Phenomenology of spirit / by G. W. F. Hegel ; translated by A. V. Miller ; with analysis of the text and foreword by J. N. Findlay. Hegel, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich, 1770-1831. Clarendon Press, 1977., A Galaxy book, Oxford [England, 1977
Perhaps one of the most revolutionary works of philosophy ever written, "The Phenomenology of Spirit" is Hegel's 1807 work that is in numerous ways extraordinary. It begins with a Preface, written after the rest of the manuscript was completed, that explains the core of his method and what sets it apart from any preceding philosophy. The Introduction, written before the rest of the work, summarizes and completes Kant's ideas on skepticism by rendering it moot and encouraging idealism and self-realization. The body of the work is divided into six sections of varying length, entitled Consciousness, Self-Consciousness, Reason, Spirit, Religion, and Absolute Knowledge. A myriad of topics are discussed, and explained in such a harmoniously complex way that the method has been termed Hegelian dialectic. Ultimately, the work as a whole is a remarkable study of the mind's growth from its direct awareness to scientific philosophy, proving to be a difficult yet highly influential and enduring work.

P. Vergili Maronis Aeneidos, liber sextus : with a commentary / by R. G. Austin. Virgil. Clarendon Press, 1977., Oxford, England, 1977
<p>"Virgilian studies in England were raised to a new plane with the publication of R.G. Austin's commentary on <b>Aeneid</b> II (1964). His <b>Aeneid</b> IV (1955) had given a slightly meagre foretaste of the riches to be revealed in the editions of <b>Aeneid</b> II, I (1971), and VI. Austin's contribution to our understanding of the <b>Aeneid</b> now stands comparision with Heinze's or Norden's."—<b>Journal of Roman Studies</b>. "Throughout, Austin's characteristic sensitivity and refined judgement combine with careful scholarship to present a balanced, sound commentary on this most difficult and crucial book of Virgil's epic poem."—<b>Classical World</b>.</p>

Euthyphro, Apology of Socrates, and Crito (Clarendon Greek Text with English Notes) Plato, John Burnet (Editor) Clarendon Press, Oxford, United States, 1977
These new translations present Plato's remarkable dramatization of the momentous events surrounding the trial of Socrates in 399 BC, on charges of irreligion and corrupting the young. The Euthyphro, Defence of Socrates, and Crito form a dramatic and thematic sequence, raising fundamental questions about the basis of moral, religious, legal, and political obligation. Plato explores these issues with a freshness and directness that have never been surpassed. In the Defence of Socrates, Plato seeks not only to clear his master's name, but also to defend the whole Socratic way of life, and therefore philosophy itself. The Euthyphro, an inquiry into the nature of piety, probes the relationship between religion and morality. The Crito discusses the citizen's obligation to the state, in the context of a life-or-death issue confronting Socrates himself - whether or not to escape from prison. David Gallop's Introduction provides a stimulating philosophical and historical analysis of these timeless classics, complemented by useful explanatory notes and an index of names.

The late Right Reverend Monsignor Ronald A. Knox was Catholic Chaplain at Oxford University from 1926 to 1939 and domestic prelate to His Holiness Pope Pius XII in 1936. He was an honorary fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, editor of The Holy Bible: An Abridgement and Rearrangement, as well as translator of both the Old and New Testaments.

A History Of Greece To 322 B.c. by N. G. L. Hammond, 2d ed Clarendon; Oxford University Press; Clarendon Press, Oxford [Eng.], New York, England, 1981
This new edition of a well-known history of ancient Greece presents a modern interpretation of Greek ideas, culture, and history. Although the book's primary focus is on the political and military history of the Greek states, the prehistoric period and the intellectual, social, and economic backgrounds are also covered. N.G.L. Hammond's work thoroughly documents its ancent sources, and directs readers to further studies in the field. Updated and revised, the third edition adds new material on the significance of the spread of tumulus-burial in Albainia and the Mycenaean world, the dating of early coinage, the decree of Themistocles, and on aspects of the rule of Alexander the Great. Wide-ranging in scope, yet rich in detail, this work adds a modern perspective to the study of a fascinating ancient culture.

Blake books supplement : a bibliography of publications and discoveries about William Blake, 1971-1992, being a continuation of Blake books (1977) Bentley, G. E., Jr. (Gerald Eades), 1930-; Bentley, G. E., Jr. (Gerald Eades), 1930- Blake books Oxford [England]: Clarendon Press ; New York: Oxford University Press, Oxford [England], New York, England, 1995
A continuation of Blake Books (1977)--a bibliographical record of publications covering all aspects of William Blake's life and work, including his writings, drawings, and engravings, as well as works of criticism on them--this supplement picks up where Blake Books left off. The mass of new material is enormous, as the last 20 years have produced almost as many items for inclusion as the preceding two hundred years covered in the first volume. Some of the most important discoveries concern newly identified writings and engravings by Blake himself. This new work is organized like Blake Books, enabling the two volumes to be used side by side.

