King of Ragtime
Berlin, Edward A.
Oxford University Press, USA, 1994
In 1974, the academy award-winning film The Sting brought back the music of Scott Joplin, a black ragtime composer who died in 1917. Led by The Entertainer, one of the most popular pieces of the mid-1970s, a revival of his music resulted in events unprecedented in American musical history. Never before had any composer's music been so acclaimed by both the popular and classical music worlds. While reaching a "Top Ten" position in the pop charts, Joplin's music was also being performed in classical recitals and setting new heights for sales of classical records. His opera Treemonisha was performed both in opera houses and on Broadway.

King of Ragtime : Scott Joplin and His Era
Berlin, Edward A.
IRL Press at Oxford University Press, 2nd edition | Retail, 2016
When it was first published in 1994, King of Ragtime: Scott Joplin and his Era was widely heralded not only as the most thorough investigation of Scott Joplin's life and music, but also as a gripping read, almost a detective story. This new and expanded edition-more than a third larger than the first-goes far beyond the original publication in uncovering new details of the composer's life and insights into his music. It explores Joplin's early, pre-ragtime career as a quartet singer, a period of his life that was previously unknown. The book also surveys the nature of ragtime before Joplin entered the ragtime scene and how he changed the style. Author Edward A. Berlin offers insightful commentary on each of all of Joplin's works, showing his influence on other ragtime and non-ragtime composers. He traces too Joplin's continued music studies late in life, and how these reflect his dedication to education and probably account for the radical changes that occur in his last few rags. And he puts new emphasis on Joplin's efforts in musical theater, bringing in early versions of his Ragtime Dance and its precedents. Joplin's wife Freddie is shown to be a major inspiration to his opera Treemonisha, with her family background and values being reflected in that work. Joplin's reputation faded in the 1920s-30s, but interest in his music slowly re-emerged in the 1940s and gradually built toward a spectacular revival in the 1970s, when major battles ensued for possession of rights [Publisher description]

King of Ragtime : Scott Joplin and His Era
Edward A. Berlin
Oxford University Press, USA, Oxford University Press USA, New York, 1994
In 1974, the academy award-winning film __The Sting__ brought back the music of Scott Joplin, a black ragtime composer who died in 1917. Led by __The Entertainer__, one of the most popular pieces of the mid-1970s, a revival of his music resulted in events unprecedented in American musical history. While reaching a "Top Ten" position in the pop charts, Joplin's music was also being performed in classical recitals and setting new heights for sales of classical records. His opera __Treemonisha__ was performed both in opera houses and on Broadway. Destined to be the definitive work on the man and his music, __King of Ragtime__ is written by Edward A. Berlin. A renowned authority on Joplin and the author of the acclaimed and widely cited __Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History__, Berlin redefines the Scott Joplin biography. Using the tools of a trained musicologist, he has uncovered a vast amount of new information about Joplin. His biography truly documents the story of the composer, replacing the myths and unsupported anecdotes of previous histories. He shows how Joplin's opera __Treemonisha__ was a tribute to the woman he loved, a woman other biographers never even mentioned. Berlin also reveals that Joplin was an associate of Irving Berlin, and that he accused Berlin of stealing his music to compose __Alexander's Ragtime Band__ in 1911. Berlin paints a vivid picture of the ragtime years, placing Scott Joplin's story in its historical context. The composer emerges as a representative of the first post-Civil War generation of African Americans, of the men and women who found in the world of entertainment a way out of poverty and lowly social status. __King of Ragtime__ recreates the excitement of these pioneers, who dreamed of greatness as they sought to expand the limits society placed upon their race.

The Analytic Hierarchy Process : Applications and Studies
John Malcolm Alexander; Bruce L Golden; Edward A Wasil; Patrick T Harker; Springer-Verlag (Berlin)
Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2012
Management science is a di scipl ine dedicated to the development of techniques that enable decision makers to cope with the increasing complexity of our world. The early burst of excitement which was spawned by the development and successful applications of linear programming to problems in both the public and private sectors has challenged researchers to develop even more sophisticated methods to deal with the complex nature of decision making. Sophistication, however, does not always trans 1 ate into more complex mathematics. Professor Thomas L. Saaty was working for the U. S. Defense Department and for the U. S. Department of State in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In these positions, Professor Saaty was exposed to some of the most complex decisions facing the world: arms control, the Middle East problem, and the development of a transport system for a Third World country. While having made major contributions to numerous areas of mathematics and the theory of operations research, he soon realized that one did not need complex mathematics to come to grips with these decision problems, just the right mathematics! Thus, Professor Saaty set out to develop a mathematically-based technique for analyzing complex situations which was sophisticated in its simplicity. This technique became known as the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and has become very successful in helping decision makers to structure and analyze a wide range of problems.

