American encounters : the simple pleasures of still life ; [in conjunction with the exhibition 'New Frontier IV. Fastes et fragments. Aux origines de la nature morte américaine' at the Musée de Louvre from February 5 to April 28, 2015, and 'American Encounters: The simple pleasures of still life' at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art from May 16 to September 9, 2015, and the High Museum of Art from September 26, 2015, to January 31, 2016
Stephanie Mayer Heydt; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; High Museum of Art; Musée du Louvre; Terra Foundation for American Art
High Museum of Art ; distributed by the University of Washington Press, Atlanta, Georgia, Seattle, Washington, 2015
Still life celebrates the commonplace. But in these simple objects we invest meaning meaning that can be culturally specific but also universal. From the seventeenth century onward in Europe, a shared visual language developed around the practice of still life painting. In early nineteenth century America, artists adapted established formats to suit new circumstances. Drawing examples from three American and one French museum, this catalogue traces the development of American still life painting and its European precedents. American Enounters: The Simple Pleasures of Still Life is the final installment of the series, a collaborative project between Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Musée du Louvre, the High Museum of Art, and the Terra Foundation for American Art investigating four key genres in nineteenth century American art: landscape, genre, portraiture, and still life. -- Amazon.com

lgli/Annette Gordon-Reed - Andrew Johnson (Henry Holt and Co.).epub
Andrew Johnson: The American Presidents Series: The 17th President, 1865-1869 (The American Presidents)
Gordon-Reed, Annette;Johnson, Andrew
Times Books;Henry Holt and Company, American presidents series (Times Books (Firm)), First edition, New York, NY, 2011
<p class="null1">A Pulitzer Prize-winning historian recounts the tale of the unwanted president who ran afoul of Congress over Reconstruction and was nearly removed from office</p> <p>Andrew Johnson never expected to be president. But just six weeks after becoming Abraham Lincoln's vice president, the events at Ford's Theatre thrust him into the nation's highest office.</p> <p>Johnson faced a nearly impossible task—to succeed America's greatest chief executive, to bind the nation's wounds after the Civil War, and to work with a Congress controlled by the so-called Radical Republicans. Annette Gordon-Reed, one of America's leading historians of slavery, shows how ill-suited Johnson was for this daunting task. His vision of reconciliation abandoned the millions of former slaves (for whom he felt undisguised contempt) and antagonized congressional leaders, who tried to limit his powers and eventually impeached him.</p> <p>The climax of Johnson's presidency was his trial in the Senate and his acquittal by a single vote, which Gordon-Reed recounts with drama and palpable tension. Despite his victory, Johnson's term in office was a crucial missed opportunity; he failed the country at a pivotal moment, leaving America with problems that we are still trying to solve.</p>

Quabbin Valley, Massachusetts: People and Places (Images of America Series)
Elizabeth Peirce
Arcadia Publishing, Images of America, Charleston, SC, ©2006
<p>When the population of Boston exploded in the late 1800s, the critical need to expand the public water supply was realized. In response to this, all eyes focused northward to the Quabbin Valley, with its many ponds, lakes, and streams. To harness this source of water, the towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott were flooded and destroyed. Residents, buildings, and 7,500 bodies buried in cemeteries were removed. By 1938, there was no longer any evidence of human habitation in the area. Through vintage photographs, Quabbin Valley People and Places shares the stories of how these people lived, worked, and played from 1750 to 1938.</p>

Strange Fruit, Volume II: More Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History (2)
words and pictures by Joel Christian Gill; foreword by Dr. Regina N. Bradley
Chicago Review Press - Fulcrum, Independent Publishers Group, Golden, CO, 2018
Like all legends, people fade away, but not before leaving an incredible legacy. Strange Fruit, Volume II: More Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History is a collection of stories from early African American history that represent the oddity of success in the face of great adversity. Each of the eight illustrated chapters chronicles an uncelebrated African American hero or event. Joel Christian Gill offers historical and cultural commentary on heroes whose stories are not often found in history books, such as Cathay Williams, the only known female Buffalo Soldier, and Eugene Bullard, a fighter pilot who flew for France during World War I. These beautifully illustrated stories offer a refreshing look at remarkable African Americans. The stories included in Volume II are: Jourdan Anderson who requested payment from his former slave owner; Stagecoach Mary Fields, the first African-American female star route mail carrier; Willie Kennard, the Sheriff of the Colorado gold mining town of Yankee Hill; Cathay Williams, the only known female Buffalo Soldier; Blind Tom Wiggins, an autistic musical prodigy; Millie and Christine McCoy, conjoined twins known as'The Two-Headed Nightingale'; Victor Green, the creator and publisher of'The Green Book for the Negro Motorist'; and Eugene Bullard, a fighter pilot who flew for France during WWI.

