Russia in the Context of Global Transformations: Capitalism and Communism, Culture and Revolution (Studies in Critical Social Sciences, 240) Aleksandr Buzgalin, Lyudmila Bulavka-Buzgalina, Andrey Kolganov, Renfrey Clarke (translator) Brill Academic Pub, Studies in critical social sciences, volume 240, Leiden, 2023
"In Russia in the Context of Global Transformations (Capitalism and Communism, Culture and Revolution), the authors focus on the dramatic changes in Russia's socio-economic system over the past hundred years. The contradictions of Russia's triumphs and tragedies are studied in connection with the shifts in the world economic system. Basing themselves on the views of the Post-Soviet School of Critical Marxism, the authors show the causes and consequences of the main shifts in Russia's development during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Topics addressed include the October Revolution, the contradictions of post-revolutionary development, the disintegration of the USSR, the collapse and stagnation during the post-USSR period and the prospects for overcoming contemporary problems"-- Provided by publisher

nexusstc/Trajectories in Near Eastern Apocalyptic: A Postrabbinic Jewish Apocalypse Reader/af04cfc29ba9cd553561b6bf022cd342.pdf
Trajectories in Near Eastern Apocalyptic: A Postrabbinic Jewish Apocalypse Reader (Resources for Biblical Study (Brill Academic Publishers), No. 45.) (Resources ... Biblical Study (Brill Academic Publishers)) John C. Reeves (Editor) Brill Academic Publishers, Resources for biblical study (Brill Academic Publishers), no. 45, Leiden, 2006

Modern treatments of Jewish apocalyptic usually terminate their discussions of this literature with the triumph of Rome over nationalist rebels at the time of the Second Jewish Revolt (132-135 CE). They hence fail to appreciate the impact of the subsequent rise of scriptural authority for the Abrahamic religions and the renewed vitality of the apocalyptic genre as a favored literary vehicle for the expression of social and cultural concerns by the major Near Eastern religious communities during the second half of the first millennium CE. The present volume begins the process of righting this imbalance by providing an English-language anthology of a series of influential Jewish apocalypses emanating from the Near East from roughly the early seventh to the mid-twelfth centuries CE. Each text is newly translated into English and provided with an annotated commentary that elucidates its historical, literary, and religious contexts.

Paperback edition is available from the Society of Biblical Literature (www.sbl-site.org).

Retroverting Slavonic Pseudepigrapha: Toward The Original Of The Apocalypse Of Abraham (Text-Critical Studies (Brill Academic Publishers), V. 3.) (Text-Critical ... Studies (Brill Academic Publishers), V. 3.) Alexander Kulik Brill Academic Pub, Text-critical studies (Brill Academic Publishers), v. 3, Leiden, 2005
This work is the first systematic attempt to apply retroversion to Slavonic pseudepigrapha. Slavonic literary tradition preserved translations of many important documents of ancient religious thought. The elaboration of principles and tools for the retroversion of these writings is critical for the proper understanding of the originals. This study contains a new translation of the Apocalypse of Abraham and is organized formally as a discussion of separate problematic segments of the text, classified according to the type of the retroverted phenomena. It will be of interest to those studying Jewish literature of the Second Temple period, early Christianity, history of religious thought, medieval Slavonic literature and linguistics, and ancient and medieval translation techniques.

"This book offers the first comprehensive study of the ways in which China's men of guns (so-called "warlords") and men of letters (May Fourth intellectuals) engaged one another for the making of a Chinese federation between 1919 and 1923. Breaking the constructed dichotomy between the men of guns and men of letters, Vivienne Guo's analysis reappraises Chinese warlordism against the backdrop of the Chinese enlightenment. Exploring the ideological underpinnings and political vigour of the Chinese federalist movement, Negotiating A Chinese Federation provides a fresh interpretation of China's cultural renewal and state-building"-- Provided by publisher

