A line in the sand : Britain, France and the struggle for the mastery of the Middle East James Barr; Joseph A. O'Hare Fund Simon & Schuster UK Ltd., First Edition, 2012
In 1916, in the middle of the First World War, two men secretly agreed to divide the Middle East between them. Sir Mark Sykes was a visionary politician; Francois Georges-Picot a diplomat with a grudge. The deal they struck, which was designed to relieve tensions that threatened to engulf the Entente Cordiale, drew a line in the sand from the Mediterranean to the Persian frontier. Territory north of that stark line would go to France; land south of it, to Britain. Against the odds their pact survived the war to form the basis for the post-war division of the region into five new countries Britain and France would rule. The creation of Britain's 'mandates' of Palestine, Transjordan and Iraq, and France's in Lebanon and Syria, made the two powers uneasy neighbours for the following thirty years. Through a stellar cast of politicians, diplomats, spies and soldiers, including T. E. Lawrence, Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle, A Line in the Sand vividly tells the story of the short but crucial era when Britain and France ruled the Middle East. It explains exactly how the old antagonism between these two powers inflamed the more familiar modern rivalry between the Arabs and the Jews, and ultimately led to war between the British and the French in 1941 and between the Arabs and the Jews in 1948. In 1946, after many years of intrigue and espionage, Britain finally succeeded in ousting France from Lebanon and Syria, and hoped that, having done so, it would be able to cling on to Palestine. Using newly declassified papers from the British and French archives, James Barr brings this overlooked clandestine struggle back to life, and reveals, for the first time, the stunning way in which the French finally got their revenge.

0198269870.pdf Unbekannt OUP Oxford, 2009
The end of the millennium sees biblical study in a state of transition. The traditional position of historical approaches is widely questioned and `historical criticism'is regarded as passé. There is a search for approaches - literary or sociological - that are less tied to history. On the other hand there is a more radical approach to the history of Israel, that sees true history as distinct from the biblical narrative and dependent on sources other than the Bible. Biblical narratives thus express not the actual events but the ideological and religious aspirations of writers in much later times. `Ideology'has become one of the key words, but is used in very divergent ways. All this is linked with the intellectual movement known as post-modernism. Some connections between post-modernism and theology are suggested by Professor Barr in the final chapter. This book is important because it tries to bring together various threads of these different movements and to state a position from which we may advance into the new millennium.

History and Ideology in the Old Testament Barr, James Oxford University Press, USA, 2000
Focusing on the Old Testament and the history of Israel, this book brings together aspects of controversy about the Bible at the end of the millennium. Quatrefoil Barr, James Alyson Press, 1, 1950
From the 1950 first-edition dustjacket of this important novel in the history of gay literature:This is primarily the story of two young men, Philip Froelich and Tim Danelaw, who are irresistibly drawn to each other. Both are in every obvious respect what is generally termed masculine. There is no suggestion of the effeminate – nothing that could evoke the characterization of gay. Their backgrounds and personalities are thoroughly American, and they live and work in a completely normal man's social and professional world. Other men respect and admire their courage and ability and even their physical prowess. Women are very much attracted to both of them.Tim, the older the two, has already recognized and resolved the problem of his sexual deviation. Phillip has not. A product of rural American mores and attitudes, he has a fierce contempt for "queers" and at the same time a deep and secret dread that the germ of homosexuality maybe buried somewhere within himself. One or two incidences in his life have shaken him profoundly and have made him determined ruthlessly to crush any tendencies in himself as well as to avoid any close relations with other men. He is engaged to be married as soon as he is discharged from the Navy, and he intends to rear a big family, to take over the operations of his family's bank and other interests, and to become a responsible and civic-minded leader in his community. As the story opens, he has almost reached the refuge and security he has carefully planned. But then he meets Danelaw. From that moment the struggle begins – a tense and shattering emotional upheaval composed of aversion, self-contempt, admiration and – finally –love.QUATREFOIL is a deeply moral novel. Two men of integrity and intellect are confronted with the knowledge that they are deviants from the normal pattern of our society – that most people in that society would abhor and persecute them if they openly avowed their difference...

