Life before eighty : autobiography
Erickson, Arvid B.
iUniverse Publishing, Bloomington [Ind, ©2011
xiii, 257 pages : 23 cm "Enthusiasts of telegraphy and railroading will find here events documenting the ongoing development of those industries. His family spent time logging in Hazelhurst, WI. about which he discussed honestly being in a logging family. Students of sociology will be interested in the positions of pioneering women and the hurdles they jumped to care best for their families. In Whitehall, WI, where Arvid spent most of his work life, he describes significant events (eg. world wars, beginning of trucking, bigger/faster steam engines, diesel, telephone) and how they affected the industry and his position, Agent/Telegrapher. In the addendum by Fred J. Rogers, forester, speaks from first hand knowledge of the logging industry in Central Wisconsin and relates the lumber barons scoured the land to make their millions"--Page 4 of cover

Out of the mouths of babes : parenting from a child's perspective
Dyan Eybergen
Iuniverse Publishing, Rev, Bloomington, Ind, ©2011

As a registered nurse working with psychiatric children and adolescents, Dyan Eybergen thought she was trained to handle just about every behavioral situation-until she had her own children. Nothing had prepared her for the intensity of the relationships she would share with her sons-the profound love she would have, the anger she would sometimes feel toward them and, of course, the guilt.

For those who have struggled with parenting strategies that have failed or worked for one child but not another, Out of the Mouths of Babes offers a unique parenting approach tailored to working with the personalities of individual children. While guiding parents to uncover successful solutions to such frustrating child-rearing dilemmas as sleeping through the night, toilet training, and sibling rivalry, Eybergen also helps parents teach their children to feel empowered to acquire new skills, problem solve, manage conflict, and develop a healthy self-esteem.

Out of the Mouths of Babes is an innovative guidebook that offers a new choice for parents who believe there are other alternatives to the one-size-fits-all paradigm of raising children.

Facing the monster : how one person can fight child slavery
Carol Hart Metzker
Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse Inc, Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2012
xv, 139 pages ; 23 cm "An invisible, growing monster roams the streets, preying on millions of innocent victims in the United States and overseas. This monster is child slavery, and it is woven into the very fabric of our daily lives. Because it touches every aspect of our lives, however, it can be addressed and solved. In "Facing the Monster," author Carol Hart Metzker calls attention to the plight of the world's children who live a life of modern slavery. She tells how an unexpected encounter with an eleven-year-old girl led her into the dark world of human trafficking, forced sex trade, and child slavery. Metzker's quest to find hope, to help end slavery, and to aid survivors took her as far as children's shelters in remote villages in India and as close as a special home just miles from her front door in Pennsylvania. "Facing the Monster" narrates the stories of rescued child slaves and paints a poignant picture of the plight of hidden victims worldwide. Metzker's inspiring chronicle reveals the monstrous truths about child slavery, provides an action plan to become an agent of change, and presents solutions to end it. It shows how one person's actions can change the lives of many and that everyone can take a step to fight child slavery."--IUniverse.com Includes bibliographical references

The Smell of Blood
K. Stewart
New York ; Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse, Inc., [Rev. ed.]., New York, Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2009
It seems at least every generation the US has sent young men to war. Although each one has its unique character they all take many young and less experienced men, and now women, and ask them to perform acts of violence only dimly hinted in movies and the media. One thing all wars have in common is the government never prepares itself or their armed forces for the toll it takes on human beings and returning veterans, nor does it consider the impact of homecoming and transition these soldiers are expected to make. Token parades or superficial and transient expressions of appreciation can in no way make up for the price we pay. Many returning veterans have found release in writing, art, family and public service. Many have never found their way home and some never will. These are just some of one man's thoughts and feelings about his experience. Although war is always big business, for those of us that fight it, it is personal.

Poetry for Animals
I.H. Smythe; Illustrated by Sappho
Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse Inc., Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2011
There are millions of books written about animals, but only two books in the world written specifically for animals-and the book Poetry for Animals is one of them.* Of course you may find that when you read these poems to an animal it will look surprised and uncomprehending, but this is not because the animal doesn't understand what you are saying. It is merely because no one has ever taken the trouble to read to it before, and it will only be a matter of time before the animal you are reading to will express its pleasure by purring in your lap, or cavorting gaily about its enclosure, or by gnawing on your skull, or by flying away never to be seen again. Focus-group studies have shown, however, that it is members of your species who tend actually to buy and read books of poems, thus this collection was written specifically with you in mind. * The other is Stories for Animals , available at fine bookstores and from woodland creatures everywhere. Recommended for Homo sapiens age 12+

