nexusstc/The Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism: Its Fundamentals & History/f386c6564d73b0560c1c7579cd79fb00.epub
The Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism: Its Fundamentals & History Dudjom Rinpoche Jikdrel Yeshe Dorje; Gyurme Dorje; Matthew Kapstein; Chris Conlon; Michael Farmer Wisdom Publications, Second, 2002
Written by a great modern Nyingma master, Dudjom Rinpoche's The Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism covers in detail and depth both the fundamental teachings and the history of Tibetan Buddhism's oldest school. This, the first English translation of His Holiness' masterwork, constitutes the most complete work of its type in the West. An absolute treasure for students of the tradition, it is also an indispensable reference for anyone with an interest in Buddhism. The book includes chronologies and glossaries that elucidate Buddhist doctrine, and it provides fascinating insights into the Buddhist history of Tibet. Two treatises form the present volume, namely the Fundamentals of the Nyingma School and the History of the Nyingma School. Among the most widely read of all His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche's works, these treatises were composed during the years immediately following his arrival in India as a refugee. His intention in writing them was to preserve the precise structure of the Nyingma philosophical view within its own historical and cultural context. This is the first time this text has been available in a trade edition. Beautifully presented, this single-volume edition represents a truly wonderful gift, and features illustrations in black and white and in color, plus maps, bibliographic information, and useful annotations. Review "For its breadth of vision and attention to detail, The Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism has become a standard and classic in its field. The translators and editors of these volumes studied and consulted with the author, Dudjom Rinpoche, before presenting the public this readable, systematic introduction to the whole of Buddhism from the viewpoint of contemporary Nyingma scholarship. Due to the scope of this work, [it includes] supplementary reference material (including visual images) to aid the reader. Several specialized bibliographies, a phonetic Tibetan-to-English index, a comprehensive table of contents, and a thoughtful introduction add to the efficiency of this exceptional work." ― Tricycle "A landmark in the history of English-language studies of Tibetan Buddhism." ― History of Religions "H. H. Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-1987), the supreme head of the Nyingma Order, was unquestionably one of the most extraordinary Tibetan Buddhist masters of the twentieth century. Highly realized, he also was a greatly accomplished scholar, whose numerous writings contributed substantially to the preservation of the Nyingma heritage. This foundational work comprises two 'volumes'--the texts and the reference materials. Volume One includes two treatises, here called 'books,' with the first book (pp. 3-382) covering the fundamental teachings of the Nyingma Order and the second book (pp. 383-973) representing the most comprehensive history available for this oldest branch of Tibetan Buddhism. Volume Two, consisting of the reference materials, makes up the rest of this enormous compilation, which includes numerous photographs, line drawings, and maps--an outstanding achievement for the author, the translators, and the editorial team of Wisdom Publications. In his first treatise, Dudjom Rinpoche explains the key concepts of nirvana and samsara along with the source literature relating to them, the important notion of Buddha bodies, the three vehicles, Buddha Families, the two truths according to Madhyamaka and the source literature relating to the 'causal' vehicles, the Secret Mantra Vehicle (Vajrayana) and its various levels and most important source texts. The second treatise has a historical orientation but necessarily also includes matters of philosophical and practical interest. Dudjom Rinpoche begins his treatment with the original teachings of the Buddha and the patriarchs of the early Buddhist Sangha. He next focuses on the rise of Vajrayana and its lineages of Mahayoga, Anuyoga, and Atiyoga. He describes the development of the many-branched Nyingma Order in incredible detail, paying attention to all its lineages and providing valuable biographies of their many masters from Padmasambhava to Mipham. A whole section is dedicated to rectifying classic misconceptions about the Nyingma tradition, and another section provides a concise chronology extending from the Buddha's life (who is assumed to have been born in 962 B.C.) to 1987 A.D. Gyurme Dorje, the principal translator, has rendered a helpful yeoman's service, especially for lay readers, by furnishing this tome with a systematic introduction that expertly maps out the contents of the doctrinal discussions found in the first treatise." -- Georg Feuerstein, Traditional Yoga Studies Interactive. About the Author Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-87) was appointed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the supreme head of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He was an enlightened yogi and meditation master, a discoverer of concealed treasure teachings (a terton) who was inseparable from Guru Rinpoche [Padmasambhava], the most prolific of contemporary Tibetan scholars, and an incarnate lama who had intentionally emanated for the sake of sentient beings for seventeen successive lives. Gyurme Dorje holds a PhD in Tibetan Literature and an MA in Sanskrit with Oriental Studies. From 1991 to 1996 he held research fellowships at London University, where he worked on the Encyclopaedic Tibetan-English Dictionary. He has written, edited, translated and contributed to numerous books on Tibetan culture. Matthew Kapstein is Numata Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Chicago. His previous publications include the Tibetan Assimilation of Buddhism: Conversion, Contestation, and Memory and, with the anthropologist Melvyn C. Goldstein, Buddhism in Contemporary Tibet: Religious Revival and Cultural Identity. He is co-translator of the late H.H. Dujom Rinpoche's The Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. Since 2002 he has also served as director of Tibetan Studies at the ecole Pratique des Hautes etudes, Paris.

