David Ben-Gurion : Politics and Leadership in Israel
edited by Ronald W. Zweig
Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 1991
First published in 2004. It may well be that genius begins where fear ends: not to be afraid to question what is known, not to be afraid to be original. David Ben-Gurion did not try to imitate anyone...He was endowed with a mind that sought out whats was new and was capable of penetrating the deepest recesses. First and foremost, he challenged every Jew who believed it was the fate of Jews to live in the Diaspora, and he believed that the Jews could be a nation of farmers, industrialists, soldiers, pioneers, and not only scientists and intellectuals. He decided that the time had come to establish a Jewish state, yet once it had been founded, he was not satisfied- it must be an exemplary state, a chosen state.

Ben-Gurion and the palestinian arabs : from peace to war
Teveth, Shabtai, 1925-2014
Oxford [Oxfordshire] ; New York: Oxford University Press, Oxford [Oxfordshire], New York, England, 1985

Translated and condensed from an acclaimed Hebrew study, this is a major revisionist work by one of Israel's leading journalists and author of a multivolume biography of David Ben-Gurion.
In the 42 years between 1921 and 1963—during which he served as labor leader, Zionist statesman, and Prime Minister of an independent Israel—Ben-Gurion's influence grew to have a decisive effect upon Jewish policy. Israel came to view the Arabs, to a great extent, through the eyes of David Ben-Gurion. From the outset, he was one of the few leaders of Labor Zionism who sought to anchor the Jewish right to Palestine in something other than historical argument and nationalist myth, Shabtai Teveth writes. But his views have been misinterpreted, derived almost exclusively from his public pronouncements. Teveth delves below the surface of Ben-Gurion's public and diplomatic stance, examining his diaries and letters and the minutes of closed meetings. On the basis of this new edvidence, Teveth gives us a fresh understanding of the man who has long been regarded as harsh and uncompromising, showing that Ben-Gurion was in fact the ultimate pragmatist, playing the roles of peacemaker and militant alternately and at times even simultaneously.
About the Author:
Shabtai Teveth is a Research Fellow at the Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies and at the Weizmann Zionist Research Center at Tel-Aviv University. He is also the author of The Tanks of Tammuz, The Cursed Blessing, and Moshe Dayan: A Biography.

Memoirs: David Ben-Gurion
David Ben-Gurion
World Publishing Company, 1970
David Ben-Gurion has been, for more than half a century, inseparably linked with the building of Israel as the Jewish State. More than any other man he is responsible for Israel's existence today; to millions of Jews, he is the Churchill of Israel. The story of his life is, in a very real sense, the story of Israel and the centuries of a dream. This book unfolds the story of Ben-Gurion's life in his own words. How he arrived in Israel in 1906, when there was no question of nationhood but rather of holding on to some rocky fields against the Bedouins. How he served in the Jewish battalion in World War I, the first Jewish military unit since the fall of Jerusalem in 73 AD. How he participated in the implementation of the Balfour Declaration, finally opening Palestine to Jewish immigration. Why, some years later, he struggled desperately against Britain's reversal of this policy on the eve of World War II, when the Nazis were preparing their "Final Solution." How he supported the illegal

Jewish Identities: Fifty Intellectuals Answer Ben Gurion (Jewish Identities in a Changing World Jewish Identities in a)
Professor Of Sociology Eliezer Ben-rafael
Brill Academic Publishers, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2002

Who and what is a Jew? Is there any common denominator between an ultra-Orthodox rabbi of an Israeli North African community and a Berkeley academic of the Movement for a Secular and Humanistic Judaism? Do Jews the world over convergre and emphasize their unity or do they share contrasting concepts of collective identity? Part I of this book presents a systematic discussion of Jewish identities in this era of (post)modernity. The opportunity is offered by a set of invaluable texts, which appear in Part II. These texts about Jewish identity were invited, in 1958, by Ben-Gurion from 50 intellectuals - rabbis, writers, scientists and lawyers -, from the Diaspora and Israel, representative of the principal streams of contemporary Jewish thought.

David Ben-Gurion : Politics and Leadership in Israel
Ronald W. Zweig (editor)
Routledge, 1, 2015

A state at any cost : the life of David Ben-Gurion
Tom Segev; Haim Watzman
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, First American edition, New York, 2019
**The definitive and newsworthy biography of Israel's founder and longest-serving prime minister**When Tom Segev's biography of David Ben-Gurion was published in Israel in early 2018, it was a major event, making headlines and earning worldwide coverage in__The New York Times__and elsewhere. The culmination of a lifetime's work, Segev's book casts the history of Israel and its founder in a bracing new light. Using large amounts of previously unrevealed archival material, Segev demonstrates Ben-Gurion's power, skills, and achievements, as well as his limitations, weaknesses, and failures. Segev's probing account reveals for the first time Ben-Gurion's secret negotiations with the British on the eve of Israel's independence, his willingness to countenance the forced transfer of Arab neighbors, his relative indifference to the status of Jerusalem and Israel's nuclear program, and his occasional "nutty moments"--from UFO sightings to a plan for Israel to acquire territory in South America. Segev also shows that Ben-Gurion first heard about the Holocaust from a Palestinian Arab acquaintance, and reveals Ben-Gurion's tempestuous private life, including the testimony of four longtime lovers. Many admired Ben-Gurion in his day, and many now miss his vision and inspiration, his boldness and integrity. Others have vilified him as an aggressive, divisive, dour, and often capricious politician. But only a few have really grasped the most intimate and guarded aspects of his complex character, the man behind the myth. As in his seven previous books on Israel and the Holocaust, which have been translated into fourteen languages, Segev again offers a vibrant page-turner with unexpected discoveries and original insights.