Computer aided analysis and optimization of mechanical system dynamics [proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Inst. on Computer Aided Analysis and Optimization of Mechan. System Dynamics held at Iowa City/USA, August 1 - 12, 1983
Edward J. Haug (auth.), Edward J. Haug (eds.)
Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, NATO ASI Series 9, 1, 1984
These proceedings contain lectures presented at the NATO-NSF-ARO sponsored Advanced Study I~stitute on "Computer Aided Analysis and Optimization of Mechanical System Dynamics" held in Iowa City, Iowa, 1-12 August, 1983. Lectures were presented by free world leaders in the field of machine dynamics and optimization. Participants in the Institute were specialists from throughout NATO, many of whom presented contributed papers during the Institute and all of whom participated actively in discussions on technical aspects of the subject. The proceedings are organized into five parts, each addressing a technical aspect of the field of computational methods in dynamic analysis and design of mechanical systems. The introductory paper presented first in the text outlines some of the numerous technical considerations that must be given to organizing effective and efficient computational methods and computer codes to serve engineers in dynamic analysis and design of mechanical systems. Two substantially different approaches to the field are identified in this introduction and are given attention throughout the text. The first and most classical approach uses a minimal set of Lagrangian generalized coordinates to formulate equations of motion with a small number of constraints. The second method uses a maximal set of cartesian coordinates and leads to a large number of differential and algebraic constraint equations of rather simple form. These fundamentally different approaches and associated methods of symbolic computation, numerical integration, and use of computer graphics are addressed throughout the proceedings. Multi- Stage Production Planning and Inventory Control
Sven Axsäter; Christoph Schneeweiss; Edward Silver
Springer Berlin / Heidelberg, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 1986
This paper treats a two-echelon inventory system. The higher echelon is a single location reffered to as the depot, which places orders for supply of a single com modity. The lower echelon consists of several points, called the retailers, which are supplied by shipments from the depot, and at which random demands for the item occur. Stocks are reviewed and decisions are made periodically. Orders and/or shipments may each require a fixed lead time before reaching their respective desti nations. Section II gives a short literature review of distribution research. Section III introduces the multi-echelon distribution system together with the underlying as sumptions and gives a description of how this problem can be viewed as a Markovian Decision Process. Section IV discusses the concept of cost modifications in a distribution context. Section V presents the test-examples together with their optimal solutions and also gives the characteristic properties of these optimal solutions. These properties then will be used in section VI to give adapted ver sions of various heuristics which were used in assembly experiments previously and which will be tested against the test-examples. Voices Under Berlin: The Tale of a Monterey Mary
Hill, Edward; Heinrich, Thomas
The Author, United States, 2008
The Winner of Five Book Awards 2009 PODBRAM Award for "Best Historical Concept" "Puss Reboots" book blog: Top 10 List of Books Reviewed in 2009 Hollywood Book Festival Award Branson Stars & Flags Book Award Military Writers' Society Book of the Month --Voicesunderberlin.com (added by author) Throughout the Cold War, the divided city of Berlin was the epicenter of spy films and literature, especially in the hands of masters like John Le Carré and Len Deighton. For decades, we saw and read about Western agents sneaking in and Eastern defectors sneaking out of East Berlin--over, under, and through the most iconic symbol of the times--the Berlin Wall. But T.H.E. Hill's new 2008 "Voices Under Berlin: The Tale of a Monterey Mary" has nothing to do with such spy vs. spy duels in Germany. Instead, his subject is the long-neglected Berlin Tunnel of the 1950s and the cryptographers, linguists, and analysts sifting through intercepted intelligence from East Germany to the masters in Moscow. Better--Voices Under Berlin is, in fact, perhaps the funniest spy book ever written. It's not a parody or satire of the 007 mythos nor is it a continuation of themes in the novels by the likes of Graham Greene or Eric Ambler poking fun at the ineptitude of clandestine services. Still, in the tradition of Greene and Ambler, Voices Under Berlin contains many literate qualities that make it a work of special consideration, worthy of an audience much broader than that of espionage enthusiasts or those interested in Cold War history. --Dr. Wesley Britton, author of "Spy Television", "Beyond Bond: Spies in Fiction and Film", and "Onscreen and Undercover: The Ultimate Book of Movie Espionage", writing at SpyWise.net "Voices was a treat to read because it accurately, amusingly, and respectfully captures--as never before was so well done--the carefree yet dedicated attitude of U.S. military intelligence linguists. With humor, "Voices" describes how intelligence folks successfully and honorably worked in Berlin, as they did worldwide, to defeat the Soviets in the Cold War."