Bible and Interpretation: The Collected Essays of James Barr: Volume III: Linguistics and Translation (Bible Interpretation: The Collected Essays of James Barr) Barr, James; Barr, James; Barton, John; Nicholson, Ernest Oxford University Press, USA, Bible and interpretation, the collected essays of James Barr / ed. by John Barton. [Contributions by Ernest Nicholson] ; Vol. 3, 1. ed, Oxford, 2014
This is the third volume of a three volume collection which collates the most important published papers of James Barr (1924-2006). The papers deal with questions of theology (especially biblical theology), biblical interpretation and ideas about biblical inspiration and authority, and questions to do with biblical Hebrew and Greek, along with several lexicographical studies, essays and obituaries on major figures in the history of biblical interpretation, and a number of important reviews. Many of pieces collected here have hitherto been available only in journals and hard-to-access collections. This collection will prove indispensable for anyone seeking a rounded picture of Barr's work. It incorporates work from every period of his academic life, and includes a number of discussions of fundamentalism and conservative biblical interpretation. Some pieces also shed light on less well-known aspects of Barr's work, such as his abiding interest in biblical chronology. Barr's characteristic incisive, clear, and forthright style is apparent throughout the collection. The three volumes are thematically compiled. Each is accompanied by an introduction by John Barton, providing a guide to the contents. Volume 1 begins with a biographical essay by Ernest Nicholson and John Barton. It contains major articles on theology in relation to the Bible, programmatic studies of the past and future of biblical study, and reflections on specific topics in the study of the Old Testament. Volume 2 is concerned with detailed biblical interpretation and with the history of the discipline. It also contains material on biblical fundamentalism. Volume 3 is a collection of Barr's extensive papers on linguistic matters relating to Biblical Hebrew and Greek, and to biblical translation in the ancient and the modern world. Contents List

Lords of the Desert Britain's Struggle with America to Dominate the Middle East & A Line in the Sand Britain, France and the Struggle That Shaped the Middle East By James Barr 2 Books Collection Set James Barr Simon & Schuster Pb, London [etc, 2019
Guardian Book of the Day New Statesman Book of the Year History Today Book of the Year Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year BBC History Magazine Book of the Year 'Bustles impressively with detail and anecdote' --Sunday Times 'Consistently fascinating' --The Spectator 'Beautifully written and deeply researched' --The Observer 'Barr draws on a rich and varied trove of sources to knit a sequence of dramatic episodes into an elegant whole. Great events march through these pages' --Wall Street Journal Upon victory in 1945, Britain still dominated the Middle East. She directly ruled Palestine and Aden, was the kingmaker in Iran, the power behind the thrones of Egypt, Iraq and Jordan, and protected the sultan of Oman and the Gulf sheikhs. But her motives for wanting to dominate this crossroads between Europe, Asia and Africa were changing. Where 'imperial security' - control of the route to India - had once been paramount, now oil was an increasingly important factor. So, too, was prestige. Ironically, the very end of empire made control of the Middle East precious in itself: on it hung Britain's claim to be a great power. Unable to withstand Arab and Jewish nationalism, within a generation the British were gone. But that is not the full story. What ultimately sped Britain on her way was the uncompromising attitude of the United States, which was determined to displace the British in the Middle East. The British did not give in gracefully to this onslaught. Using newly declassified records and long-forgotten memoirs, including the diaries of a key British spy, James Barr tears up the conventional interpretation of this era in the Middle East, vividly portraying the tensions between London and Washington, and shedding an uncompromising light on the murkier activities of a generation of American and British diehards in the region, from the battle of El Alamein in 1942 to Britain's abandonment of Aden in 1967. Reminding us that the Middle East has always served as the arena for great power conflict, this is the tale of an internecine struggle in which Britain would discover that her most formidable rival was the ally she had assumed would be her closest friend. Reviews for A Line In The Sand:- 'Masterful' --The Spectator 'With superb research and telling quotations, Barr has skewered the whole shabby story' --The Times 'Lively and entertaining. He has scoured the diplomatic archives of the two powers and has come up with a rich haul that brings his narrative to life' --Financial Times

“Explores the dark corners of our city... set both pre- and post-Katrina... harrowing reading, to be sure, but it's pure page-turning pleasure, too.” —The Times-Picayune Residents of the Big Easy are proud of its unique history and character. Resourceful and resilient, they are survivors—of natural disasters, as well as everyday tragedies. For off the beaten path, where tourists never travel, is a city that revels in scandal, sin, and seduction. New Orleans Noir includes stories by Ace Atkins, Laura Lippman, Patty Friedmann, Barbara Hambly, Tim McLoughlin, Olympia Vernon, David Fulmer, Jervey Tervalon, James Nolan, Kalamu ya Salaam, Maureen Tan, Thomas Adcock, Jeri Cain Rossi, Christine Wiltz, Greg Herren, Julie Smith, Eric Overmyer, and Ted O'Brien. “A vivid series of impressions of the city in moments that brought out either the best or worst in people... a thrilling read and a harbinger of what should be an interesting stream of works.” —Gambit Weekly “When you've waded through these anguished pages, you can begin to understand why—as corrupt as it is, as broken as it is—so many of New Orleans's refugees still long to go home.” —Mystery Scene “Excellent... Appropriately, Smith divides the book into pre- and post-Katrina sections, and many of the more powerful tales describe the disaster's hellish aftermath.” —Publishers Weekly