Vajrayana Buddhism differs from other branches of Buddhism in providing an accelerated path to enlightenment based on Dzogchen principles. The word __dzogchen,__ translated variously as Great Perfection and Great Completeness, conveys the idea that our nature as intrinsic awareness has many qualities that make it “perfect”: indestructibility, incorruptible purity, non-discriminating openness, flawless clarity, profound simplicity, all-pervading presence, and attitude of equality toward all beings. The path to connecting to these qualities was once secretly held and privately transmitted; __The Great Gate: A Guidebook to the Guru’s Heart Practice__ makes the Vajrayana path and techniques available to contemporary seekers. Drawing on the work of four renowned Tibetan masters, __The Great Gate__ compiles concise instructions on Dzogchen’s foundational practices, which comprise a powerful method for turning the mind toward the Dharma and opening to the Dzogchen perspective. This revised edition features a new translation and an extensive commentary by Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche.

All religions teach codes of ethical behavior. So too does Buddhism. This books is a translation of an indispensable exposition of the three sets of vows that are central to Tibetan Buddhist codes of discipline--the pratimoksa vows of individual liberation; the vows of the bodhisattva, who selflessly strives for the liberation of all beings; the vows of the esoteric path of tantra. Here, the late Dudjom Rinpoche provides his authoritative commentary on the role of ethics and morality in Buddhist practice, outlining in detail the meaning and scope of the vows, and giving practical advice on maintaining the vows as supportive tools in the journey toward enlightenment.

Treasury of Precious Qualities: Revised edition Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche, Jigme Lingpa, Longchen Yeshe Dorje, H. H. the Dalai Lama, Padmakara Translation Group Shambhala Publications, 2011
This book is a translation of the first part of Jigme Lingpa’s Treasury of Precious Qualities, which in a slender volume of elegant verses sets out briefly but comprehensively the Buddhist path according to the Nyingma school. The concision of the root text and its use of elaborate poetic language, rich in metaphor, require extensive explanation, amply supplied here by the commentary of Kangyur Rinpoche. The present volume lays out the teachings of the sutras in gradual stages according to the traditional three levels, or scopes, of spiritual endeavor. It begins with essential teachings on impermanence, karma, and ethics. Then, from the Hinayana standpoint, it describes the essential Buddhist teachings of the four noble truths and the twelve links of dependent arising. Moving on, finally, to the Mahayana perspective, it expounds fully the teachings on bodhichitta and the path of the six paramitas, and gives an unusually detailed exposition of Buddhist vows.

