Arthur Hugh Clough: The Critical Heritage Michael Thorpe (Editor) Routledge, The Critical Heritage, 01, 2002
The main text of this volume consists of sixty-one essays, reviews and extracts from books and letters which have been selected with the object of giving a fair impression of the contemporary and near-contemporary response to the work of Arthur Hugh Clough. The period covered by the pieces I have chosen is 1848, the year in which The Bothie of Tober-na-Vuolich appeared, to 1920. The terminal date was not easy to decide. Clough died early, in 1861, leaving much of his best work unpublished. In 1862 two selections appeared: The Poems of Arthur Hugh Clough, edited by his friend C.E.Norton and published in Boston, and in England Poems by Arthur Hugh Clough, with a Memoir by F.T.Palgrave. The contents of these were very similar and both excluded many readily available poems. Though a few new items were added by Palgrave to the second edition of his selection in 1863, the important poems ‘Easter Day’ and Dipsychus were not allowed in print by the reluctant Mrs Clough until 1865, and then only in a small edition, Letters and Remains of Arthur Hugh Clough, ‘for private circulation only’. Mere fragments from Dipsychus had been included in the previous volumes.Mrs Clough’s fear that the poem was ‘too unfinished’ and liable to mislead readers as to her husband’s true beliefs still led her to censor it severely, both in 1865 and again in 1869, when The Poems and Prose Remains of Arthur Hugh Clough, with a Selection from his Letters was at last allowed to brave the public eye. Mrs Clough herself provided a Memoir for this, having also edited it with the doubtless indispensable aid of John Addington Symonds. Not before 1869, then, was a fairly substantial edition of Clough’s poetry generally accessible.

Arthur Hugh Clough Paul Veyriras 1964
This is a very comprehensive biography of Clough, published by Didier, Paris, in 1964. It is over 600 pages and was written as a thesis. It quotes extensively in English, with translations. This study can stand alongside Emile Legouis' much earlier study of Wordsworth (1896; translated and published in English in 1897) as an example of French scholarship of English literature.

Plutarch's Lives, Volume 2 (Modern Library Classics) Plutarch; Tony Podlecki; Arthur Hugh Clough Bantam, Βίοι Παράλληλοι, 2, 2011
Plutarch's Lives, written at the beginning of the second century A.D., is a brilliant social history of the ancient world by one of the greatest biographers and moralists of all time. In what is by far his most famous and influential work, Plutarch reveals the character and personality of his subjects and how they led ultimately to tragedy or victory. Richly anecdotal and full of detail, Volume I contains profiles and comparisons of Romulus and Theseus, Numa and Lycurgus, Fabius and Pericles, and many more powerful figures of ancient Greece and Rome. The present translation, originally published in 1683 in conjunction with a life of Plutarch by John Dryden, was revised in 1864 by the poet and scholar Arthur Hugh Clough, whose notes and preface are also included in this edition. __From the Trade Paperback edition.__

Arthur Hugh Clough : the growth of a poet's mind Evelyn Barish Greenberger, Evelyn Barish Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Reprint 2014, 1970 jan 31

Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861), poet, skeptic, friend of Emerson and of Matthew Arnold, was a man concerned with the religious, political, and social issues of the turbulent times in which he lived. In this fresh examination of Clough, Greenberger traces the intellectual development of a poet who was considered a brilliant failure in his own day, a reputation that still persists despite the fact that Clough is now attracting considerable critical attention. Her study contradicts this traditional view of him as ineffectual and uncommitted and reveals instead a complex figure whose varied interests enriched his prose and poetry.

Greenberger has made a thorough study of all of Clough's prose on contemporary issues written between 1837 and 1853. These largely neglected writings, many of which remain unpublished, enable her to follow the poet's development through religious doubts and conflicts and to trace his political metamorphosis from naive idealism through radicalism to a final disenchantment with utopias. Having placed the poet's work in its proper historical context, the author goes on to reveal the great extent to which Clough succeeded in making the issues of his day viable subjects for poetry.

Greenberger, thoroughly versed in the intellectual history of the Victorian period, vividly depicts the English social and economic scene and contemporary life at unreformed Oxford. She suggests new insights into Clough's relations with Emerson, the influence of Carlyle upon the poet, and his reactions to the America of the early 1850's.

The author concludes that the techniques Clough developed for presenting his ideas in poetic form and the concerns that pervaded his thinking make him a precursor of twentieth-century literature. In the last chapter she relates her findings to Clough's three major poems. She includes in an appendix a number of new poems and other material by Clough found in manuscript during her research.

Plutarch's Lives - 01 The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans, Volume I: Plutarch & Arthur Hugh Clough & John Dryden Modern Library, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 1992
Review"A Bible for heroes."From the Trade Paperback edition.Product DescriptionPlutarch's 'Parallel Lives,' written at the beginning of the second century A.D., form a brilliant social history of the ancient world. They were originally presented in a series of books that gave an account of one Greek and one Roman life, followed by a comparison of the two: Theseus and Romulus, Alcibiades and Coriolanus, Demosthenes and Cicero, Demetrius and Antony. Plutarch was interested in the personalities of his subjects and on the way their characters molded their actions, leading them to tragedy or victory. He was a moralist of the highest order. 'It was for the sake of others that I first commenced writing biographies,' he says, 'but I find myself proceeding and attaching myself to it for my own; the virtues of these great men serving me as a sort of looking-glass, in which I may see how to adjust and adorn my own life.'