Virginia Nemetz

To this end she stepped onto the Spirit Path. Stone Child's Mother is a shared quest for wholeness. Chasing love : a mother's journey
Rogosin, Elinor
iUniverse Publishing, Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2011
When a goodbye unexpectedly becomes forever, there is an emptiness that can never be filled. In Chasing Love, author Elinor Rogosin tells her personal story of saying goodbye to her nineteen-year-old son Jonathan as he left New York to travel to India in the summer 1982. She has not seen him since. In this memoir, Rogosin shares her journey of acceptance as she sifts through her family history in the hope of shedding light on her youngest son's dramatic choice of a lifestyle. She recounts her marriage to an independent documentary filmmaker, their travels to foreign countries; the birth of their three sons, the repercussions of her husband's abuse, their divorce, and her attempt to remain close to her boys. Chasing Love probes her relationship with Jonathan, the youngest, and attempts to analyze their clash of ideals as he joins a religious cult and disappears into an unknown world in India. Rogosin narrates a story that's filled with heartache where she takes a painful voyage through loss to acceptance.

Twin Expectations: Raising The Bar, Raising Expectations, Raising Children!
Judge Eileen A. Olds
[Bloomington, Ind.]: iUniverse, Inc., [Bloomington, Ind.], Indiana, 2012
In Twin Expectations , author Judge Eileen A. Olds presents a go-to, how-to, hope-filled guide for reclaiming what matters most--our children. Eileen and her identical twin sister, Francine, a noted gynecologist, were raised by their single mother to defy lowered expectations rather than succumb to them. If society had had its way, neither of them would have succeeded, let alone risen to the top of their professions in such highly-competitive fields. Now combining lessons learned from her mother and her own experiences as a juvenile and family court judge, she shares guiding wisdom and practical advice for children-rearing. Using her personal stories, Twin Expectations provides direction to parents to help their children of all - gain the confidence to make wise choices; - learn to have accountability in all things; - understand the power of purpose; - be resilient; - mind their manners; - become independent sooner; and - value family Advocating love, care, and concern, Twin Expectations provides a fresh vision for parents and all of those concerned about future generations. When Judge Olds throws her book at you, it is one you will want (and need) to catch!

Willette Kotan : a backward glance
Sheldon, John
Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse Inc., Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2011
Willette A Backward Glance presents glimpses into some of the world's most beautiful settings while reminding the reader that every destination has its unique personality. From Richard Wright's abbreviated summation on racism in the United States to a reexamination of the fundamentalist view of Buddhism, Willette Kotan's travel notes on living life to the fullest will inspire and educate. This biographical volume includes travel notes about some of the most beautiful locations a tourist can explore. Within Kotan's journal are historical tidbits and abbreviated philosophical notes relating her thoughts on her sights and experiences. In the course of her adventures, there are many passages that incorporate humor along with the facts-a memorable combination. More than just a biography and travel log, this book portrays Willette Kotan's everyday and yet extraordinary life. Presented by her brother, John Sheldon, it relates her observations, insights, and worldviews, both to tell her story and in hopes that they may offer a broadened perspective on the world and its inhabitants. The reader will find the index by classification a list of celebrity quotes, aspects of unfair government farming policies, a viewpoint of racism as expressed by Richard Wright in 1945, the reading process as well as other topics of interest outside of travel.

viii, 298 pages ; 23 cm "Upon returning from Afghanistan, journalist John Webster discovers a gang war in his backyard. Now he must find a way to survive in this Canadian warzone-- or die in the crossfire. John Webster has seen the terrible things human beings can do. He's an experienced investigative journalist, recently returned from the war in Afghanistan. John saw hell over there; he looked death straight in the face. He is glad to be back to the normalcy of his Canadian home-- that is, until he realizes there is a war brewing in his own backyard, and 'peace' is a word no longer spoken. John gets caught up in the battle between two of the most powerful and murderous criminal gangs in the city. Using what he learned on the foreign battlefields, he stays alive, despite the price on his head. The only way to save his own life is to find the man responsible for the brutal neighborhood bloodshed. When the police slap a subpoena on him, though, John finds his only solace on the streets. Suddenly, John is back in a warzone, fighting for his life. Will he be able to stop the bloodthirsty crime lords? The flashbacks to Afghanistan threaten to pull John into darkness. Soon, the past and present collide, and he can't tell which way is up or down. The need for redemption may be stronger than the need for survival as John Webster finds himself on his most dangerous assignment yet"--Page 4 of cover "Upon returning from Afghanistan, journalist John Webster discovers a gang war in his backyard. Out of the box : the mostly true story of a mysterious man
Morse, Julie C.
Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse Inc, Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2012

Young Julianna was different from the other kids. She suffered from a strange form of arthritis that sometimes left her hurting and bedridden for days a time. But she never let it stop her from living life to the fullest - thanks largely to the secret weapon she had in her Uncle Bob.

