Pode Hole Farm provided Bronze Age to Romano-British material; Paston Romano-British; Longstanton Late Saxon and Medieval; and Bassingbourn Saxon and Medieval. Each has a similar format and layout, starting with a review of the processes leading up to the fieldwork and an outline of the methods used followed by acknowlegements. In the case of three of the excavations, an historical and documentary section follows which summarizes the known data before excavation began and provides a necessary historical background. In a general concluding discussion some points are considered from the excavations and the results are set within their county context.

The Armburgh papers : the Brokholes inheritance in Warwickshire, Hertfordshire, and Essex, c.1417-c.1453 : Chetham's Manuscript Mun. E.6.10 (4) Joan Armburgh; Robert Armburgh; Christine Carpenter; Chetham's Library Boydell Press Imprint, Boydell & Brewer, Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK, 1998
Newly-discovered family correspondence to stand alongside the Paston letters and Stonor papers. The collection of fifteenth-century letters printed here for the first time stands alongside the Paston and Stonor correspondence in its intrinsic interest and the light it sheds on contemporary gentry life. Edited from a recentlydiscovered manuscript in Chetham's Library, Manchester (Mun.E.6.10 (4)), the letters deal largely with the prolonged dispute over the Brokholes inheritance in Warwickshire, Hertfordshire, and Essex, and are concerned principallywith the affairs of one of the claimants, Joan Armburgh, and her husband Robert. The material mostly derives from the period c.1420-50, one of growing unease in national politics, which the letters reflect; but they are more concerned with affairs closer to home, and provide fascinating insights on local politics, the networks of'bastard feudalism'which bound the gentry to their lords and to each other, on the impact of lengthy litigation on a gentry family (especially its finances), and, more generally, on the management of their lands and business affairs. The startlingly vivid language of some of the less formal entries brings the writers strikingly to life. Professor CHRISTINE CARPENTER is Reader in Medieval English History at Cambridge University.

Bread and Ale for the Brethren: The Provisioning of Norwich Cathedral Priory, 1260–1536 (11) (Studies in Regional and Local History) Philip Slavin Hertfordshire, UK : University of Hertfordshire Press, Studies in regional and local history (Hertfordshire, England), v. 11, Hertfordshire, UK, 2012
Despite increased commercialization and an efficient network of local markets in 1300s Europe—as well as significant costs and risks associated with the production, transportation, and storage of food—some landed lords, monasteries, and convents continued to rely on the produce of their own estates. This detailed study sets out to account for the puzzling situation, covering the period between 1260 and 1536, with an in-depth analysis of the changing patterns and fortunes of the provisioning of Norwich Cathedral Priory. As it examines the entire process of food delivery from field to table, the record explores the question of food security within the context of the various crises in the 14th century, and also illustrates the aftereffects of the Black Death. Although providing unparalleled insight into the Priory, the book also serves as an important resource on understanding the Late Middle Ages economy of England and society during a time of upheaval.

Dividing the county of Hertfordshire into four broad regions-the "champion" countryside in the north, the Chiltern dip slope to the west, the fertile boulder clays of the east, and the unwelcoming London Clay in the south-this volume explains how, in the course of the middle ages, natural characteristics influenced the development of land use and settlement to create a range of distinctive landscapes. Lichfield and the Lands of St Chad : Creating Community in Early Medieval Mercia Andrew Sargent Studies in Regional and Local, Studies in regional and local history (Hertfordshire, England), Hatfield, Hertfordshire, UK, 2020
This book focuses on the period from the seventh to eleventh centuries that witnessed the rise and fall of Mercia, the great Midland kingdom, and, later, the formation of England. Specifically, it explores the relationship between the bishops of Lichfield and the multiple communities of their diocese. Andrew Sargent tackles the challenge posed by the evidential 'hole' at the heart of Mercia by synthesising different kinds of evidence - archaeological, textual, topographical and toponymical - to reconstruct the landscapes inhabited by these communities, which intersected at cathedrals and minsters and other less formal meeting-places. Most such communities were engaged in the construction of hierarchies, and Sargent assigns spiritual lordship a dominant role in this. Tracing the interconnections of these communities, he focuses on the development of the Church of Lichfield, an extensive episcopal community situated within a dynamic mesh of institutions and groups within and beyond the diocese, from the royal court to the smallest township. The regional elite combined spiritual and secular forms of lordship to advance and entrench their mutual interests, and the entanglement of royal and episcopal governance is one of the key focuses of Andrew Sargent's outstanding new research. How the bishops shaped and promoted spiritual discourse to establish their own authority within society is key. This is traced through the meagre textual sources, which hint at the bishops' involvement in the wider flow of ecclesiastical politics in Britain, and through the archaeological and landscape evidence for churches and minsters held not only by bishops, but also by kings and aristocrats within the diocese. Saints' cults offer a particularly effective medium through which to study these developments: St Chad, the Mercian bishop who established the see at Lichfield, became an influential spiritual patron for subsequent bishops of the diocese, but other lesser known saints also focused c