James Barr and the Bible : critique of a new liberalism Paul Ronald Wells Presbyterian and reformed Publishing Company, Phillipsburg, N.J, New Jersey, 1980
Dr. Paul Wells takes the reader deep into the thought of James Barr, the prominent and controversial Oxford professor known for his works on biblical semantics, interpretation, and authority. Barr's criticisms of both modern biblical theology and fundamentalism and his rejection of traditional views of inspiration and authority provide the background for his proposal to view the Bible as a progressing human tradition. In this radical alternative, Barr seeks a way of "encouraging the Scriptures to speak freely" Wells contends, however, that Barr's critique is not radical enough to solve a major remaining problem of the relation of Scripture's divine and human factors. Wells's own assessment of that problem and proposed solution are found in his conclusion.

Setting the Desert on Fire : T.E. Lawrence and Britain's Secret War in Arabia, 1916-18 Barr, James Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2011;2006
It is 1916. The Allies are struggling in the Great War. The Ottoman Sultan calls for a pan-Islamic jihad against all non-Muslims except Germans. But Sharif Husein, ruler of the holy city of Mecca, is smarting under Turkish rule, fomenting Arab nationalism and lobbying the British to support him. It seems to the British a good idea secretly to encourage an Arab revolt. __Setting the Desert on Fire__ is a masterly account of this key moment made legendary by T. E. Lawrence, but here filled with a wide range of characters including the British Prime Minister Lloyd George, whose desire to capture 'Jerusalem by Christmas' had consequences that reverberate to this day.

Jewels of the Plains : Wildflowers of the Great Plains Grasslands and Hills Claude A. Barr; James H. Locklear Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis, 2015
"From Abronia to Zinnia, Jewels of the Plains describes the natural history and garden merits of more than five hundred Great Plains wildflowers. Considered the authoritative guide by native plant enthusiasts and horticulturists, it captures the unique beauty, resilience, and variety of wildflowers in the Great Plains. Claude A. Barr did not set out to be a writer. In 1910, he homesteaded 160 acres of prairie in the southwest corner of South Dakota, intending to become a farmer. Despite challenging conditions, Barr fell in love with the land and its native flora. He began contributing profiles of plains wildflowers to gardening magazines, which precipitated requests for seed and led him to start a mail-order nursery, Prairie Gem Ranch. What began as a Depression-era sideline eventually gained a worldwide clientele, and Barr became a respected ambassador for the wildflowers of this part of the American landscape. Decades of observing plants in the wild and growing them for his nursery, as well as careful study of scientific sources, gave Barr unequaled knowledge that culminated in this acclaimed book. Wonderfully written and deeply researched, Jewels of the Plains is more than a field guide or how-to manual. It’s a pioneering text on native plant horticulture that details plant life on the prairie in the voice of one with intimate familiarity with the subject. Each description reads like a mini nature essay, giving insight into both the plants and Barr’s engaging personality. Edited to incorporate new scientific information, this edition includes an Introduction and supplemental notes by botanist and horticulturalist James H. Locklear. He places Barr’s remarkable life and work in historic and scientific context, illuminating his accomplishments from a fresh perspective." --From publisher's description

Fundamentalism by James Barr Philadelphia: Westminster Press, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1978
This book is for those who must cope with the growing liberal/conservative rift in today's church. Today people in the church are disturbed at the upsurge of fundamentalist groups who give strong emphasis to the "inerrancy of the Bible," are openly hostile to modern critical study of theology and the Bible, and suspect that those who do not agree with them are not really Christians. To cope with the current influence of these groups, we must first understand who and what a fundamentalist is. This book is an excellent place to acquire that understanding. Professor Barr gives a complete, well-documented portrait of the fundamentalists and the religion they advocate. He looks at their whole belief structure -- their historical roots, their basic philosophy, their scholarship, where they currently stand, and what type of people they attract. He demonstrates fundamentalism to be an incoherent scholarly position and in contradiction with the central logic of the Christian faith. His critique focuses on issues that divide the church and that need to be dealt with in dialogue to prevent a further split in the church today. - Back cover.