Theaetetus (Clarendon Plato Series) Plato.; John Henry McDowell Oxford University Press, U.S.A., Clarendon Plato Series, Reprint, 1977
Some dialogues of Plato are of so various a character that their relation to the other dialogues cannot be determined with any degree of certainty. The Theaetetus, like the Parmenides, has points of similarity both with his earlier and his later writings. The perfection of style, the humour, the dramatic interest, the complexity of structure, the fertility of illustration, the shifting of the points of view, are characteristic of his best period of authorship.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: Eife of (ZToemgen. i. (1) Now it was (foretold) in type and prophecy that there would come a high saint, noble and honourable, in Leinster, namely in Glendalough, to speak particularly, to rescue and repel men from paganism by the preaching of the word of God, for the healing of lepers, and blind, and deaf, and lame, and all kinds of sick folk, to raise the dead, to put down the mighty and lift up the wretched, and to drive away plagues and pestilences, to check thieves and crimes and strange monsters, and to instruct all kinds of perverted folk who opposed the will of God. (2) Now Patrick, son of Calpurnius, the chief apostle of Erin, prophesied of this Coemgen thirty years before his birth, and that he would cause a chief city (monastery) to be built in the aforesaid glen, for the refection of companies and strangers, of guests and pilgrims, and that he would bring with him to Glendalough some of the mould and relics of the apostles and righteous men who are at Rome. (3) And it is written in this life that for the obtaining remission of sins from God it is the same for any one to visit Rome, and (to visit) the relics and bed of Coemgen, as is customary, with penitence, and humility, and lowliness of heart. ' ii. (4) Find mac Cumaill prophesied likewise, that Coemgen would overcome the horrible monster in the lesser lake of the same glen, that was destroying every one, and drive it into the other lake. Therefore men and cattle, and all kinds of sick folk come to be healed and cured in the water of the lesser lake in honour of God and of Coemgen. iii. (5) When then all these prophesies were fulfilled, the promised one came, to wit, Coemgen son of Caemlug, son of Caimet, son of Rimid, son of Corb, son of Fergus Lamderg (Red-hand), son of Messincorb, son of Cucorb, (6) And ...

The book was planned and written as a single, sustained argument. But earlier versions of a few parts of it have appeared separately. The object of this book is both to establish the existence of the paradoxes, and also to describe a non-Pascalian concept of probability in terms of which one can analyse the structure of forensic proof without giving rise to such typical signs of theoretical misfit. Neither the complementational principle for negation nor the multiplicative principle for conjunction applies to the central core of any forensic proof in the Anglo-American legal system. There are four parts included in this book. Accordingly, these parts have been written in such a way that they may be read in different orders by different kinds of reader.

Phaedo (Clarendon Plato Series) Plato; translated with notes by David Gallop Clarendon Press; Oxford University Press, reprint 1975, 2002
Plato's Phaedo is deservedly one of the best known works of Greek literature, but also one of the most complex. Set in the prison where Socrates is awaiting execution, it portrays Plato's model philosopher in action, spending his last hours in conversation with two other seasoned members of his circle about the fate of the human soul after death. Professor Rowe attempts to help the reader find a way through the intricate structure both of individual passages and arguments and of the dialogue as a whole, stressing its intelligibility as a unified work of art and giving equal attention to its literary and philosophical aspects. The notes also aim to provide the kind of help with Plato's Greek which is needed by comparative beginners in the language, but the commentary is intended for any student, classical scholar, or philosopher with an interest in the close reading of Plato.

The Emergence of Norms (Clarendon Library of Logic and Philosophy) Edna Ullmann-Margalit IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Clarendon Library of Logic & Philosophy, 1, 1978
This book provides an account of the emergence of norms. Put very crudely, the main thesis of this book is that certain types of norms are possible solutions to problems posed by certain types of social interaction situations. The problems are such that they inhere in the structure (in the game-theoretical sense of structure) of the situations concerned. Three types of paradigmatic situations are dealt with. They are referred to as Prisoners' Dilemma-type situations; co-ordination situations; and inequality (or partiality) situations. Each of them, it is claimed, poses a basic difficulty, to some or all of the individuals involved in them. Three types of norms, respectively, are offered as solutions to these situational problems. It is shown how, and in what sense, the adoption of these norms of social behaviour can indeed resolve the specified problems.
