159 pages : 23 cm " St. Thomas Aquinas is enriched by the author's unique ability to see the world through the saint's eyes, a fresh and animated view that shows us Aquinas as no other biography has. Acclaimed as the best book ever written on Aquinas by such outstanding Thomists as Jacques Maritain, Etienne Gilson, and Anton Pegis, this brilliant biography will completely capture the reader and leave him desirous of reading Aquinas' own monumental work."--Publisher description

The Communist Manifesto [Manifesto of the Communist Party] Marx, Karl, Engels, Friedrich Martino Fine Books, Place of publication not identified, 2012
2012 Reprint of 1910 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "The Communist Manifesto," originally titled "Manifesto of the Communist Party" is a short 1848 publication written by the political theorists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It has since been recognized as one of the world's most influential political manuscripts. Commissioned by the Communist League, it laid out the League's purposes and program. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism, rather than a prediction of communism's potential future forms. The book contains Marx and Engels' theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles." It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism. This edition is the last edition edited and annotated by Engels himself. Contains extensive footnotes and annotations

A daughter of Han : the autobiography of a Chinese working woman Pruitt, Ida, Tai Tai, Ning Lao Martino Fine Books, [Place of publication not identified], Unknown, 2011
2011 Reprint of 1945 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In "A Daughter of Han" author Ida Pruitt presents the autobiography of a Chinese working woman. Through this story the reader gains insight into the China of the poor, of women, and of the provinces. The subject of the autobiography, Ning Lao Tai-Tai, is also interesting as she lived in the period, the late 19th to mid 20th century, during which China underwent its most dramatic changes. This is a genuine, warm-blooded, dramatic chronicle of a woman's life, of the life of one of the "little people"; their wisdom and hardship and daily toil lighted by affection and gaiety that persist despite the endless pursuit of food and shelter to stay alive.

Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy : A Systematic Individual and Social Psychiatry Dr. Eric Berne Hauraki Publishing, INscribe Digital, [San Francisco?], 2016
<p>Originally published in 1961, this book outlines a new, unified system of individual and social psychiatry that were introduced in the United States around that time with remarkable success in various hospitals and other psychiatric establishments. Essentially designed for group therapy, this approach is now used by institutions, group workers, and in private practice with neurotics, psychotics, sexual psychopaths, psychosomatic cases, and adolescents.Transactional analysis begins its program by initiating the individual patients into the theory upon which the treatment is based. First attaining a measure of self-knowledge through private sessions with the analyst, the patient then meets with other patients in group therapy, participating in a series of personally meaningful relation-ships in which he becomes increasingly aware of the cause and nature of his illness, preparing at the same time to overcome it."A comprehensive method of treatment that has no precedent in its concreteness of structure without at the same time diminishing the dynamic quality of the treatment....No one to my knowledge has presented such a new approach."—Dr. Milton Schwebel, Professor of Education, New York University<br></p>