When she was little, Uncle Bob filled Julianna's head with positive thoughts - while filling her room with wild souvenirs from his exotic world travels. There was the painted wolf skull from Siberia; a jagged, blood-stained rock from Mount Everest; and a faceless voodoo doll from Africa. He whetted her appetite for adventure and convinced her that nothing was beyond her reach. Then, when she was sixteen, he invited her along on his far-flung adventures. To the teenager, Uncle Bob was Superman and James Bond combined. But even as she grew up to realize that he wasn't really magic, there was something magical about her favorite uncle.

Bob Harris lived life by his own rules, and it took him on great adventures and to the heights of success. Parts of that life were also shrouded in mystery. Now nearing eighty, he reveals his true identity to his beloved Julianna - imparting wisdom, inspiration, strength, and some real surprises, too. Bob's story is a testament to the power of the American dream - and to his personal passion to live life boldly.

My side of the story : an Iowan relates his World War II experiences
G. Warren Collier and Judy Collier Johnson
Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse, Inc., Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2012
My Side of the Story shares a narrative of G. Warren Collier's World War II experiences in the western European theater, as told to his daughter, Judy Collier Johnson. He shares the intimate detail of what it was like to be in the army during World War II through a series of letters and recollections. Collier, a young man from a simple Iowa farm, found himself in an army plagued by rules and regulations. After advanced training at Camp Roberts, California, in the desert, he received his marching orders and was sent first to England and then to Omaha Beach. As a private serving the company commander as his driver, he was privy to the ways the army operated, which were frequently unorganized at best. Many times, Collier and his commander took a command car on dangerous scouting expeditions. At the same time he was driving for the commander, he was also serving as the company clerk since he was the only man in his company who could type. Th rough his work, he became acquainted with ordinary soldiers and spent as much time with them as possible. My Side of the Story paints a picture of lives of everyday soldiers during World War II and the joys and heartaches they shared.

Educating voters for rebuilding America with national goals and balanced budget in this decade
Jackie E. Bowsher
Iuniverse Publishing, Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2011
NATIONAL CRISIS IN LEADERSHIP Ten years ago, our nation was on the right road to fiscal stability with four years of surpluses totaling $560 billion. Unfortunately, private and public sector senior executives made serious mistakes during the past decade, resulting in our federal government being on the road to a financial meltdown. This could lead to a long-term and deep economic depression like the 1930s. In Educating Voters for Rebuilding America, Jack Bowsher takes a deep, investigative look into how Americans can turn the country around. To avoid many tax increases being discussed in Washington, DC, Bowsher argues that there must be systemic changes in many areas of our government and in the free enterprise system. Only then will Americans enjoy economic prosperity, higher employment levels, affordable education systems, a balanced budget, a modern, nation-wide energy system, and much more. Bowsher describes how these national goals can be achieved in this decade by implementing the required systemic changes, and also shows how Social Security and Medicare benefits can be affordable in future years. Voters must be educated on the major issues and challenges facing our nation. Only they have the power to end the civil war between our two political parties by electing qualified candidates in the White House and Congress in 2012. Educate yourself today!

Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse Inc., Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2011
It is 1963 at Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, as young intern John Deaton dashes madly through the corridors. Overwhelmed yet invigorated by his new challenge, Deaton soon realizes that an intern's life can be exemplary one moment-and hopeless the next. Unfortunately, Deaton has no idea that he is about to witness an event that will change his life forever. It is a hot summer day when Maria, one of Deaton's OB/ GYN patients, slips into a coma after mysterious abdominal pain-even after she delivers a healthy baby. Exasperated after repeatedly expressing his concerns for her care to his superiors, Deaton is devastated as he watches his crucially ill patient suffer death by neglect, an unthinkable crime brazenly covered up by those in authority. As Deaton details his early life and hospital events, he highlights a shocking phenomenon present behind the White Curtain that tells a story as powerful as it is important. This thoughtful, gripping memoir portrays an untold side of the field of medicine and relays an unforgettable when a doctor sacrifices everything to save a patient, the doctor is saved too.