Radiological diagnosis of breast diseases / edited by Michael Friedrich and Edward A. Sickles
Ed. by Michael Friedrich a. Edward A. Sickles; With contributions by D. D. Adler [et al.]; Forew. by Friedrich H. W. Heuck
Springer Berlin, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2012
This book has been edited by two of the best known experts in the field of breast diseases. It was in 1975 that MICHAEL FRIEDRICH, Professor of Radiology at the Free University of Berlin, commenced his efforts to develop and improve mammography so as to allow the early diagnosis of breast cancer. The outstanding results that he has achieved have led to awards from the German Radiological Society (the Hermann-Holthusen-Ring) and the Medical High School, Hannover (the Johann-Georg-Zimmermann Prize). EDWARD ALLEN SICKLES, Professor of Radiology and Chief of the Breast Imaging Section at the University of California San Francisco, has since 1976 devoted much effort to comparison of the different methods of diagnostic radiology of the breast, including ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging. He has received many distinctions and important awards in recognition of his studies. Professor Sickles is one of the leading radiologists in this field of research in the United States, and is well known all over the world. Erscheinungsdatum: 02.11.1999

Intelligent Systems: Safety, Reliability And Maintainability Issues (nato Asi Subseries F:)
A. Meystel (auth.), Okyay Kaynak, Ger Honderd, Edward Grant (eds.)
Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, NATO ASI Series -- 114, NATO ASI Series -- 114., Berlin, Heidelberg, Germany, 1993
This book is a collection of some of the papers that were presented during a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Intelligent Systems: Safety, Reliability and Maintainability Issues" that was held in Kusadasi, Turkey during August 24- 28, 1992. Attendance at this workshop was mainly by invitation only, drawing people internationally representing industry, government and the academic community. Many of the participants were internationally recognized leaders in the topic of the workshop. The purpose of the ARW was to bring together a highly distinguished group of people with the express purpose of debating where the issues of safety, reliability and maintainability place direct and tangible constraints on the development of intelligent systems. As a consequence, one of the major debating points in the ARW was the definition of intelligence, intelligent behaviour and their relation to complex dynamic systems. Two major conclusions evolved from the ARW are: 1. A continued need exists to develop formal, theoretical frameworks for the architecture of such systems, together with a reflection on the concept of intelligence. 2. There is a need to focus greater attention to the role that the human play in controlling intelligent systems. The workshop began by considering the typical features of an intelligent system. The complexity associated with multi-resolutional architectures was then discussed, leading to the identification of a necessity for the use of a combinatorial synthesis/approach. This was followed by a session on human interface issues. Erscheinungsdatum: 08.10.2012

The Prokaryotes : Prokaryotic Biology and Symbiotic Associations
Carl R. Woese (auth.), Eugene Rosenberg, Edward F. DeLong, Stephen Lory, Erko Stackebrandt, Fabiano Thompson (eds.)
Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, 4th ed. 2013, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2013
The Prokaryotes is a comprehensive, multi-authored, peer reviewed reference work on Bacteria and Achaea. This fourth edition of The Prokaryotes is organized to cover all taxonomic diversity, using the family level to delineate chapters. Different from other resources, this new Springer product includes not only taxonomy, but also prokaryotic biology and technology of taxa in a broad context. Technological aspects highlight the usefulness of prokaryotes in processes and products, including biocontrol agents and as genetics tools. The content of the expanded fourth edition is divided into two parts: Part 1 contains review chapters dealing with the most important general concepts in molecular, applied and general prokaryote biology; Part 2 describes the known properties of specific taxonomic groups. Two completely new sections have been added to Part 1: bacterial communities and human bacteriology. The bacterial communities section reflects the growing realization that studies on pure cultures of bacteria have led to an incomplete picture of the microbial world for two fundamental reasons: the vast majority of bacteria in soil, water and associated with biological tissues are currently not culturable, and that an understanding of microbial ecology requires knowledge on how different bacterial species interact with each other in their natural environment. The new section on human microbiology deals with bacteria associated with healthy humans and bacterial pathogenesis. Each of the major human diseases caused by bacteria is reviewed, from identifying the pathogens by classical clinical and non-culturing techniques to the biochemical mechanisms of the disease process. The 4th edition of The Prokaryotes is the most complete resource on the biology of prokaryotes. The following volumes are published consecutively within the 4th Edition: Prokaryotic Biology and Symbiotic Associations Prokaryotic Communities and Ecophysiology Prokaryotic Physiology and Biochemistry Applied Bacteriology and Biotechnology Human Microbiology Actinobacteria Firmicutes Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria Gammaproteobacteria Deltaproteobacteria and Epsilonproteobacteria Other Major Lineages of Bacteria and the Archaea