Nature's harmonic unity : a treatise on its relation to proportional form Samuel Colman, Clarence Arthur Coan The Knickerbocker Press, Place of publication not identified, 2009
2009 Reprint of the original 1912 edition. Paperback 327pp. With 302 illustrations by the author. Baumring's Top Pick for an Understanding of Harmonic Order of Nature. Beautiful Analysis of the Harmonic Structure of All Types of Forms in Nature Clearly Showing the Order of their Form. "A monumental work of great erudition showing the fundamental unity of all design in nature, from the microscopic to the galactic, but most especially the unity of design in architecture, and biology. The original 1912 edition is very rare. This is the only cloth reprint, other reprints lack illustrations. The handful of folding plates in the original edition have here been reduced to fit one page each. It has been interesting to compare this work with that of Thompson's On Growth and Form (see catalogue 75), and then to compare these two books with Neal's All Done with Mirrors. Neal, who writes as a Platonist, concentrates on the ancient world, and shows that the ancients knew most if not all that Thompson and Colman present, and more, for Neal brings it all into the spiritual realm and makes it obvious that the principals of science and math are nothing but the hand of god made manifest."-Todd Pratum. Samuel Colman was born in Portland, Maine in 1832. His father was a fine-arts bookseller and publisher who moved to New York City while Samuel, Jr. was a boy. His store on Broadway became a center for artists and literary types. In New York, Colman studied painting under Hudson River artist Asher B. Durand. At age 18 he showed his first painting, "Morning," at the National Academy of Design; in 1860 he was already an associate, and by 1862 he had become a full academician. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, the Maryland Historical Society, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. From 1860 to 1862 and from 1871 to 1875, Colman traveled to France, Italy, Spain and Morocco, studying and painting. His oils before 1870 are characterized by a lucid style indicative of an affinity for watercolor, which he also used. His later work shows the influence of the barbizon painters in bucolic, unpopulated scenes, broadly executed. Colman was a many faceted man: etcher, collector and authority on oriental art and porcelains. He did some interior design and worked for Louis Comfort Tiffany and John Lafarge in the 1880's. He wrote two books on art, Nature's Harmonic Unity, and Proportional Form. Samuel Coleman died in New York in 1920.

The Picture of Dorian Gray (Classics To Go) Oscar Wilde Otbebookpublishing : Made available through hoopla, INscribe Digital, [United States], 2014
The novel begins on a beautiful summer day with Lord Henry Wotton, a strongly-opinionated man, observing the sensitive artist Basil Hallward painting the portrait of a handsome young man named Dorian Gray, who is Basil's ultimate muse. After hearing Lord Henry's world view, Dorian begins to think beauty is the only worthwhile aspect of life. He wishes that the portrait Basil painted would grow old in his place. Under the influence of Lord Henry (who relishes the hedonic lifestyle and is a major exponent thereof), Dorian begins to explore his senses. He discovers amazing actress Sibyl Vane, who performs Shakespeare plays in a dingy theatre. Dorian approaches her and soon proposes marriage. Sibyl, who refers to him as "Prince Charming", swoons with happiness, but her protective brother James tells her that if "Prince Charming" harms her, he will certainly kill him. Dorian invites Basil and Lord Henry to see Sibyl perform in 'Romeo and Juliet'. Sibyl, whose only knowledge of love was love of theatre, casts aside her acting abilities through the experience of true love with Dorian. Disheartened, Dorian rejects her, saying her beauty was in her acting, and he is no longer interested in her. When he returns home, he notices that his portrait has changed. Dorian realises his wish has come true – the portrait now bears a subtle sneer and will age with each sin he commits, while his own appearance remains unchanged... (Excerpt from Wikipedia)

lgli/The Trivium_ The Liberal Arts of Logic, Grammar, and Rhetoric - Sister Miriam Joseph.epub
The trivium : the liberal arts of logic, grammar, and rhetoric : the understanding the nature and function of language by Sister Miriam Joseph; edited by Marguerite McGlinn Paul Dry Books, Incorporated, 2022
<p>Who sets language policy today? Who made whom the grammar doctor? Lacking the equivalent of l'Académie française, we English speakers must find our own way looking for guidance or vindication in source after source. McGuffey's Readers introduced nineteenth-century students to "correct" English. Strunk and White's Elements of Style and William Safire's column, "On Language," provide help on diction and syntax to contemporary writers and speakers. Sister Miriam Joseph's book, The Trivium: The Liberal Arts of Logic, Grammar, and Rhetoric, invites the reader into a deeper understanding--one that includes rules, definitions, and guidelines, but whose ultimate end is to transform the reader into a liberal artist.</p> <p>A liberal artist seeks the perfection of the human faculties. The liberal artist begins with the language arts, the trivium, which is the basis of all learning because it teaches the tools for reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Thinking underlies all these activities. Many readers will recognize elements of this book: parts of speech, syntax, propositions, syllogisms, enthymemes, logical fallacies, scientific method, figures of speech, rhetorical technique, and poetics. The Trivium, however, presents these elements within a philosophy of language that connects thought, expression, and reality.</p> <p>"Trivium" means the crossroads where the three branches of language meet. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, students studied and mastered this integrated view of language. Regrettably, modern language teaching keeps the parts without the vision of the whole. Inspired by the possibility of helping students "acquire mastery over the tools of learning" Sister Miriam Joseph and other teachers at Saint Mary's College designed and taught a course on the trivium for all first year students. The Trivium resulted from that noble endeavor.</p> <p>The liberal artist travels in good company. Sister Miriam Joseph frequently cites passages from William Shakespeare, John Milton, Plato, the Bible, Homer, and other great writers. The Paul Dry Books edition of The Trivium provides new graphics and notes to make the book accessible to today's readers. Sister Miriam Joseph told her first audience that "the function of the trivium is the training of the mind for the study of matter and spirit, which constitute the sum of reality. The fruit of education is culture, which Mathew Arnold defined as 'the knowledge of ourselves and the world.'" May this noble endeavor lead many to that end.</p>