Hello! My name Is Public School, and I have an image problem : a step-by-step guide to strengthening public conficence in your schools
Leslie Milder and Jane Braddock; foreward by Linda Rutherford
Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse, Inc., Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2012

So much energy is focused on what's wrong with our public schools and how to fix them that we often lose sight of the extraordinary work occurring in our schools every day, thanks to millions of caring, dedicated professional educators who work hard to ensure every student reaches their potential.

In Hello! My Name is Public School and I Have an Image Problem, authors and teachers Leslie Milder and Jane Braddock provide a solution for educators who wish to strengthen public confidence in their public schools. They share commonsense techniques on how schools and their employees can establish themselves as ambassadors who convey a positive message. This book enunciates a step-by-step approach to challenging the unjust criticism and accusations of failure by directing the energies of those who work in our schools to step up as ambassadors for America's public schools and the children they serve.

The authors underscore the power of professional unity and its profoundly positive impact on the profession, and why a culture of brotherhood is an essential element of any successful organization. The forces that weaken public trust and confidence in public education are discussed at length, as well as strategies for restoring public pride, hope, optimism, and confidence in our public schools and in those who dedicate their lives to educating our youth.

Beyond basketballs : the new revolutionary way to build a successful business in a post-product world

Bloomington, Ind.: Iuniverse Inc., Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2010
xxiii, 144 p. ; 22 cm "It's been more than ten years since the first edition of this book was published under the title of The Strategic Enterprise. Since then, so much has happened. 9/11. Two wars. The election of Barack Obama. The growth of wireless technology. Facebook. YouTube. iPhones. And many, many other changes" -- Preface "For the past 200 years, we've build companies around specific products and services," Bishop says. "But that product-first model is no obsolete due to accelerating change, increasing competition, and instant communication. Companies that keep using these old models will fail to grow, and may even go out of business all together. To be successful in this new environment, you need to use a new post-product business model, one built around relationships, not products. this model, while simple in its structure, is revolutionary because it creates a completely different kind of company; an enterprise that prospers because it takes advantage of accelerating change, increasing competition, and instant communication" -- P. Joyce, queen of the mountain : female courage and hand-to-hand combat in the world's largest money pit
by Joyce Selander
Iuniverse Publishing, Bloomington, Ind, Indiana, 2011
This memoir narrates the inspiring story of the first woman to physically trade financial futures in the pits at the Chicago Board of Trade. It takes many skills to be a good bond trader. You have to have an ego and great nerve, and you must be smart, quick, and mentally strong. You have to learn from your mistakes, you have to know when to have patience, and you have to be physical. Author Joyce Selander has all of these. At barely five foot five and110 pounds dripping wet, she ventured into the hand to- hand, financial combat every day for thirteen years as the first woman to physically trade financial futures in the pits at the Chicago Board of Trade. In this memoir, she tells of standing toe-to-toe with five hundred shouting, sweating, testosterone-hyped male traders all trying to reach the top of the financial mountain. Through her work, Selander met diplomats and US presidents; dated secret service agents; and saw murder, mayhem, and a personal plot to overthrow the Taliban, and 9/11. Joyce, Queen of the Mountain provides an insider's look at the workings of the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and gives insights into the strategies and styles of its key players. A story of ethics, innovation, and visionary leadership, it narrates the inspiring memoir of one woman who rose to the top of her profession.

Motorcycle adventurer : Carl Stearns Clancy : first motorcyclist to ride around the world 1912-1913
Frazier, Dr. Gregory W.
Bloomington, Ind.: iUniverse Inc., New York ; Bloomington IL, c2010
"The longest, most difficult, and most perilous motorcycle journey ever attempted." The Bicycling World and Motorcycle Review "Anyone who desires to diverge from the beaten path and visit points that may be of peculiar interest to him personally, the motorcycle is undoubted the only satisfactory means of travel." Syracuse Herald "One must die sometime and to die with one's boots on is very noble." Carl Stearns Clancy while riding his motorcycle at night in Spain, 1913. This travelogue originally authored by Clancy is for the avid motorcycle adventurist, the travel dreamer thirsting for motorcycle touring. Clancy circled the globe during 1912-1913 on a 1912 motorcycle. There were no GPSs, ATMs, Internet, and often no gas, roads or motorcycle repair shops. It describes the first motorcycle global adventure ride by the man who survived a dream quest with his gun, determination, grit, and guts. Edited by author Dr. Gregory W. Frazier, "America's #1 extreme motorcycle adventurer," who has raced, ridden, and repaired motorcycles over 1,000,000 miles and five times around the world. Best-selling author, journalist, film producer and professional photographer, Frazier's works include 14 books and 10 films. He says of motorcycle adventures, "I hate adventure that involves snakes or sharks."