Traditions in Transmission: The medical and magical texts of a fourth-century Greek and Coptic codex (Michigan Ms. 136) in context (Archiv Für ... Und Verwandte Gebiete – Beihefte, 47)
Zellmann-Rohrer, Michael W., Love, Edward O. D.
de Gruyter GmbH, Walter, Archiv für Papyrusforschung und verwandte Gebiete – Beihefte 47, 2022

This book is a re-edition and detailed study of a parchment codex from Egypt of the fourth century CE with Greek and Coptic recipes for healing through magic and pharmacology (Ann Arbor, University of Michigan Library Ms. 136). A text and annotated translation were published in a brief journal article by William H. Worrell in 1935, but the codex has been understudied since then. This new edition offers advances in readings and interpretation, a thorough philological commentary, and accompanying studies on the ritual and medical traditions to which the codex belongs and its position in the linguistic landscape of Egypt. The recipes comprise magical rituals for healing and broader personal advancement, pharmacological and related medical recipes, and advice for the management of a household. Traditional Egyptian religion and ritual are illustrated in interaction with medical practices of Hellenic culture more recently introduced to Egypt, and the archaic, even poetic language of some of the Coptic invocations featuring the Egyptian gods Amun and Thoth share pages with an incantation constructed from the verses of Homer.

Design of Digital Computers : An Introduction
Hans W. Gschwind, Edward J. McCluskey (auth.)
Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Texts and Monographs in Computer Science, 2nd, 1975
I have been using the first edition of this book as a text for a number of years. This was in a Stanford University first-year graduate course that is taken by students from Electrical Engineering or Computer Science who are interested in computer organization. Because computer tech nology has been changing so rapidly, it became necessary to supplement the text with additional readings. My colleagues and I examined many newly-published books for possible use as texts. We found no book with the same excellent choice of topics and thorough coverage as Dr. Gschwind's first edition. Springer-Verlag's request that I prepare a second edition of this book came at a time when I had many other projects underway. Before I de cided whether to take on the project of preparing a revision, I asked many of my students for their opinions of Dr. Gschwind's first edition. Even I was surprised by the enthusiasm that this rather skeptical and critical group of students displayed for the book. It was this enthusiasm that convinced me of the value and importance of preparing the revision.

Computer Integrated Experimentation (environmental And Energetics Series)
Edward B. Magrab
Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Springer Nature (Textbooks & Major Reference Works), Berlin, Heidelberg, 2012
This book provides a basis by which instruments and transducers can be selected, assembled and integrated with a computer to measure and control physical processes in an accurate and predictable manner. It consists of two parts, the first of which lays the theoretical foundation for the second. First the Fourier analysis of signals are summarized. Then, from a systems point of view, the following chapters introduce the important aspects of filters, amplifiers and analog-to-digital converters. The second half of the book first discusses in depth the importance of the timing of the computer with its instruments, transducers and actuators. It then summarizes the physical and functional aspects of transducers and actuators and gives numerous detailed examples of how they can be integrated into computer controlled experiments and processes.

