The discovery of specifically acquired immunity which followed the major contributions of Louis Pasteur completely over-shadowed the first studies of the host's natural resistance. Later, the exquisite sensitivity and precision of antigen-antibody reactions made the study of immunochemistry much more attractive than the rather primitive and ambiguous field of non-specific immunity. Neverthe less, during the last three decades, a considerable body of informa tion was developed and also means by which natural resistance could be enhanced or depressed by exogenous agents such as lipopolysaccharides or BCG. An important advance was the chemical recognition of the biologically active components of these agents which in turn allowed the synthesis or'analogues. More recently, endogenous host products which can play a role in nonspecific immunity, such as thymic hormones, have also been identified, produced and used both experimentally and clinically. It therefore seemed worthwile to Drs. Miescher and Mueller-Eberhard to devote two volumes of Seminars in Immunopathology to the topic of Immunostimuhltion. Because of the good response obtai ned from readers, Springer Verlag decided to issue a hard cover book and asked their guest editor to make a preface. Prefaces, although they are found in the opening pages, are always written after the first issue has been completed.

Im Laufe der letzten vier Jahre sind in Deutschland eine Reihe von Leasing Gesellschaften gegründet worden; sie haben zunehmend an Bedeutung ge wonnen. Tages-und Fachpresse haben über ihre Tätigkeit ausführlich berichtet. Mit besonderem - oft kritischem - Interesse hat sich die betriebswirtschaft liche Fachliteratur des Leasing-Verfahrens angenommen. Das mag nicht zuletzt auf dem alten kontinentalen Mißtrauen gegen neue Geschäftsmethoden beru hen, die aus den Vereinigten Staaten übernommen werden. Sollte Leasing wirklich - wie die Werbung der Leasing-Gesellschaften behauptete - die "völlig neue Investitions-und Finanzierungsmethode" sein, die wie ein Wun dermittel auf einmal dem deutschen Unternehmer Rationalisierung, Moderni sierung u. v. a. mehr ermöglichen würdei)? Der Schwerpunkt der Diskussion lag bisher auf betriebswirtschaftlichen und steuerrechtlichen Fragen. Mit den besonderen Rechtsfragen des Leasing hat sich weder die amerikanische oder englische noch die deutsche Rechtswissen schaft eingehend befaßt. Insbesondere ist noch nicht untersucht worden, welche Rechtsnatur der Leasing-Vertrag hat. Schon eine oberflächliche Betrachtung der von allen Leasing-Gesellschaften verwandten Allgemeinen Geschäfts bedingungen (AGB), die Inhalt und Durchführung der Leasing-Verträge ab schließend regeln, zeigt, daß es nicht möglich ist, den Leasing-Vertrag ohne weiteres als Mietvertrag zu betrachten, wie es in der betriebswirtschaftlichen Literatur getan wird ,>. Der Leasing-Vertrag hat sich weit von der in den §§ 535 ff. BGB vom Gesetz geber konzipierten Form des Mietvertrages entfernt. Valerius Maximus was an indefatigable collector of historical anecdotes illustrating vice and virtue; his Memorable Deeds and Sayings are unparalleled as a source for the opinions of Romans in the early empire on a vast range of subjects. Mueller's study focuses on what Valerius can tell us about contemporary Roman attitudes to religion, attacking several orthodoxies along the way. He argues that Roman religion could be deeply emotional, that it was possible to believe passionately in the divinity of the emperor – even when, like Tiberius, he was still alive – and that Rome's gods and religious rituals had an important role in fostering conventional morality. The study further explores elements of ancient rhetoric, Roman historiography, and Tiberian Rome. The fact that Valerius was a contemporary of Jesus means his work is also valuable in reflecting the attitudes and beliefs of the ruling class to which Christ and his followers were politically subject, and which formed the background to the growth and persecution of Christianity.