A torch lighting the way to freedom : complete instructions on the preliminary practice of the profound and secret heart essence of the Dakini Dudjom Rinpoche, Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje; translated by the Padmakara Translation Group Shambhala Publications, Incorporated, 1st ed., Boston, Massachusetts, 2011
The foundations of Vajrayana practice are laid out with eloquence and precision here by one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist masters of our age. His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche’s commentary on the preliminary practices (ngöndro) is informed by his profound realization and wide-ranging scholarship, and illuminated with an array of quotations from the Vinaya, Sutra, and Tantra traditions. In addition to the commentary on the outer and inner preliminary practices, he provides other invaluable instructions on the correct view, conduct, and activity of a practitioner. Dudjom Rinpoche taught that the realization of the teachings of the Great Perfection depends entirely on the practice of these preliminary practices, thus his compassionate exposition of them here makes this book a particularly precious resource for anyone who seeks to remove the obstacles between themselves and the total freedom of enlightenment. Translated by Padmakara Translation Group.

Treasury of Precious Qualities: The Rain of Joy with the Quintessence of the Three Paths - Book Two: Vajrayana and the Great Perfection Two Jigme Lingpa; Longchen Yeshe Dorje; Kangyur Rinpoche; Padmakara Translation Group Shambhala Publications, Incorporated, Treasury of Precious Qualities, Two, 2013
Description This second and concluding volume of Jigme Lingpa’s classic Treasury of Precious Qualities is presented together with a detailed commentary by Kangyur Rinpoche. Composed in the form of a lamrim, or presentation of the stages of the path, the first volume set out the teachings of the sutras. The present volume continues this same structure and is a general description of the tantra teachings followed by an exposition of the Great Perfection, which in the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism is regarded as the summit of all vehicles and the final stage of the path of spiritual training. The section on the tantras is a compendious presentation of all important issues: lineage, empowerment, the generation and perfection stages, and samaya. The section on the Great Perfection is arranged according to the classification of Ground, Path, and Result and gives an extremely clear introduction to the doctrinal background that underpins the practice of this unique system. About the Author Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa (1730–1798) was a great master of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The root of the Khyentse lineage, he was a tertön, or discoverer of treasure teachings, and revealed the Longchen Nyingtik, one of the most important cycles of meditative practice in the Nyingma school.

Alchemy of Accomplishment: Instructions of Mountain Dharma, Heart Guidance on the Practice Expressed in an Easy-to-Understand Way by Dudjom Rinpoche Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje Dudjom Rinpoche Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje was one of the great masters of the Nyingma tradition who lived during the 1900’s. At one time, he was asked to give the basic instructions for Great Completion (Dzogpa Chenpo) practice to the members of a three year three month retreat that had just started. His discourse was recorded in writing and included in his Collected Works. The text of his discourse has become another of the several texts that have become very important for and are used frequently to present the teaching on Thorough Cut (Tregcho) of innermost Dzogchen. It has become popular not only in the Dudjom lineage but in Nyingma traditions in general because of its exceptionally clear and easy-to-understand explanation that comes right from the heart and goes straight to the heart. The text contains full details of Thorough Cut practice explained in a way that is very easy to understand but which does not avoid any of the unique and beautiful technical language of the system. Here is a small quote from the book. It is what he says to the retreatants just after he has given the introduction (sometimes called pointing out instruction) to them: “With that, we have made the mind of Samantabhadra blaze forth for us in direct perception and what could be more enjoyable? This itself is the heart of the six million, four hundred thousand tantras of Great Completion, which are the ultimate of all of the eighty-four thousand dharma heaps distinguished by the Conqueror. There is no more celestial destination than this...” The book starts with an introduction that gives the context for the text. It continues with the translation which is fully footnoted and contains extensive explanations of the unique language of this teaching. An extensive glossary is included so that even the technical language can be fully understood. This text together with Patrul’s Feature of the Expert, Glorious King, Dodrubchen’s About the Three Lines, and Zhechen Gyaltshab’s Essential Points of Practice are recommended as “must-read” texts for anyone doing any Great Completion practice and Thorough Cut practice in particular. We found that the original edition of the text as found in Dudjom’s Collected Works has many errors in it. Therefore, we made a new, correct edition that was checked by Gan Rinchen, the former head of Dudjom Rinpoche’s centres in the United States.

