Fostering Local Eucharistic Communities A Biblical, Historical, and Theological Reflection Inspired by Missionary Service in Albania Nathan Hoppe Aschendorff Verlag GmbH & Co. KG, Studia Oecomenica Friburgensia, 110, 2023

This study argues that the local eucharistic community (LEC) is an essential unit of life in the Orthodox Church. The LEC is understood as the community of people who are bound together by weekly participation in the Divine Eucharist around the same altar, in which they are united to Christ and one another, and who choose to live in deep intentional community, growing in the life of Christ together, caring for one another, and witnessing to the world. The author presents a framework for the study and nurture of LECs based on eight attributes, which are: eucharistic life, community life, Christian formation, stewardship, governance, evangelism, philanthropy, and cultural incarnation.To gain a deeper understanding of LECs, their life is studied in the first century with some attention to the trajectory of their later development. Field research in the United States provides contemporary experience to supplement the understanding of healthy LECs. This research is supplemented by study of eucharistic ecclesiology, Orthodox missiology, and the Church Growth Movement to better understand how LECs should function and thrive in the twenty-first century. The new model of ministry presents a vision of healthy LECs as it has been developed in Albania and a practical plan for sharing this vision in other ecclesial contexts in the twenty-first century.

At the outbreak of the Reformations, the need for stable and authoritative support was acutely felt on all sides, engaged as they were in a conflict of interpretations of the core of Christianity. Patristic anthologies were the perfect tool for the roles of polemical weapons and doctrinal handbooks, as they selected apt passages from the Fathers of the Church to prove, explain and promote the articles of the new confessions of faith and testify to antiquity. In a paradigm dominated by the figure of Augustine, whose exegesis of Scripture and understanding of the Gospel was very important for many Reformers, these anthologies tried to demonstrate the broad consensus of the majority of the ancient writers with the doctrines advocated by them. This volume offers an original perspective on the reception of Origen of Alexandria, one of the most profound and influential philosophers and exegetes of Late Antiquity, in three patristic anthologies of the 16th century. It explores how the voice of Origen, who was recognized by Luther and Melanchthon as a staunch opponent of their doctrines, is harmonized with the theological stances of the anthologies. The anomaly represented by the proposed image of a “Protestant Origen” helps us to decipher larger trends of the European Reformations, in their relationship with authority and memory. The Christian literary culture of Georgia was always associated with the main monastic centres of the Byzantine world and neighbouring Christian areas. Georgians gained a foothold in the religious and cultural milieu of the Christian world by establishing their own monasteries, or by settling and working in prominent mona- stic centres of the Christian Middle East and Byzantium. They under- took large-scale cultural and educational projects, such as translating the most significant works of Christian literature, creating original Georgian ecclesiastical writings, and producing precious manuscripts. Georgians’ literary activity in foreign monastic hubs reflects their close contact with advanced intellectual centres and, at the same time, their attempt to maintain ecclesiastical and cultural independence. This book presents to readers in a coherent, chronological manner Georgian ecclesiastics’ literary work and Georgian manuscript produc- tion in the monastic centres of Palestine, Mt Sinai, Mt Athos, the Black Mountain (near Antioch), Constantinople, and Petritsoni (Bachkovo). It aims to show how Georgians adopted the ideas and values that were predominant in the advanced literary and cultural centres of the Christian world, and how they introduced these ideas and values into Georgian national literature, converting them into an essential part of the Georgian intellectual heritage. How do liturgies fashion and communicate theology? With the Ecclesiastic Rite of Constantinople—once celebrated not only in the city’s Great Church (Hagia Sophia) but in churches throughout the Byzantine world—as evidence, this study demonstrates that hymnography offers one avenue by which to approach this question and, thus, one of the most important points of direct access to liturgical theology. The volume presents, firstly, a comparative edition of the corpus of Greek hymns found in the oldest witnesses to this Middle Byzantine “cathedral” or “asmatic” patriarchal liturgical tradition, together with an English translation. It situates the hymns in their historical and liturgical contexts and reassesses the relationship between the earliest manuscript sources. Secondly, it offers a commentary on twenty exemplary troparia for the highest feasts of the liturgical year, setting them within a heortological, ritual, and literary frame of reference. The systematic analysis of the living hymn texts shows that they are part of an ancient Christian textual world fundamentally characterised by diverse receptions of biblical texts and themes. This work closes a gap in research in historical and theological liturgical studies and Byzantine literary history, renders accessible an important but hitherto neglected corpus of Greek Christian hymns, and lays the textual ground for numerous future studies. La Liturgie de saint Marc, une très ancienne liturgie proprement égyptienne, présente des caractéristiques qui la distinguent nettement des autres anaphores, en particulier la présence des intercessions avant le récit de l’institution, ainsi que la prière pour la crue des eaux du Nil. Quoiqu’elle ne soit plus guère en usage de nos jours, elle existe toujours chez les Coptes sous le nom de Liturgie de saint Cyrille. Son histoire est difficile à reconstituer, vu le petit nombre de manuscrits anciens et l’état incomplet de certains d’entre eux ; le texte du Sinaï arabe 237, publié ici avec traduction annotée et un essai de reconstitution du modèle grec, atteste que cette liturgie a été également célébrée dans le cadre du patriarcat de Jérusalem sous une forme adaptée à l’usage byzantin, avec l’addition d’une « proscomidie », la mention de l’empereur et de la « Ville sainte ». A detailed analysis of the origins of this terminology in the writings of Joseph Kleutgen, a nineteenth century neo-scholastic theologian, provides the historical and theological context for understanding its intended sense in the documents of Pope Pius IX and the First Vatican Council. The main lines of historical development are then traced from the end of the First Vatican Council up through the teaching of the Second Vatican Council with special attention given to the question of an ordinary magisterium of the pope and to the extension of the extraordinary magisterium to the secondary object of the magisterium and to the confirmation or re-affirmation of doctrines already infallibly taught by the Church. This latter question has serious implications for the interpretation of doctrinal declarations such as those found in Evangelium vitae, Ordinatio sacerdotalis, and several of the documents of Vatican II. The study concludes by considering the approach to these questions taken by the Second Vatican Council in the constitution on the Church Lumen gentium.