The Return of the Killer Cat illustrated by Steve Cox [Place of publication not identified]: Puffin Books, [Place of publication not identified], England, 2011

A Socialist Empire: The Incas of Peru Louis Baudin [Baudin, Louis] Martino Fine Books, 2011
2011 Reprint of 1961 Edition. Many social scientists have attempted to lump the unique Inca society into modern political and economic categories. Louis Baudin argued that Incan society was socialistic. He claimed that the ayllu system is what classified the Inca as a system of state socialism. Baudin defines state socialism as being based on the idea of the regulative action of a central power in social relations. According to Baudin, the idea of private property in Europe had been in existence for centuries, but no such idea existed at the times of the Incas. He claims, that society in Peru rested on a foundation of collective ownership which, to a certain extent, facilitated its establishment, because the effacement of the individual within a group prepared him to allow himself to be absorbed. Baudin argued that the higher ranking Incas tried, and succeeded to an extent, to force a degree of uniformity on the common Inca. The Inca were forced to dress similarly, eat the same food, practice the same religion, and speak the same language, Quechua.

World Without Men Charles Eric Maine Martino Fine Books, tp, 2012-01-03
2012 Reprint of 1958 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The blurb on the thirty-five cent Ace paperback likens Charles Eric Maine's 1958 novel "World Without Men" to George Orwell's "1984" and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World." Ordinarily one would regard such a comparison skeptically. Nevertheless, while not rising to the artistic level of the Orwell and Huxley masterpieces, "World Without Men" merits being rescued from the large catalogue of 1950s paperback throwaways. Maine's bases his vision of an ideological dystopia not on criticism of socialism or communism per se, nor of technocracy per se, but rather of feminism. Maine saw in the nascent feminism of his day (the immediate postwar period) a dehumanizing and destructive force, tending towards totalitarianism, which had the potential to deform society in radical, unnatural ways. Maine believed that feminism, as he understood it, derived its fundamental premises from hatred of, not respect for, the natural order. He also believed that feminism entailed a rebellion against sexual dimorphism.**

Years of research studying the world's major religions convinced him that some great Power lay behind all spiritual life and that this power is within each of us. Dr. Murphy was Minister-Director of the Church of Divine Science in Los Angeles for 28 years, where his lectures were attended by 1300 to 1500 people every Sunday. His daily radio program during period was immensely popular. Murphy was influenced by Ernest Holmes and Emmet Fox, both well known writers on New Thought principles, but his academic background was in Eastern religion. He spent many years in India, and was an Andhra Research Fellow at the University of India. Dr Murphy spent a good part of his life studying Eastern religions, and was a scholar of the I-Ching, the Chinese book of divination whose origins are lost in history. He remains a beacon of enlightenment and inspiration for legions of loyal followers. The Power of Your Subconscious Mind has been a bestseller since its first publication in 1963, selling many millions of copies since its original publication. **