Perfect conduct : ascertaining the three vows / Ngari Panchen Pema Wangyi Gyalpo ; commentary by Dudjom Rinpoche Jigdral Yeshe Dorje ; translated by Khenpo Gyurme Samdrub and Sangye Khandro. Mṅaʼ-ris Paṇ-chen Padma-dbaṅ-rgyal, 1487 or 1488-1542 or 1543. Wisdom Publications, c1996., Boston, Massachusetts, 1996

Treasury of Precious Qualities: The Rain of Joy with the Quintessence of the Three Paths - Book One Revised Edition One Jigme Lingpa; Longchen Yeshe Dorje; Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche; Padmakara Translation Group Shambhala Publications, Incorporated, Treasury of Precious Qualities, One, Revised Edition, 2011
Description This book is a translation of the first part of Jigme Lingpa’s Treasury of Precious Qualities, which in a slender volume of elegant verses sets out briefly but comprehensively the Buddhist path according to the Nyingma school. Review “I believe the members of the Padmakara Translation Group have taken great pains to render a clear, accessible English translation that readers will find illuminating.”—His Holiness the Dalai Lama. About the Author Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa (1730–1798) was a great master of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. A Clear Mirror: A Visionary Autobiography of a Tibetan Master Traktung Dudjom Lingpa Rang Jung Yeshe Publications, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), [N.p.], 2011
A Clear Mirror is the autobiographical account of a saint, a genius, a virtuoso who has granted readers what is most rare in personal accounts: full access to his incredible inner life. Dudjom Lingpa was a 19th century Tibetan visionary and Great Perfection master whose legacy of meditation teachings has swept across the world since his lifetime, due in part to the international presence of his re-incarnate successor, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche. Although the genre of biography is quite common in Tibetan Buddhism, this is unlike to anything yet translated into English. This is exactly what Dudjom Lingpa does in his trilogy of auto-biographies. Although he was brilliantly successful in his multi-faceted career as a teacher to incalculable remarkable disciples, a prolific writer with at least twenty-one extant volumes of composition that are still studied around the world, and a Treasure revealer in the teaching system unique to tantric Buddhism, his stories offer us something else. In this book we are shown the very thing that high lamas regard as most sacred and intimate: spiritual evolution via the lens of inner-most visionary life, cinematic in scope, filled with fascinating beings, both divine and demonic. Dudjom Lingpa grants readers access to his enlightenment process—from learning how to meditate up to the highest tantric practices—as only he could have experienced it. This book, filled with vivid and fascinating visions and dreamscapes, is replete with adventure as well as everyday meditation advice. Anyone interested in a revolutionary outlook on personal transformation will enjoy and benefit from these stories.

This volume contains a generous selection of his inspiring teachings and writings, the core of which is a lengthy discussion of the entire path of Dzogchen, including key instructions on view, meditation, and conduct, along with direct advice on how to bring one's experiences onto the path. Also included in this book in their entirety are the oral instructions, tantric songs, and songs of realization from His Holiness's Collected Works, along with a generous selection of the aspiration and supplication prayers.

