Since The Turkish Bath (1863) by the French painter Ingres, the Far Eastern woman has to many been a symbol of pleasures out of reach or forbidden. Malgré une liberté toujours plus grande, les mots comme les images sont devenus formatés. Le "politiquement correct" s'est installé comme un credo, et les images redeviennent des icônes, particulièrement celles des femmes. Durant le précédent millénaire, les femmes furent successivement déesses ou Vierges, aujourd'hui, elles sont des Top models ; pour les hommes, ce phénomène a transformé Apollon en mannequin ou en star de cinéma. Que reste-t-il de l'impertinence des libertins du XVIIIe siècle, des folies de la Belle époque, et du souvenir sans cesse récurrent des maisons closes... peu de choses en vérité, seulement quelques images un peu démodées. Cet ouvrage se veut sans tabous, à travers 800 reproductions qui couvrent notre civilisation depuis la Grèce antique jusqu'à nos jours, de l'Europe à l'Asie. L'érotisme s'affiche sans complexe comme un des moteurs premiers de l'évolution des sociétés. La recherche du plaisir n'est pas condamnable, mais le fait d'hommes et de femme pour qui la procréation n'est pas une fin en soi.