Brill's Companions to European History 11: A Companion to Sardinian History, 500–1500 Michelle Hobart Brill Academic Publishers, 10.1163/9789004341241, Brill's Companions to European History 11, 2017 aug 24
The first English-language survey of medieval and modern Sardinia, this volume offers access to long-awaited European scholarship on a critical missing link in the Mediterranean. Based on new archaeological fieldwork and current research from a variety of academic perspectives— architecture, colonialism, ecclesiastic history, cartography, demography, law, musicology, politics, trade, and urban planning—the authors provide the foundation to incorporate Sardinia into a broader European history. Among other contributions, archaeology adds critical insight into the relationship between Christian, Muslim, and Jewish inhabitants of Sardinia, through examinations of urban and rural settlement patterns. This volume aims to stimulate further analysis of the critical role Sardinia has played as one of the largest and most strategically located islands in the Mediterranean.Contributors are Laura Biccone, Nathalie Bouloux, Henri Bresc, Marco Cadinu, Roberto Coroneo, Laura Galoppini, Henrike Haug, Michelle Hobart, Rossana Martorelli, Giampaolo Mele, Marco Milanese, Giovanni Murgia, Gian Giacomo Ortu, Daniela Rovina, Olivetta Schena, Cecilia Tasca, Raimondo Turtas, and Corrado Zedda.

Shulamit and Margarete: Power, Gender, and Religion in a Rural Society in Eighteenth-Century Europe (Studies in Central European Histories) Claudia Ulbrich Brill Academic Publishers; Brill, Brill Academic Publishers, [N.p.], 2021

Shulamit and Margarete takes a microhistorical look at a small village on the border of Germany and France in the eighteenth century. Drawing on the rich source material of the village, it casts a searching light on the boundaries created by language, states, religions, cultures, sex, and gender. By writing the history of the village from multiple perspectives, the author is able to uncover fascinating artefacts of a cultural contact between Christians and Jews, and to gain insights into the agency and experiences of women in rural society. The book is enhanced by a variety of sources and illustrations relating to Jewish history, such as the last will of Abraham Levy and the previously unknown portraits of Fromette Levy and Bernard Lipmann.

Transforming the Void: Embryological Discourse and Reproductive Imagery in East Asian Religions (Sir Henry Wellcome Asian, 16) edited by Anna Andreeva and Dominic Steavu Koninklijke Brill N.V., Sir Henry Wellcome Asian series (Brill Academic Publishers), volume 16, Leiden, 2015
Transforming the Void: Embryological Discourse and Reproductive Imagery in East Asian Religions considers paths to self-cultivation and salvation that are patterned on human embryological development or procreative imagery in the religions of China and Japan. Focusing on Taoism, Esoteric Buddhism, Shinto, Shugendō, and local religious traditions, the contributors to the volume provide new insight into how the body's generative processes are harnessed as powerful metaphors for spiritual attainment. This volume offers an in-depth examination of the religious dimensions of embryology and reproductive imagery, topics that have been hitherto solely approached through the lens of the history of medicine. Contributors include: Brigitte Baptandier, Catherine Despeux, Grégoire Espesset, Christine Mollier, Fabrizio Pregadio, Dominic Steavu, Lucia Dolce, Bernard Faure, Iyanaga Nobumi, Anna Andreeva, Kigensan Licha, Gaynor Sekimori.

nexusstc/Group Politics in UN Multilateralism (Diplomatic Studies, 16)/61592e6e6e38c61549217c1c73c3918d.pdf
Group Politics in UN Multilateralism (Diplomatic Studies, 16) Karen Elizabeth Smith; Katie Verlin Laatikainen; Brill Academic Publishers Brill | Nijhoff, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2020
Winner of the 2020 Friends of ACUNS Biennial Book Award Group Politics in UN Multilateralism provides a new perspective on diplomacy and negotiations at the United Nations. Very few states ‘act individually'at the UN; instead they often work within groups such as the Africa Group, the European Union or the Arab League. States use groups to put forward principled positions in an attempt to influence a wider audience and thus legitimize desired outcomes. Yet the volume also shows that groups are not static: new groups emerge in multilateral negotiations on issues such as climate, security and human rights. At any given moment, UN multilateralism is shaped by long-standing group dynamics as well as shifting, ad-hoc groupings. These intergroup dynamics are key to understanding diplomatic practice at the UN.

