The meaning of stoicism
Ludwig Edelstein
Cambridge: Published for Oberlin College by Harvard University Press, Martin classical lectures,, v. 21, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1966
"As the ancients themselves knew, Stoicism was not a uniform doctrine. Throughout the centuries there existed factions; the Stoics treasured their independence of judgment and quarreled among themselves." Yet, "despite their individual differences, the Stoic dissenters remained Stoics. That which they had in common, that which made them Stoics, is what I understand as the meaning of Stoicism." Thus delimiting his framework, Ludwig Edelstein attempts to define Stoicism by grasping the elusive common element that bound together the various factions within the ethical system. He begins this exemplary essay with a description of the Stoic sage--the ideal aimed at by Zeno and his followers--which establishes the basic characteristics of the philosophy. Mr. Edelstein then proceeds to a more detailed examination, discussing the Stoic concepts of nature and living in accord with nature; the internal criticism of the second and first centuries B.C., which indicates the limitations and possibilities inherent in the doctrine; the Stoic's way of life and his attitude toward practical affairs, revealing the values cherished by the adherents of the Stoa; and, finally, the place of Stoicism in the history of philosophy

Tusculanae disputationes
with an English translation by J.E. King, LITT. D
Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, Loeb classical library. Latin authors, Loeb classical library -- 141., Cambridge, MA, Massachusetts, 1966
(https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/cicero) Cicero composed these discourses while in his villa in Tusculum as he was mourning the death of his daughter, in order to convey his philosophy of how to live wisely and well. They take the form of fictional dialogues between Cicero and his friends, with each one focusing on a particular Stoic theme. The first, “On the Contempt of Death,” reminds us that mortality is nothing to be upset about. The second, “On Bearing Pain,” reassures us that philosophy is a balm for pains of the body. The third and fourth, “On Grief of Mind” and “Other Perturbations of the Mind,” say that this extends also to mental anguish and unrest. The last, “Whether Virtue Alone Be Sufficient for a Happy Life,” tells us that the key to happiness is already in our hands: it is not to rely on accidents of fate, but on our own efforts in areas of life that are under our own control.

Planning Without Facts : Lessons in Resource Allocation from Nigeria's Development. With an Input-Output Analysis of the Nigerian Economy, 1959-60
Wolfgang F. Stolper; Nicholas G. Carter
Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Publications Written Under the Auspices of the Center for International Affairs, Harvard University, reprint 2014, 1966
As Head of the Economic Planning Unit of Nigeria from 1960 to 1962, Wolfgang Stolper was largely responsible for formulating a plan for the economic development of that country. But his book is not primarily about Nigeria. Extensively illustrated by specific data, it offers valuable insights into the process of making resource allocation decisions in any developing country. The author demonstrates how theoretical concepts can best be put to use in real situations where time, staff, and information are strictly limited, and argues that profitability is the best criterion for investment.

On knowing: essays for the left hand
Jerome S. Bruner
Cambridge: Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, Massachusetts, 1966
The left hand has traditionally represented the powers of intuition, feeling, and spontaneity. In this classic book, Jerome Bruner inquires into the part these qualities play in determining how we know what we do know; how we can help others to know-that is, to teach; and how our conception of reality affects our actions and is modified by them. The striking and subtle discussions contained in On Knowing take on the core issues concerning man's sense of self: creativity, the search for identity, the nature of aesthetic knowledge, myth, the learning process, and modem-day attitudes toward social controls, Freud, and fate. In this revised, expanded edition, Bruner comments on his personal efforts to maintain an intuitively and rationally balanced understanding of human nature, taking into account the odd historical circumstances which have hindered academic psychology's attempts in the past to know man. - Publisher.

Changing Views on British History: Essays on Historical Writing Since 1939
Elizabeth Chapin Furber
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Ma, 1966
τJA.Ν 1 9 5 7 the Conference on British Studies de-cided to sponsor a series of bibliographical articles which should benot exhaustive bibliographies but rather essays on the most significantdevelopments in the field of British history since about 1939, emphasiz-ing new interpretations and indicating problems still awaiting con-sideration. After the articles had appeared in a number of learnedjournals, the sponsors felt that it would be desirable to reprint themin one volume.A hasty reading of these essays will show that the authors have vari-ously interpreted their mandate. Some have confined their attentionlargely to books published since 1939, while others have analyzed avast amount of periodical literature. Some have treated their period inbroad, sweeping strokes, while others have used a more meticuloustechnique. The editor did not wish to impose a rigid scheme of ap-proach. Yet from these articles certain common lines of development inthe historiography of the past twenty-five years appear.

To the Maginot Line: The Politics of French Military Preparation in the 1920’s (Harvard Historical Monographs)
Judith M. Hughes
Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Harvard historical monographs, v. 64, 1st Harvard University Press pbk. ed, Cambridge, Mass, 2006
“[A] stimulating and excellently documented book...Individual personalities are particularly well handled. Foch and Pétain, Poincaré and Blum—all emerge with veritable life in them. The trends of French interwar history are deftly carried through onto these pages with an unobtrusive lucidity and persuasiveness.”—Michael Hurst, American Historical Review“Admirable...Instead of working backward from 1940, seeking causes and culprits of collapse in the 1930s, Ms. Hughes has wisely chosen to begin in 1918 and to focus upon the 1920s. This chronology has given her a fresher perspective and a wider scope for sympathy than other commentators of the period. It is the great merit of this book that it passes judgments with compassion and restraint. Indeed, Professor Hughes insists upon viewing French military policy in the broadest possible context of international developments, domestic politics, economic problems, and intellectual moods; from these elements, she weaves a dilemma of tragic dimensions in which the confusions and mistakes of individuals are reviewed with kindness and realism.”—Charles C. Bright, Political Science QuarterlyThe decision to fortify northeastern France has usually been considered a tragic mistake, an example of bad planning and missed opportunities. Not so, says Judith M. Hughes, who provides a convincing view of how France's military and political leaders tried to safeguard their nation—and why they failed.

As Sean Mcmeekin Reveals In This Startling Reinterpretation Of The War, It Was Neither The British Nor The French But Rather A Small Clique Of Germans And Turks Who Thrust The Islamic World Into The Conflict For Their Own Political, Economic, And Military Ends. The Berlin-baghdad Express Tells The Fascinating Story Of How Germany Exploited Ottoman Pan-islamism In Order To Destroy The British Empire, Then The Largest Islamic Power In The World. Meanwhile The Young Turks Harnessed Themselves To German Military Might To Avenge Turkey's Hereditary Enemy, Russia.
