A lovable oddball cast of characters is at the heart of this treasure-hunt through the last days of one of the greatest flea markets on earth. "[Rips] has humanity, humor and the gift of a limpid, agile, unpretentious prose style.... A captivating portrait."—Ben Downing, Wall Street Journal Across America and around the world, people wander through flea markets to search for lost treasures. For decades, no such market was more renowned than the legendary Chelsea flea market, which sprawled over several blocks and within an old garage on the west side of Manhattan. Visitors would trawl through booths crammed with vintage dresses, rare books, ancient swords, glass eyeballs, Afghan rugs, West African fetish dolls, Old Master paintings, and much more. In The Golden Flea, the acclaimed writer Michael Rips takes readers on a trip through this charmed world. With a beguiling style that has won praise from Joan Didion and Susan Orlean, Rips recounts his obsession with the flea and its treasures and provides a fascinating account of the business of buying and selling antiques. Along the way, he introduces us to the flea's lovable oddball cast of vendors, pickers, and collectors, including a haberdasher who only sells to those he deems worthy; an art dealer whose obscure paintings often go for enormous sums; a troubadour who sings to attract customers; and the Prophet, who finds wisdom among all the treasures and trash. As Rips's passion for collecting grows and the flea's last days loom, he undertakes a quest to prove the provenance of a mysterious painting that just might be the one.

Drone Warfare , The New York Times Editorial Staff, The New York Times Editorial Staff The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc, Rosen Publishing Group, New York, NY, 2020
Military drones have revolutionized warfare in the 21st century. Unmanned aerial vehicles, or U.A.V.s, allow the Air Force to monitor and neutralize targets remotely, keeping pilots and comrades in enemy territory safer in the process. Central to the U.S. counterterrorism campaign since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, models such as the Predator and Global Hawk have been used in Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen, among other areas in the Middle East and Africa purported to have terrorist activity. This cool book follows the development of U.S. drone policy, documenting the effects on U.S. forces, foreign relations, and the legal and ethical concerns of covert, remote airstrikes. Media literacy questions and terms challenge readers to further analyze the reporting styles and devices used to cover this uniquely modern issue.

Changing the Game: Title IX, Gender, and College Athletics (Reacting to the Past) McFall, Kelly, author; Perkiss, Abigail, 1981- author Norton & Company Limited, W. W.; W. W. Norton & Company, "Reacting to the past" series, First edition, New York, NY, 2019
This Reacting to the Past game is set at a fictional university in the mid-1990s. A debate over the role of athletics quickly expands to encompass demands that women's sports and athletes receive more resources and opportunities. The result is a firestorm of controversy on and off campus. Drawing on congressional testimonies from the Title IX hearings, players advance their views in student government meetings, talk radio shows, town meetings, and impromptu rallies. As students wrestle with questions of gender parity and the place of athletics in higher education, they learn about the implementation--and implications--of legal change in the United States. Reacting to the Past is an award-winning series of immersive role-playing games that actively engage students in their own learning. Students assume the roles of historical characters to practice critical thinking, primary source analysis, and both written and spoken argument. Adopted by thousands of instructors at all types of institutions, Reacting to the Past games are flexible enough to be used across the curriculum, from first-year general education classes and discussion sections of lecture classes to capstone experiences and honors programs.

nexusstc/In The Company Of Black Men: The African Influence on African American Culture in New York City/e61298ce00c59cfb9408d526b6ef101b.epub
In the company of Black men : the African influence on African American culture in New York City Craig Steven Wilder New York University Press, New Ed edition, February 1, 2005
**Traces the development of African-American community traditions over three centuries** From the subaltern assemblies of the enslaved in colonial New York City to the benevolent New York African Society of the early national era to the formation of the African Blood Brotherhood in twentieth century Harlem, voluntary associations have been a fixture of African-American communities. __In the Company of Black Men__ examines New York City over three centuries to show that enslaved Africans provided the institutional foundation upon which African-American religious, political, and social culture could flourish. Arguing that the universality of the voluntary tradition in African-American communities has its basis in collectivism—a behavioral and rhetorical tendency to privilege the group over the individual—it explores the institutions that arose as enslaved Africans exploited the potential for group action and mass resistance. Craig Steven Wilder’s research is particularly exciting in its assertion that Africans entered the Americas equipped with intellectual traditions and sociological models that facilitated a communitarian response to oppression. Presenting a dramatic shift from previous work which has viewed African-American male associations as derivative and imitative of white male counterparts, __In the Company of Black Men__ provides a ground-breaking template for investigating antebellum black institutions.