The Bountiful Cow of Accomplishments: Directives for the Two Phases of the Profound Path of the Khandro Thugthig Dudjom Rinpoche; Lopon P. Ogyan Tanzin Rinpoche; Dylan Esler Khye’u-chung Lotsāpa Translations, Khye’u-chung Lotsāpa Translations, 2015
The text presented here in Tibetan with English translation is the Bountiful Cow of Accomplishments and provides directives for the two phases of the Khandro Thugthig. It covers the entirety of the Vajrayana path, from the generation phase, through the completion phase to the Great Completeness. The Khandro Thugthig is an important cycle of teachings and practices revealed by Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-1987) as a spiritual treasure. Among the three roots of tantric practice, it specially relates to the sky-farer. The directives translated here are most closely associated with Yeshe Tsogyal, the Tibetan princess who became the consort of the great master Padmasambhava and assisted him when in the eighth century he introduced tantric Buddhism to Tibet. But Yeshe Tsogyal is more than a historical figure, for she is a wisdom sky-farer who inspires yogins to realize the ultimate nature of mind. The instructions translated here are both rare and profound. Those sincerely interested in these teachings and who wish to put them into practice may rejoice that such profound keys have been made available to them. For those having a karmic connection with this tradition and this lineage, texts such as these can be a catalyst for spiritual liberation. This text is intended for those who have received the transmission from a qualified master. About the Authors Dudjom Rinpoche (Dudjom Jikdral Yeshe Dorje, 1904-1987) was a pre-eminent meditation master, scholar and mystic of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Not only did he reveal numerous spiritual treasures of his own, but he also edited and revised the works of many of the great luminaries of the tradition he inherited. As an accomplished poet as well as a visionary sage, his writings have had a profound influence on the lives of thousands of Buddhist practitioners in the Himalayas and across the world, and are held to have a special relevance for our time. Lopon P. Ogyan Tanzin Rinpoche is the inspiration behind Khye’u-chung Lotsapa Translations, which produces English (and other European language) translations and editions of Tibetan texts belonging to the Dudjom Tersar tradition. He is also presently working on a Tshangs-lha-Tibetan dictionary, with the aim of recording and preserving the rich vocabulary of the Tshangs-lha language, which is now in danger of extinction. Lopon P. Ogyan Tanzin Rinpoche resides in Varanasi and frequently visits his centre in Arunachal Pradesh. Dylan Esler is a scholar and translator of Tibetan Buddhist texts. He holds a PhD in Languages and Literature from the Université catholique de Louvain and an MA in Buddhist Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He currently works at the Center for Religious Studies (CERES) of the Ruhr-University Bochum and is also affiliated with the Oriental Institute of Louvain (CIOL). His research interest focuses on early Nyingma expositions of Dzogchen and Tantra.

Inborn Realization: A Commentary on His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche's Mountain Retreat Instructions His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche; Venerable Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche Dharma Samudra, First Edition, US, 2016
Based on the firm foundation of intellectual study and contemplation, “Mountain Retreat Instructions” (Richo) is a meditation manual that brings forth vivid realization, making the results of meditation more tangible in your experience. These teachings directly usher the realization of loving-kindness, compassion, and respect, while going beyond all ego-clinging and grasping. Throughout Buddhist history, combining intellectual study with meditation was the essential practice. In particular, Richo was very openly used in all the Practice Lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, especially the Nyingma and Kagyu schools. The teachings always mention that individuals should spend time in hermitages and go to the mountains until they stabilize their realization because there are fewer distractions. Mountain retreat means “hermitage”—it is one of the best places to make yourself strong so you are not disturbed by all the fears and habitual patterns that are not healthy for anyone. Many teachers gave Mountain Retreat teachings, and among them, these instructions were taught by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, one of the great masters of the 20th century who was predicted by Guru Padmasambhava. This book includes a complete translation of “Mountain Retreat Instructions” by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche. Ven. Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche (1950-) was enthroned by H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche in 1978 as a Nyingmapa abbot. Afterwards he traveled and studied for many years with H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, as well as with his brother, Ven. Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche, and his father, Lama Chimed Namgyal. In 1988, he and Khenchen Rinpoche founded the Padmasambhava Buddhist Center, which now has centers worldwide. He has co-authored over 25 books in English with Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche. As a holder of the complete Nyingmapa lineage, Khenpo Tsewang Rinpoche is an expert of all the Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana schools, and is a Dzogchen master.
