Creating a Place for Adult Learners in Higher Education : Challenges and Opportunities Amy D. Rose;Jovita M. Ross-Gordon;Carol E. Kasworm; & Jovita M. Ross-Gordon & Carol E. Kasworm Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), 1, 2023
Creating a Place for Adult Learners in Higher Education offers deep insights into how to attract, teach, support, and retain students over the age of 25 – an important yet often overlooked student group. Comprehensive in scope, this book covers all the main aspects of adult students’ relationships with higher education institutions: recruitment, admissions, and financing; course and program provision and teaching approaches; and student support, retention, and completion. The discussion is bolstered by chapters of analysis on adult student demographics (including both diversities and commonalities), exploration of leadership challenges, and discussion of measurements of success. Drawing from the most up-to-date research as well as practical experience and descriptions of best practices by programs historically serving adults, the authors provide a broad set of strategies and recommendations to place adult students at the center of the educational process. Higher education leaders, practitioners, and administrators will find this book an invaluable resource as they seek to better account for and support this key student group, which now comprises approximately 30% of the US undergraduate population.

Assessing Adult Learning in Diverse Settings: Current Issues and Approaches: New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education (J-B ACE Single Issue ... Adult & Continuing Education) Amy D. Rose, Meredyth A. Leahy, editors Jossey-Bass, Incorporated Publishers, Jossey-bass higher and adult education series, New directions for adult and continuing education -- no. 75, fall 1997, New directions for adult and continuing education -- no. 75., San Francisco, California, 1997

In this era of increased accountability, assessment of educational achievement has taken on great urgency. This is particularly true within adult continuing education, where assessment results can directly affect a program's existence. This volume presents an overview of some of the general assessment trends within the field. The purpose of this volume is to examine assessment approaches analytically from a variety of programatic levels and to look at the implications of these differing approaches. Assessment issues are presented from several perspectives, including the ways in which different assessment techniques accredit adults' prior learning, the concerns that are raised about assessment in specific program areas such as adult basic education and workplace learning, and the importance of self-reflection and self-assessment. The individual chapters go beyond mechanistic issues of measurement to discuss the implications of cultural differences as well as differing ideas about knowledge and knowing and the implications these ideas can have for both the participant and the program. This volume should be of use to anyone concerned with how assessment issues have come to permeate the field of adult continuing education. This is the 75th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. For more information on the series, please see the journals and periodicals page.

How to Catch a Devilish Duke: The Disreputable Debutantes Book 4 Bennett, Amy Rose Amy Rose Bennett Books, Place of publication not identified, 2020
In this fourth installment of the Disreputable Debutantes series, the spirited daughter of an earl is in imminent danger of ruining her reputation forevermore. Lady Charlotte Hastings--already branded a hellion by polite society--is in a terrible scrape courtesy of London's most notorious blackguard. One thing is certain: her name cannot appear in the gossip rags ... again. However, Charlie's bold attempt to extricate herself from the fine pickle she's in takes an unexpected turn when the devilishly handsome Maximilian, the Duke of Exmoor--the rakehell she's secretly loved for years--comes to her aid. Upon discovering the irrepressible Lady Charlotte--his best friend's younger sister--is in danger, Max Devereux feels duty bound to offer assistance. Only he soon realizes he's also mired in deep trouble when an entirely inconvenient desire for Charlie sparks to life. If that's not enough to contend with, Max's manipulative mother is busily engineering his betrothal to a perfectly polished debutante. A hardened rake with an armor-plated heart, Max has absolutely no intention of becoming leg-shackled to anyone. At least not this Season. When unforeseen disaster strikes plunging both Charlie and Max headlong into a new public scandal, Max proposes a deal: to restore Charlie's good name and to help Max avoid his mother's machinations, they'll enter a temporary engagement-of-convenience. But even the best laid plans can go awry. As passion flares between Max and Charlie, their arrangement doesn't seem like make-believe anymore ... and hidden enemies intent on ruining Charlie once and for all, are waiting in the wings. Will a happily-ever-after ever be within their reach?

If a Tree Falls : A Family's Quest to Hear and Be Heard by Jennifer Rosner The Feminist Press at CUNY, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., New York, 2010
A revealing memoir of a family and a “wrenching journey into deafness from the standpoint of a mother, a wife, a daughter, a philosopher, and a Jew” (Ilan Stavans, author of On Borrowed Words: A Memoir of Language). When her daughters were born deaf, Jennifer Rosner was stunned. Then she discovered a hidden history of deafness in her family, going back generations to the Jewish enclaves of Eastern Europe. Traveling back in time in her mind, she imagined her silent relatives, who showed surprising creativity in dealing with a world that preferred to ignore them. Here, in a “gentle meditation on sound and silence, love and family” Rosner shares her journey into the modern world of deafness, and the controversial decisions she and her husband made about hearing aids, cochlear implants and sign language (Publishers Weekly). Punctuated by memories of being unheard, Rosner's imaginative odyssey of dealing with her daughters'deafness is at its heart a story of whether she—a mother with perfect hearing—can ever truly hear her children.

The Georgetown Companion to Interreligious Studies provides fifty thought-provoking chapters on the field's unique history, priorities, challenges, pedagogies, and practical applications, written by an international roster of experts and practitioners across religious traditions. This will serve as a valuable reference to students in the field. | A comprehensive collection provides guidance and deep insight from a variety of experts in this emerging field The rapidly developing field of interreligious studies fosters scholarship engaging two or more religious traditions at a time. Inherently multidisciplinary, the field brings the academic consideration of religions into conversation with the humanities and social sciences, employing relational, intersectional, experiential, and dialogical methodologies as it examines the interrelationship of individuals and groups with differing alignments toward religion. Edited by Lucinda Mosher, The Georgetown Companion to Interreligious Studies features an international roster of practitioners of or experts on Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Ruism, Humanism, and African, North American, and South American Indigenous lifeways. Each author offers a unique perspective on the nature of this emerging discipline. This companion provides fifty thought-provoking chapters on the history, priorities, challenges, distinguishing pedagogies, and practical applications of interreligious studies. Anyone who seeks a deeper appreciation of this relatively new academic field will find it useful as a textbook or research resource.