The Bible in the Modern World James Barr New York: Harper & Row, [1st U.S. ed.], New York, New York State, 1973
he problems which Professor Barr examines have been borne in upon him over the years as a teacher of Old Testament to theological students, but more recently by active participation in a variety of international and ecumenical colloquia where the Bible as a whole has been under discussion... As we should expect, he asks us to consider what we mean by words like 'inspiration', 'authority', 'the Word of God', 'revelation', and devotes chapters to the Bible as Literature, the Bible as Information and the Bible in Theology. Dr Barr argues for the possibility of a multiplicity of theologies, but if they are to be Christian and not merely theistic, he claims that they must be based on the Bible as the 'classic model' for understanding God, the world and ourselves, and that they must be founded on the centrality of Jesus and the God who was already known in Israel. This is a timely, stimulating and illuminating book' (The Expository Times).'Professor Barr, well aware of the situation, tackles it with vigour and expertise. .The book has much to offer us all. It is an important contribution to a broader understanding of the nature of the Bible and provides a basis towards which most shades of opinion may confidently tend to converge' (Catholic Herald).

Lords of the Desert : The Battle Between the United States and Great Britain for Supremacy in the Modern Middle East James Barr New York: Basic Books, Hachette Book Group, New York, 2018
A path-breaking history of how the United States superseded Great Britain as the preeminent power in the Middle East, with urgent lessons for the present day We usually assume that Arab nationalism brought about the end of the British Empire in the Middle East -- that Gamal Abdel Nasser and other Arab leaders led popular uprisings against colonial rule that forced the overstretched British from the region. In Lords of the Desert, historian James Barr draws on newly declassified archives to argue instead that the US was the driving force behind the British exit. Though the two nations were allies, they found themselves at odds over just about every question, from who owned Saudi Arabia's oil to who should control the Suez Canal. Encouraging and exploiting widespread opposition to the British, the US intrigued its way to power -- ultimately becoming as resented as the British had been. As Barr shows, it is impossible to understand the region today without first grappling with this little-known prehistory.

In this tour de force, a premier Old Testament Scholar provides the reader with a grand overview of biblical tracing the developments, critiquing the major contributions (e.g., Gese, Childs, Brueggemann), and providing his own provocative theological implications of the various constructions. In his usual bold manner, he examines the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic contexts of biblical theology and their implications for our reading of both testaments in the modern world. Some of the key issues Bar addresses are typologies for doing biblical theology and Old Testament theology, the Apocryhpha and Pseudepigrapha, the relationship between the Old Testament and the New Testament, the history of religions versus theological approaches, and the Biblical Theology Movement.

In this detailed study, Barr examines the problem of standardization of spelling in the Bible. He scrutinizes both the optional use or omission of letters such as W or Y to indicate certain vowels, and the several variations of spelling present in the individual books and passages, suggesting explanations of how the different spellings occur on the same page or even in the same verse. An authoritative and original analysis, this book will make an important contribution to the development of the text of the Hebrew Bible and to the history of the Hebrew language.

Lords of the Desert : The Battle Between the United States and Great Britain for Supremacy in the Modern Middle East James Barr Basic Civitas Books, Hachette Book Group, New York, 2018
Within a single generation, between 1945 and 1970, America replaced Britain as the dominant power in the Middle East. By any standard, it was an extraordinary role reversal and it was one that came with very little warning. Starting in the nineteenth century, Britain had first established themselves as protector of the sheikhdoms along the southern shore of the Persian Gulf, before acquiring Aden, Cyprus and then Egypt and the Sudan. In the Great War in the twentieth century they then added Palestine, Jordan and Iraq by conquest. And finally Britain had jointly run Iran with the Soviets since 1941 to defeat Hitler. The discovery of vast oil reserves in Saudi Arabia, at a time when the United States’ own domestic reserves seemed to be running low, made America’s initial interest commercial. But trade required political stability. Its absence led the United States to look more critically at the conduct of her major ally in the region. Added to this theatre of operations, the Zionists in Israel after World War One actively pursued a policy to establish and win an independent state for the Jews – which spurred on by thousands of Jewish refugees from war-torn Europe enabled them to build up the forces necessary to achieve power. How would Britain manage both Arab and Jewish positions and still maintain power? In 1943 they came up with an ambitious plan do so, and in 1944 put it into action. Lords of the Desert tells this story.
