For some time now Belgian architecture has been forging ahead as one of the most interesting inEurope. Following in the wake of more consolidated studios like Robrecht en Daem (2G N.55),Xaveer De Geyter or Stéphane Beel is a new generation of top-notch architects such as De VylderVick Taillieu and OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen itself.With a track record stretching back ten years, the studio of Kersten Geers and David VanSeveren has tackled all kinds of projects from a radical POV: quasi-utopian city proposals, frontierposts, single-family houses, government buildings, exhibition designs and pavilions. Theirarchitecture has not only to do with the design solutions that emerge but depends on radicalreformulations of the programme—such as emptying the Belgian Pavilion in the 2008 VeniceBiennale of Architecture and filling it with confetti—rigid schemes in plan—like the square dividedinto nine of the villa in Buggenhout—the construction of spaces based on concatenated rooms (orenfilades)—like the weekend house in Merchtem—or the burying of the volume—as in their villa inBrussels or the design for the Kunstmuseum in St. Gallen.This number of 2G contains three introductory texts written by the British critic Ellis Woodman,the American historian Joan Ockman, and the architects and editors of the magazine San RoccoPier Paolo Tamburelli and Andrea Zanerigo. To complement these, the Nexus section includestexts by the architects themselves and an interview with Enrique Walker. All the buildings havebeen photographed by the superb Dutch photographer Bas Princen.

Architects of the stature of Mathias Klotz, Smijan Radic and Cecilia Puga testify to a strong renewal of Chilean architecture, which has its prolongation in the younger couple formed by Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen.Established in the city of Concepicon, south of Santiago de Chile, the Pezo von Ellrichshausen studio made a name for itself in 2005 following the construction of the Poli House. Since then, and despite their youth, they have consolidated themselves as one of the most promising professional studios on the contemporary architecture scene. This issue brings together the studio’s built works and projects, single-family houses for the most part, which permit the reader to witness the evolution of the themes dealt with – from the compact, monolithic construction of the early dwellings, including interesting exercises in the use of courtyards, to the most recent theme of a rethink of the classic patio house."

Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Vitória do Espírito Santo, 1928) received the Pritzker Prize in 2006. Known internationally as a result of the construction of his Museu Brasileiro da Escultura (MuBE) in São Paulo, his work embraces many different scales, from magnificent single-family houses, by way of major reforms to important buildings and plans for public space, to enormous urbanistic projects. This issue of 2G displays the Brazilian architect's most recent works (some of them hitherto unpublished), all of them built in collaboration with a series of architecture studios, including the Pinacoteca do Estado, the Praça do Patriarca and the FIESP Cultural Centre, all in São Paulo, a chapel in Recife, and urban schemes for Montevideo Bay, Vigo University campus and the port area in Cagliari. Guilherme Wisnik's 'Architecture of the territory' provides us with a number of clues to understanding Mendes da Rocha's career in the context of Brazil, while a choral interview with the architect and his colleagues enables us to understand the process of collaboration and the development of the projects.

With Craig Ellwood 15 Houses we start reprinting in hardcover book format the issues of the 2G Architecture Review that have been out of print. Craig Ellwood ́s career was extensive, including over one hundred documented buildings. Houses were Ellwood`s beginning and the origin of his experimentation. And since he designed domestic architecture up to the later years, the houses provide a comprehensive view of his career. Ellwood ́s residential work also benefited from the experimentation in his commercial architecture. The selection has been marked by the state of conservation of the houses. Fortunately, the number of them in good shape represent the breadth of Ellwood ́s career. The publication of all this material, rather than undermining the tale that Ellwood told of himself, demonstrates the high standard he maintained throughout his production. Craig Ellwood (Clarenden, Texas, 1922) was one of the architects who during the 50s took part (alongside Charles Eames, Pierre Koenig and Rafael Soriano, among others) in the celebrated Case Study Houses programme organized by the Arts & Architecture magazine with the aim of promoting modern architecture and experimentation with new industrial materials in domestic architecture. Ellwood’s relatively short professional career spanned the years from 1948 to 1977, when he retired at the age of 55.

A pocos años de su fundación en 2006, el estudio impulsó, junto a la comisaria Ruth Estévez, la apertura de LIGA. Espacio para Arquitectura, un espacio de promoción e intercambio de ideas sobre arquitectura contemporánea a través de exposiciones, conferencias y talleres.<br> Con una trayectoria singular en el contexto mexicano, la obra de PRODUCTORA entronca con corrientes internacionales sin perder de vista las tradiciones locales. El estudio ha desarrollado una gran variedad de proyectos en México y en el extranjero, desde obras residenciales hasta edificios públicos o corporativos. En 2008 fueron seleccionados para participar en el proyecto Ordos100, una iniciativa comisariada por Ai Weiwei y Herzog &amp; de Meuron. Además de ganar diversos concursos nacionales e internacionales, su obra ha sido reconocida por los premios Young Architects Forum (2007) y Emerging Voices (2013), ambos convocados por la Architectural League de Nueva York.<br> Este número de la 2G es la primera monografía que recoge toda la trayectoria del estudio mexicano.<br> La publicación cuenta además con tres textos introductorios a su obra, escritos por el arquitecto español Jesús Vassallo, Kersten Geers (del estudio belga OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen) y Mark Lee (del estudio californiano Jonhston Marklee) y una entrevista acerca del proyecto LIGA que Mario Ballesteros mantuvo con el estudio mexicano.<br></p>

DOUBLE ISSUE Despite being known the world over as an artist Max Bill always considered himself to be an architect. His visual work and his educational labours in charge of the Hochschule fr Gestaltung in Ulm have been widely studied and publicised, yet his facet as an architect has scarcely received attention. Shigeru Ban may be best known for his evocative Curtain Wall House in Tokyoa highlight of the Museum of Modern Art's 1999 Un-Private House exhibitbut few know the range of this Japanese architect's work. In this first English-language monograph on Ban, 30 built projects reveal his inventiveness and humanitarianism. Ban's primary objectives in his work are the use of low cost materials and the dissolution of the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. His paper tube designs, which he first created as emergency housing for victims of Rwanda's civil war, were later reconfigured for earthquake victims in Kobe and are currently incorporated in Ban's Japanese Pavilion at Hannover Expo 2000. Influenced by the Japanese tradition of linking the home with the surrounding environment, Ban has created buildings such as Hanegi Forest and Wallsless House that invite nature to coexist with design.