Hertfordshire Murders (Sutton True Crime History) Nicholas Connell; Ruth Stratton The History Press Ltd, Place of publication not identified, 2003
In spite of its small size and rural character Hertfordshire has been the location for some of the most infamous and fiendish murders in the history of England. Spanning four centuries, Hertfordshire Murders contains accounts of many of these crimes. Famous cases are re-examined with the help of previously unused archive material and several other major cases are included in a book for the first time. Among the stories are the murder of a reputed witch by an angry village mod and the tale of John Thurtell who short the regency buck William Weare over gambling debts. His execution attracted a crowd of 15,000. Also featured are the accounts of the last man and woman to be executed in Hertfordshire. Supported by dozens of contemporary illustrations, Hertfordshire Murders reveals that behind the county's scenic countryside and rural charm lurks a murky criminal heritage.|In spite of its small size and rural character Hertfordshire has been the location for some of the most infamous and fiendish murders in the history of England.

Bread and Ale for the Brethren: The Provisioning of Norwich Cathedral Priory, 1260–1536 (11) (Studies in Regional and Local History) Philip Slavin Hertfordshire, UK : University of Hertfordshire Press, Independent Publishers Group, Hatfield [England], 2012
Although providing unparalleled insight into the Priory, the book also serves as an important resource on understanding the Late Middle Ages economy of England and society during a time of upheaval.

nexusstc/Lichfield and the Lands of St Chad: Creating Community in Early Medieval Mercia/49a5c93abfc374f4d6fb24034bcebce7.pdf
Lichfield and the Lands of St Chad : Creating Community in Early Medieval Mercia Andrew Sargent University Of Hertfordshire Press, Studies in Regional and Local History, 19, 2020
This book focuses on the period from the seventh to eleventh centuries that witnessed the rise and fall of Mercia, the great Midland kingdom, and, later, the formation of England. Specifically, it explores the relationship between the bishops of Lichfield and the multiple communities of their diocese. Andrew Sargent tackles the challenge posed by the evidential ‘hole’ at the heart of Mercia by synthesising different kinds of evidence—archaeological, textual, topographical, and toponymical—to reconstruct the landscapes inhabited by these communities, which intersected at cathedrals, minsters, and other less formal meeting-places. The regional elite combined spiritual and secular forms of lordship to advance and entrench their mutual interests, and the entanglement of royal and episcopal governance is one of the key focuses of Andrew Sargent’s outstanding new research. How the bishops shaped and promoted spiritual discourse to establish their own authority within society is key. This is traced through meagre textual sources which hint at the bishops’ involvement in the wider flow of ecclesiastical politics in Britain, and through the archaeological and landscape evidence for churches and minsters held not only by bishops, but also by kings and aristocrats within the diocese.

Saints’ cults offer a particularly effective medium through which to study these developments: St Chad, the Mercian bishop who established the see at Lichfield, became an influential spiritual patron for subsequent bishops of the diocese, but other lesser known saints also focused c