<p>All Americans should welcome the opportunity to move forward into a better future for America and for all Americans while mending ancient wounds from the nations original sin and at the same time seek to remediate the lingering ills and inflicted hardships still present to this day that divides the nation's people such that some Americans still feel relegated to second class citizenship. Courageous people of all faiths, of goodwill, and of conscience can impart heartfelt support for a new emancipation that moves toward freeing both black and white Americans from the racial disharmony and acrimony that surrounds the issue of racial discrimination in America. It is now possible to seek a new direction that promotes self-reliance and economic progress from within the black community by redirecting black earned resources through black individuals not through the endless, ineffective government programs and bureaucracies. It has been more than half a century since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed the racial discrimination and segregation that persists to this day, and the government has clearly failed to abate such daily pathologies. Government poverty and affirmative action programs have not reduced the racial wealth gap that remains virtually unchanged since 1964. The black middle class suffers from consistently higher unemployment rates while also being burdened with increasing high student loan debt and home mortgage debt that reduces the opportunity for home ownership and family net worth growth. President John F. Kennedy in a 1961 speech repeated the time-worn saying that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. This book suggests a new direction of self-reliance and hope with a new emancipation proclaimed for all Americans, if only there is finally the will to put the nation's dark past behind us and move out of the shadows and into the sunlight of a just and moral new future.</p>