The Analytic Hierarchy Process : Applications and Studies
Bruce L. Golden, Edward A. Wasil, Patrick T. Harker (auth.), Professor Bruce L. Golden, Assistant Professor Edward A. Wasil, Assistant Professor Patrick T. Harker (eds.)
Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989, 2012-05-14
Novel phytoplankton blooms causes and impacts of recurrent brown tides and other unusual blooms ; [this volume gathers the proceedings of the invited lectures of the Symposium on Novel Phytoplankton Blooms: Causes and Impacts of Recurrent Brown Tides and Other Unusual Blooms, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, NY, USA, 27 & 28, 1988
E.m. Cosper (editor), V.m. Bricelj (editor), E.j. Carpenter (editor)
Springer-Verlag; Springer, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2012
A massive phytoplankton bloom, locally termed'brown tide', suddenly appeared in Long Island marine bays in 1985, colored the water a dark brown, decimated eelgrass beds and caused catastrophic starvation and recruitment failure of commercially important bay scallop populations. These'brown tide'blooms, caused by a very small, previously undescribed chrysophyte alga, have directly affected the estuarine environments of three northeastern American states: Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey. other phytoplankton blooms such as'red tides'caused by dinoflagellates and'green tides'from chlorophytes as well as blue-green algae blooms have long been recognized and studied world wide, however, the unusual nature of these'brown tide'blooms caught the interest of many people. Scientists were particularly intrigued by the discovery of a previously unknown microalga which provided the opportunity to learn more about small microalgae, picoplankters, which are usually ignored due to the difficulty in identifying species. A symposium entitled,'Novel Phytoplankton Blooms: Causes and Impacts of Recurrent Brown Tides and Other Unusual Blooms', was convened on October 27 and 28 at the State University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island, with 220 registrants and nearly 50 scientific papers presented by researchers from the united States as well as Europe. The conference documented unusual bloom occurrences of recent and past years on a worldwide basis as well as northeast regional recurrences of the previously unknown'brown tide'blooms.

Fragile Ecosystems : evaluation of research and applications in the neotropics ; a report of the Institute of ecology, TIE
Edward G. Farnworth, Frank B. Golley (auth.), Edward G. Farnworth, Frank B. Golley (eds.)
Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, 1974 edition, Berlin, 1974
The Institute of Ecology (TIE) was organized to provide a mech anism for addressing ecological and environmental issues that were beyond the special interests of ecology as a profession. One method of evaluating such issues is the workshop, and this report describes the results of the third TIE workshop on a major environmental subject. The ecology of tropical regions is of interest to all the inhabitants of the biosphere. The tropics provide mankind with both the opportunity for and the challenge of essential resources, land for settlement and development, and waters for numerous uses. Moreover, they provide examples of misuse of the landscape, fragility of ecological systems, and serious environmental problems. Unfortunately, the study of the ecology of the tropics has not kept pace with the ecology of other regions. The purpose of this report, therefore, is to determine the research approaches that will lead to advances in our theoretical un derstanding of tropical systems and, more importantly, in the applica tion of that knowledge to human problems. Although the principal focus of the report is on the neotropics, it will be useful to the full spectrum of persons concerned with the tropics around the world government officials, sCientists, students of ecology, and others. TIE is especially pleased to thank the numerous scientists and ad ministrators who participated in the workshop and who contributed to this report. Arthur D. Erscheinungsdatum: 20.09.1974

Principles of wood science and technology 2. Wood based materials / Franz F. P. Kollmann [u. a
Franz F.P. Kollmann, Edward W. Kuenzi, Alfred J. Stamm
Springer; Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, 1975
The principal author published the first edition of a book entitled in German "Technologie des Holzes" (Springer-Verlag) in the year 1936. This book was available only in photostat copy form in the United States during World War n. A translation into the English language was later made in Australia. Due to many hampering factors caused by World War n it was not unti11951 that the second edition of the first volume of book with the enlarged title (translated) "Technology of 'Vood and W ood Based Materials" was published. The se co nd volume followed in 1955. The enormOllS expansion of wood seience and technology within less than two deeade,: is evident from a comparison of the number of pages of these two editions. The first edition eomprises 764 pages, the two volumes of the second edition 2231 pages. More recently, it becamc evident that an English version in a condensed up to-date form was needed. Therefore, the principal author decided to publish a book on "Principles of W ood Science and Technology" in English. The first volume dealt with solid wood, this second volume deals with wood based materials. U sing the ward "Principles" in the title of the condensed book this led directly to abandoning ft11 detailed historie al reviews, explanations, ftnd discussions of mftchines and processes.

Bees As Superorganisms : An Evolutionary Reality
Prof. Dr. Robin F. A. Moritz, Prof. Dr. Edward E. Southwick (auth.)
Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992, PS, 2011
The honeybee (Apis melli/era L. ) is one of the better studied organisms on this planet. There are plenty of books on the biology of the honeybee for all, the scientist, the beekeeper, and the layman. In view of this flood of publications one is tempted to ask: why does it require another one? The answer is simple: a new one is not required and we do not intend to present a new book on "the honeybee". This would really just add some more inches to the already overloaded bookshelf without sub stantial new information. Instead, we intend to present a book on the honeybee colony. This of course immediately releases the next question: so what is the difference? Although the difference may look insignificant at first glance, we try to guide the reader with a fundamentally different approach through the biology of honeybees and eusocial insect societies in general. The biology of individual colony members is only addressed when it is necessary to explain colonial mechanisms, and the colony as a whole, as a biological unit, which is the main focus of this treatise. Both of us felt that all current textbooks on bee biology put too much emphasis on the individual worker, queen or drone in the colony. Often it is com pletely neglected that the colony is a very significant (if not the most significant) biological structure in bee biology.