Ben-Gurion's Political Struggles, 1963-1967: A Lion in Winter (Israeli History, Politics, and Society)
Zakai Shalom; NetLibrary, Inc
Routledge, Cass studies in Israeli history, politics and society, 44, 1. publ, London, 2006
An essential insight into this central figure in the modern history of Israel and Zionism. This important new study explores the years that built up to the Six Day War and details the crucial issues and events the world is still grappling with today. This book traces Daniel Ben-Gurion’s waning years in Israeli politics. After his resignation from the office of prime minister in 1963, the ‘Old Man’ soon lost faith in his self-chose successor, Levi Eshkol, and ceaselessly tried to undermine the latter’s premiership, eventually forming a breakaway party. The events leading up to the Six-Day War in June 1967 caught Ben-Gurion by surprise. During the weeks-long ‘waiting period’ prior to the outbreak of hostilities, he paid little attention to daily security issues. But when war did erupt, he displayed one of his key leadership skills – the ability to formulate an accurate, independent situation assessment. It will be of interest to scholars working in Israeli politics and history, this is a lucid, thoroughly researched account of the sunset years of the driving force behind the Israeli nation-state.

A promise fulfilled : Theodor Herzl, Chaim Weitzmann, and David Ben-Gurion, and the creation of the state of Israel
Greenfeld, Howard
New York: Greenwillow Books, 1st ed, New York, ©2005
Here are the stories of three very different men -- a journalist, a scientist, and a labor leader -- who shared the same seemingly impossible dream. They were determined to create a Jewish state in the land God promised to Abraham and his descendants -- land the Jews had been exiled from nearly two thousand years ago. They faced towering obstacles and dramatic setbacks. Yet they prevailed. How? Spanning nearly ninety years and many significant world events, this concise history tells the tale of the creation of the state of Israel through the lives of three men. Theodor Herzl, Chaim Weizmann, and David Ben-Gurion at times disagreed -- even vehemently -- but each needed the other two in order to accomplish a common goal. A Promise Fulfilled shows how events built on one another -- how the way one crisis was handled influenced the way the next played out. It is essential reading, not just for understanding how the nation of Israel came to be, but for insight into the controversy and crises that surround this country even today.

Ben-Gurion's spy : the story of the political scandal that shaped modern Israel
Teveth, Shabtai, 1925-
New York: Columbia University Press, New York, New York State, 1996
Ben-Gurion's Spy is a riveting exploration of the scandalous Lavon affair in Israel, which in 1963 toppled the government and ended the political life of David Ben-Gurion, the nation's founding father. In the early 1950s, a team of Israeli agents was ordered - without prior knowledge of either the cabinet or the military high command - to stage a series of bombings of American and British institutions in Egypt, in an attempt to forestall Great Britain's planned withdrawal from the Suez. Betrayed by their commander, the agents were captured and put on trial in Cairo. Who gave the orders for the sabotage attempts? Was it defense minister Pinhas Lavon, Ben-Gurion's hand-picked successor? Or was it Director of Military Intelligence Benyamin Givly, a cunning and ruthlessly ambitious officer? Both denied responsibility, and their dispute turned into a charade of character assassination, forgery, cover-up, and vendetta that forced Lavon's resignation in 1955. Ben-Gurion's Spy explores the political implications of the Lavon affair, demonstrating how the episode helped to usher in Menahem Begin's Likud - whose doctrine claims the whole of Palestine - and to initiate a radical shift in defense policy from restraint to violent, sometimes reckless, retribution. Unlike similar incidents like Iran-Contra or the Dreyfus affair, the Israeli analogue saw no judicial inquiry or public hearings, nor any published documents. Teveth fills in the vital information, employing classified documents including minutes of secret cabinet and military tribunal investigations, as well as interviews with key actors and the private correspondence of Givly and his doting secretary, Dalia Carmel.

BEN-GURION AGAINST THE KNESSET (Cass Series--Israeli History, Politics, and Society)
Giora Goldberg; Chaya Naor
Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2003
The power struggle between Ben-Gurion and the Knesset was not primarily concerned with who should hold the reins of power, but with the ideals that should lie behind government. Ben-Gurion did not think that the Knesset had the moral backbone required at a historic turning-point in Israeli history, when the character of the nation was being developed; although he conceded that it was capable of dealing with the more mundane administrative tasks. He therefore denied the Knesset the right to take part in the policy-making process, caused a decline in the support of the elite and the general public, encouraged partisanship, and endeavored to reduce competitiveness. Ben-Gurion was so dismissive of the Knesset and its members, that he would not even attend parties at which Knesset members were being given awards.