lgli/W. Ross Ashby - An Introduction to Cybernetics (2015, Martino Fine Books).mobi
An Introduction to Cybernetics W. Ross Ashby Martino Fine Books, Mansfield Centre, CT, 2015
"Cybernetics offers the hope of providing effective methods for the study, and control, of systems that are intrinsically extremely complex. It will do this by first marking out what is achievable (for probably many of the investiagions of the past attempted the impossible), and then providing generalised strategies, of demonstable value, that can be used uniformly in a variety of special cases. In this way it offers the hope of providing the essential methods by which to attack the ils--psychological, social, economic--which at present are defeating us by their instrinsic complexity."--Chapter 1, pages 6-7

lgli/Elmer Keith - Sixguns by Keith (2012, Martino Fine Books).pdf
Sixguns by Keith: The Standard Reference Work [Illustrated Edition] Elmer Keith Martino Fine Books, Mansfield Centre, CT, 2012, ©1955
2012 Reprint of 1955 Edition. Profusely illustrated. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software.Keith was born in Missouri in 1899. His family moved to Montana six years later, where he grew up around former outlaws, lawmen, buffalo hunters, and Indian fighters as his life spanned the time from the Civil War veterans and gunfighters of the Frontier to the more modern age of hand guns. His teachers had survived the bloodiest war in our nation's history and had seen the great herds of buffaloes and the cow towns that helped build the West. Keith's writings had great influence on firearms in general and especially on single action six guns. Keith's knowledge of every facet of handguns in general and six shooters in particular is truly remarkable. He covers it all, from history to game shooting to gun fighting and much more. Although this book was written before the advent of the .44 Magnum, Mr. Keith's knowledge and experience are invaluable, with his game shooting and long range abilities most impressive of all. Keith also covers slip shooting with the Colt SAA, a fascinating and surprisingly effective technique generally ignored by modern writers. But most importantly, Elmer's honesty and integrity are his greatest attributes to those who knew him. If you love good old six shooters, you must have this book. This title remains an important and classic work on the subject. Table of contents: Dedication Preface Introduction Chapter I History of the Sixgun Chapter II Selecting the Handgun Chapter III Learning to Shoot Chapter IV Sixgun Sights Chapter V Long Range Shooting Chapter VI Game Shooting Chapter VII Double Action Shooting Chapter VIII Gun Rigs and Holsters Chapter IX Quick Draw and Hip Shooting Chapter X Gun Fighting Chapter XI Revolvers Versus Auto Pistols Chapter XII Aerial and Trick Shooting Chapter XIII Slip Shooting, Fanning, Calvalry Guns Chapter XIV Loading and Management of Cap and Ball Sixguns Chapter XV Repairs, Remodeling, Resighting Chapter XVI A Bullet Chapter Chapter XVII Cartridge Reloading Chapter XVIII Selection of Gun Cartridges Chapter XIX Ornamentation Chapter XX Care and Cleaning

Diari dell'occupazione Raja Shehadeh; Claudia De Martino Castelvecchi, edigita, [N.p.], 2014

lgli/Karl R. Popper [Popper, Karl R.] - The Logic of Scientific Discovery (2014, Martino Fine Books).pdf
The Logic of Scientific Discovery Popper, Karl R. Martino Fine Books, Mansfield Centre, CT, 2014
2014 Reprint of Original 1959 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This book by one of the world's foremost philosophers of science presented a striking new picture of the logical character of scientific discovery--a picture which does full justice to the liberating effect of the Einsteinian revolution in physics and its immense impact upon scientific thought in general. For this new English edition Dr. Popper did his own translation and has written 150 pages of entirely new text. Ernest Nagel considered this work "a first rate contribution to the logic of scientific method. The book contains a very interesting chapter on quantum mechanics, which performs one of the few sensible analyses of the Indeterminacy Principle which I have seen in print... The book is highly stimulating and contains much that is bed-rock for future work."--From the Dusk Jacket. **