Die säkularisierten westlichen Gesellschaften wurden auf dem Balkan, im Kaukasus sowie im Nahen und Mittleren Osten seit den 1990er Jahren abrupt mit totgeglaubten Phänomenen von Konfessions- und Religionskriegen konfrontiert. Auch in Europa war Kriegserfahrung von zahlreichen Akteuren und Akteursgruppen lange als religiöse Erfahrung gedeutet worden. Die Semantik und die Symbolsprache des Krieges blieben bis in die jüngste Zeit hinein intensiv mit religiösen Metaphern durchsetzt. Bis an die Schwelle der Moderne gab es im Spannungsfeld von Religion und Krieg in der christlichen Welt zwei Kategorien von kriegerischer Gewalt und damit zwei Typen von Religionskriegen: den konfessionellen Bürgerkrieg oder Staatenkrieg zwischen Anhängern unterschiedlicher christlicher Bekenntnisse und den genuinen Religionskrieg gegen Nichtchristen an den Außengrenzen der Christenheit. Selbst wenn die Formen der Kriegsführung sich oft an Grausamkeit, Brutalität und verheerender Gewalt nicht nachstanden, so waren die Kriegslegitimationen, die diplomatischen Wege aus dem Krieg, die Friedensschlüsse und das bei Kriegsbeendigung neu konstituierte Völkerrecht doch verschieden. Die Aufsätze des vorliegenden Sammelbandes versuchen, durch eine vergleichende Betrachtung zu einer Phänomenologie und Typologie der Beziehungen von Konfession und Krieg im Alten Reich und in Alteuropa zu gelangen. Zugrunde liegt eine Tagung, die der Sonderforschungsbereich 437 'Kriegserfahrungen - Krieg und Gesellschaft in der Neuzeit' an der Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen im Jahre 2004 durchführte. A detailed analysis of the origins of this terminology in the writings of Joseph Kleutgen, a nineteenth century neo-scholastic theologian, provides the historical and theological context for understanding its intended sense in the documents of Pope Pius IX and the First Vatican Council. The main lines of historical development are then traced from the end of the First Vatican Council up through the teaching of the Second Vatican Council with special attention given to the question of an ordinary magisterium of the pope and to the extension of the extraordinary magisterium to the secondary object of the magisterium and to the confirmation or re-affirmation of doctrines already infallibly taught by the Church. This latter question has serious implications for the interpretation of doctrinal declarations such as those found in Evangelium vitae, Ordinatio sacerdotalis, and several of the documents of Vatican II. The study concludes by considering the approach to these questions taken by the Second Vatican Council in the constitution on the Church Lumen gentium.

Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert mit seinen Beiträgen einen weiteren Schritt in der Forschung zum Werk Alberts des Großen. Mit jedem Schritt im Fortgang der Edition seiner Werke und mit jeder Studie zu den gesicherten und aus ihren Quellen sichtbar gemachten Texten gewinnt die Bedeutung Alberts für die Entwicklung des mittelalterlichen Denkens an Tiefenschärfe. Wie wenige andere der großen Theologen und Philosophen hat sich Albert einer Scheidelinie gegenüber gesehen. Welchen Weg Albert in Antwort auf diese Herausforderung einschlägt – man könnte ihn die Via Alberti nennen – ist geradezu minutiös an seinen Werken ablesbar: Er besteht zum einen darin, das neue Gedankengut intensiv zu studieren. Zum anderen besteht sein Weg darin, die Auseinandersetzung mit den neuen Lehren zu suchen, sie nicht nur zu kommentieren und selektiv zum Bekannten hinzuzufügen, sondern sie kritisch einzuordnen und ihre inhaltlichen und formalen Strukturelemente für eine zu suchende neue wissenschaftliche Weltdeutung fruchtbar zu machen, einer Weltdeutung, die die problematischen Engführungen der rezipierten Weltsicht sprengt und zugleich deren wichtige Einsichten aufgreift und nutzt. These pages contain basic introductory presentations, followed by other studies of examples addressing liturgists and reputed liturgiologists, and the examination of some specific aspects concerning the concrete reception of the results of scholarly studies in liturgy. Since 1953, the Semaines d’études liturgiques organized at the Orthodox Theological Institute of Saint Serge in Paris bring together mainly Christian researchers. Participants are invited to examine together liturgical documents and observed practices, yesterday or today, by Christian communities, from an ecumenical perspective and with a scholarly approach.