Moore's paradox : a critique of representationalism / Ulla Schmid.
Moore, George Edward;Schmid, Ulla
De Gruyter, Inc., Quellen und Studien zur Philosophie, v. 124, Berlin/Boston, 2014
The word belief is widely assumed to designate a special class of mental states, the attitude of representing something as being the case. This book provides a critique of representationalism by focusing on the role that psychological concepts play in language, the way in which they are used in practice. Offering an alternative conception of their meaning, it finds a new way to deal with Moore's Paradox.

The Languages and Linguistics of Northern Asia : Language Families
Edward Vajda; José Andrés Alonso de la Fuente; De Gruyter Mouton
De Gruyter Mouton, The World of Linguistics [WOL] 10.1, 2024
The Languages and Linguistics of Northern Asia: A Comprehensive Guide surveys the indigenous languages of Asia's North Pacific Rim, Siberia, and adjacent portions of Inner Eurasia. It provides in-depth descriptions of every first-order family of this vast area, with special emphasis on family-internal subdivision and dialectal differentiation. Individual chapters trace the origins and expansion of the region's widespread pastoral-based language groups as well as the microfamilies and isolates spoken by northern Asia's surviving hunter-gatherers. Separate chapters cover sparsely recorded languages of early Inner Eurasia that defy precise classification and the various pidgins and creoles spread over the region. Other chapters investigate the typology of salient linguistic features of the area, including vowel harmony, noun inflection, verb indexing (also known as agreement), complex morphologies, and the syntax of complex predicates. Issues relating to genealogical ancestry, areal contact and language endangerment receive equal attention. With historical connections both to Eurasia's pastoral-based empires as well as to ancient population movements into the Americas, the steppes, taiga forests, tundra and coastal fringes of northern Asia offer a complex and fascinating object of linguistic investigation.

Geometry And Topology Of Configuration Spaces (springer Monographs In Mathematics)
Edward R. Fadell, Sufian Y. Husseini (auth.)
Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Springer Monographs in Mathematics, Springer Monographs in Mathematics, 1, 2001
The configuration space of a manifold provides the appropriate setting for problems not only in topology but also in other areas such as nonlinear analysis and algebra. With applications in mind, the aim of this monograph is to provide a coherent and thorough treatment of the configuration spaces of Eulidean spaces and spheres which makes the subject accessible to researchers and graduate students with a minimal background in classical homotopy theory and algebraic topology. The treatment regards the homotopy relations of Yang-Baxter type as being fundamental. It also includes a novel and geometric presentation of the classical pure braid group; the cellular structure of these configuration spaces which leads to a cellular model for the associated based and free loop spaces; the homology and cohomology of based and free loop spaces; and an illustration of how to apply the latter to the study of Hamiltonian systems of k-body type.

Springer Spektrum. in Springer-Verlag GmbH, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2012
The task of updating the classification was given to the Classification and Nomenclature Committee of the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists and its four subcommittees. This classification reflects the present state of knowledge and modifications are almost certain to be needed as experience accumulates. Since many of the tumours and tumour-like conditions in the classification occur in several sites in the female genital tract, cross-referencing from one site to another has been done in illustrating these lesions. Modelling of Simplified Dynamical Systems
Edward Layer DSc, PhD (auth.)
Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002, 2012
This book is addressed to scientists, engineers and student of engineering departments, who make use of modelling and computer simulation. Since more and more physical experiments are being replaced by computer simulations the use of mathematical models of various engineering systems has become an especially important area of research. The book is devoted to selected problems of various engineering domains, such as control, electrical engineering or electrical metrology. They are based on different mathematical fields such as matrix theory, differential equations, function approximation with applications in dynamic modelling, methods of simplifying high-order models determining mapping errors of simplified models, their optimization and the synthesis of suitable input signals. The book is easy to read and understand because all the needed mathematical transformations and formula are derived and explained by means of the examples enclosed.