Painting Nature for the Nation: Taki Katei and the Challenges to Sinophile Culture in Meiji Japan (Japanese Visual Culture) Buckland, Rosina; Brill Academic Publishers, Japanese visual culture, Leiden, Biggleswade, 2012
In Painting Nature for the Nation: Taki Katei and the Challenges to Sinophile Culture in Meiji Japan , Rosina Buckland offers an account of the career of the painter Taki Katei (1830-1901). Drawing on a large body of previously unpublished paintings, collaborative works and book illustrations by this highly successful, yet neglected, figure, Buckland traces how Katei transformed his art and practice based in modes derived from China in order to fulfil the needs of the modern nation-state at large-scale exhibitions and at the imperial court. She provides a rare examination of the vibrant world of Chinese-inspired culture during the 1880s, and the hostility which it faced in the following decade.

Non-Flag State Enforcement in High Seas Fisheries (Publications on Ocean Development, V. 46) Rosemary Rayfuse, R. G. Rayfuse Brill Academic Publishers Brill Academic Publishers [distributor, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2004

This book is the first comprehensive examination of state practice relating to enforcement by non-flag states of the high seas conservation and management measures adopted by Regional Fisheries Organisations. Moving beyond the issue of the implementation of the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, it demonstrates an emerging exception, in customary international law, to the rule of primacy of flag state jurisdiction in the high seas fisheries context and delineates the parameters in which this emerging exception allowing for non-flag jurisdiction may be exercised. This book contains extensive factual descriptions of state practice as well as comprehensive legal analyses of that practice.

Ontologies of Violence: Deconstruction, Pacifism, and Displacement (Political and Public Theologies, 4) Maxwell Kennel Koninklijke Brill N.V., Political and Public Theologies, 4, 2023
Through interpretations of Jacques Derrida’s early work, the philosophical turn in twenty-first century Mennonite pacifist theology, and Grace Jantzen’s feminist critique of violence, this book provides a critical theory that neither abandons the concept of violence to subjectivity, nor fixes it in place.

Hollow Men, Strange Women: Riddles, Codes and Otherness in the Book of Judges (Biblical Interpretation Series, 143) Robin Baker [Baker, Robin] Brill Academic Publishers, Biblical interpretation series, VOLUME 143, Leiden, 2016
In Hollow Men, Strange Women, Robin Baker provides a masterly reappraisal of Israel's experience during its Settlement of Canaan as narrated in the Book of Judges. Written under Assyrian suzerainty in the reign of Manasseh, Judges is both a theological commentary on the Settlement and an esoteric work of prophecy. Its apparent historicity subtly encrypts a grim forewarning of Judah's future, and, in its extensive treatment of otherness, Judges explores the meaning of God’s covenant with Israel. Robin Baker's scholarly and perceptive reading draws on a deep understanding of ancient Hebrew and Mesopotamian symbolic codes to interpret the riddles in this many-layered text. The Book of Judges reveals complex literary configurations from which past, present, and future are simultaneously presented. (Publisher).

El in the Ugaritic Texts (Vetus Testamentum, Supplements, 2) Marvin H. Pope Brill Academic Publishers, Supplements to Vetus Testamentum 2, 1955
The author of this study has become favorably known for a number of good essays and some excellent papers read before the American Oriental Society. His work stands in pleasing contrast to many studies in the field of Ugaritic religion and mythology, which tend to lack linguistic control of the texts — an absolutely necessary prerequisite in dealing with a language still in the process of being interpreted grammatically and lexically. For instance, one scholar overlooks basic phonetic considerations, disregarding a century of serious scientific work in this field. Another may respect phonetic requirements, but tries to identify obscure words with words taken ad hoc from the dictionary of Classical Arabic, without paying attention to cognates in the other languages or to the history of the word-groups in question. A third forgets that translations from Ugaritic texts must make sense in the light of our present knowledge of the ancient East.