Student Affairs for Academic Administrators
T. Lynn Hogan; American College Personnel Association
Stylus Publishing, LLC, ACPA Books Co-Published with Stylus Publishing Ser., 1, 2016
Co-published with ACPA, College Student Educators International In these days when every college or university needs to make the best use of resources, Student Affairs for Academic Administrators is intended to help academic administrators make the best use of one vital campus resource: student affairs. By providing this concise introduction to student affairs as a discipline and a profession, the authors of this volume provide a foundation for working together to improve the student experience and enhance learning. Since academic administrators typically come up through the faculty ranks, they are unlikely to have a good grasp of what their student affairs colleagues bring to the common work of education. To provide a better understanding, the chapters in this volume cover topics such as: -The history of student affairs, and functions typically associated with student affairs divisions; -Current thinking and research in student development theory; -Theoretical constructs underlying contemporary student affairs practice (and ways to employ these theories in academic administration); -Diversity issues and their impact on student outcomes in the collegiate environment. After a chapter on how to build successful collaborations between academic affairs and student affairs, two final chapters explore specific examples of how such collaborations work in practice: Academic honor codes, and undergraduate research. While written for academic administrators, the book also provides valuable insights for those in student affairs seeking to improve understanding and facilitate collaboration with colleagues in academic affairs.

Spaces of Conflict, Sounds of Solidarity: Music, Race, and Spatial Entitlement in Los Angeles (Volume 36)
Bass, Charlotta A;Moreno, Luisa;Johnson, Gaye Theresa
University of California Press, American crossroads 36, 2013
Luisa Moreno, Charlotta Bass, and the constellations of interethnic working-class radicalism -- Spatial entitlement : race, displacement, and sonic reclamation in postwar Los Angeles -- Cold wars and counter war(s) : coalitional politics in an age of violence -- "Teeth-gritting harmony" : punk, hip-hop, and sonic spatial politics -- Space, sound, and shared struggles.;In Spaces of Conflict, Sounds of Solidarity, Gaye Theresa Johnson examines interracial anti-racist alliances, divisions among aggrieved minority communities, and the cultural expressions and spatial politics that emerge from the mutual struggles of Blacks and Chicanos in Los Angeles from the 1940s to the present. Johnson argues that struggles waged in response to institutional and social repression have created both moments and movements in which Blacks and Chicanos have unmasked power imbalances, sought recognition, and forged solidarities by embracing the strategies, cultures, and politics of each others' experiences. At the center of this study is the theory of spatial entitlement: the spatial strategies and vernaculars utilized by working class youth to resist the demarcations of race and class that emerged in the postwar era. In this important new book, Johnson reveals how racial alliances and antagonisms between Blacks and Chicanos in L.A. had spatial as well as racial dimensions. Gaye Theresa Johnson is Associate Professor of Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Publisher's note.

February House : The Story of W. H. Auden, Carson McCullers, Jane and Paul Bowles, Benjamin Britten, and Gypsy Rose Lee, Under One Roof in Brooklyn
Auden, Wystan Hugh;Bowles, Jane;Bowles, Paul;Britten, Benjamin;Lee, Gypsy Rose;McCullers, Carson;Tippins, Sherill
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Trade & Reference Publishers, 1st Mariner Books ed., Boston, Massachusetts, 2006
An “irresistible” account of a little-known literary salon and creative commune in 1940s Brooklyn ( The Washington Post Book World ). A San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of the Year February House is the true story of an extraordinary experiment in communal living, one involving young but already iconic writers—and America’s best-known burlesque performer—in a house at 7 Middagh Street in Brooklyn. It was a fevered yearlong party, fueled by the appetites of youth and a shared sense of urgency to take action as artists in the months before the country entered World War II. In spite of the sheer intensity of life at 7 Middagh, the house was for its residents a creative crucible. Carson McCullers’s two masterpieces, The Member of the Wedding and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe , were born, bibulously, in Brooklyn. Gypsy Rose Lee, workmanlike by day, party girl by night, wrote her book The G-String Murders in her Middagh Street bedroom. W. H. Auden—who, along with Benjamin Britten, was being excoriated back in England for absenting himself from the war—presided over the house like a peevish auntie, collecting rent money and dispensing romantic advice. And yet all the while, he was composing some of the most important work of his career. Enlivened by primary sources and an unforgettable story, this tale of daily life at the most fertile and improbable live-in salon of the twentieth century comes from the acclaimed author of Inside the Dream Palace: The Life and Times of New York’s Legendary Chelsea Hotel . “Brimming with information . . . The personalities she depicts [are] indelibly drawn.” — Los Angeles Times Book Review “Magnificent . . . Not to mention funny and raunchy.” — The Seattle Times

The Ritual Of New Creation: Jewish Tradition And Contemporary Literature (suny Series In Modern Jewish Literature And Culture)
Finkelstein, Norman , 1954-
State University Of New York Press, State University of New York Press, Albany, 1992
Finkelstein examines a wide range of recent Jewish writing, including poetry, fiction, and literary criticism, in order to determine the changes such writing has undergone in its exposure to modern and postmodern conditions of culture. Featuring discussions of such figures as Gershom Scholem, Harold Bloom, George Steiner, Cynthia Ozick, and John Hollander, The Ritual of New Creation explores certain themes that recur in modern Jewish literature: the relation of the sacred to the secular in Jewish writing; the role of loss and exile; “wandering meaning” and textual transformation. This is a book for all readers interested in modern Jewish literature, but especially for readers concerned with literary theory, the relations of text and commentary, and the fate of literary traditions in the contemporary and postmodern cultural milieu. <div class="bookitem