Synagonism: Theory and Practice in Early Modern Art Yannis Hadjinicolaou, Joris van Gastel, Markus Rath Brill Academic Pub, Brill Academic Publishers, [N.p.], 2024
The present volume explores for the first time the concept of synagonism (from "σύν", "together" and "ἀγών", "struggle") for an analysis of the productive exchanges between early modern painting, sculpture, architecture, and other art forms in theory and practice. In doing so, it builds on current insights regarding the so-called paragone debate, seeing this, however, as only one, too narrow perspective on early modern artistic production. -Synagonism, rather, implies a breaking up of the schematic connections between art forms and individual senses, drawing attention to the multimediality and intersensoriality of art, as well as the relationship between image and body.

Religions in Antiquity: Essays in Memory of Erwin Ramsdell Goodenough (Studies in the History of Religions) Erwin R Goodenough; Jacob Neusner Brill Academic Publishers,Netherlands, Studies in the History of Religions, 14, New edition, 1970
These essays were originally intended for presentation to Professor Erwin Ramsdell Goodenough on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. Before his death, in March, 1965, he knew of our plans for this volume and was gladdened by them.... The editor hopes that these papers, many of which fruitfully utilize Goodenough's scholarship, may contribute to the critical discussion of some problems of concern to him during his lifetime. He can conceive no higher, nor more appropriate, act of reverence for the memory of a beloved teacher and friend. From the Foreword by Jacob Neusner

May 1940: The Battle for the Netherlands (History of Warfare (Brill)) Hermanus Amersfoort; Piet H. Kamphuis Brill Academic Publishers, 1, 2010
In May 1940, the Netherlands were overrun by German armed forces. The five-day campaign might seem to be a prime example of Blitzkrieg, which led shortly afterwards to the rapid and unexpected overthrow of France. This book, based on the newest scholarly research, argues that this is too simple a view. Even though the German assault on the Netherlands made use of tanks, aircraft and airborne troops, it was still a classic campaign against a weak opponent in a theater on the margins of Fall Gelb. In many instances, artillery and infantry were the decisive factors and it is debatable whether the bombing of Rotterdam can be seen as a precursor to the aerial terror campaigns against civilian populations that marked the later stages the Second World War. Contributors are H. Amersfoort, H.W. van den Doel, P.H. Kamphuis, P.M.J. de Koster, C.M. Schulten and J.W.M. Schulten.**

The Tools of Asclepius: Surgical Instruments in Greek and Roman Times (Studies in Ancient Medicine, 43) (English and Ancient Greek Edition) Lawrence Bliquez [Bliquez, Lawrence] Brill Academic Publishers, Studies in Ancient Medicine, 1, 2014
With The Tools of Asclepius Lawrence Bliquez offers the first comprehensive treatment in English of the instruments and paraphernalia employed by Greco-Roman surgeons since John St. Milne's Surgical Instruments in Greek and Roman Times (1907). Introductory sections cover topics ranging from literary and archaeological sources to the design, materials and production of instruments and the training and practice of the doctors-surgeons who used them. Summaries of Hippocratic and Hellenistic surgery lead to the meat of the book: tools used during the Roman Empire. These are presented by category (e.g. Cutting Instruments) broken into subcategories (Scalpel, Lithotome, et cetera). A substantial appendix deals with biodegradable items, such as suppositories. Much new material is featured and the book is richly illustrated

The 25th volume of Research in the Social Scientific Study of Religion continues to provide readers with an interdisciplinary assortment of high quality research studies aimed at capturing salient, contemporary trends in the field. The current volume presents a special section examining the role of spiritual and religious themes in sexuality research. Engaging analyses evaluate homonegativity and how religious advocacy influences perceptions of gay and lesbian individuals across different cultures. Also included are papers on the development of sexual identities among religious committed individuals. These papers help to connect concepts too frequently considered unrelated. The regular articles provide similarly stimulating evaluations of timely topics such as religious coping, gratitude, and the role of personality in describing religious experiences.
