Justice, ideology, and education : an introduction to the social foundations of education Edward, Jr. Stevens, George H. Wood, Stevens, Edward, Edward Stevens McGraw-Hill Companies, 3rd ed., New York, London, United States, 1995
Two questions have guided thinking about the educational issues presented in this book. The first is,Who makes decision about schools and about how children are treated when in school? The second question is,Are the processes and outcomes of these decisions fair or just? Each section in this book relates selected educational issues to the broader themes of individual and social justice. Thus issues having to do with equal opportunity, evaluation, student classification, curriculum, the politics of schooling, and democracy in schooling are all seen in the light of a broader concern with justice. Students are asked to critically examine the ideological foundations of American education to see how they converge with - and diverge from - democratic ideas.

lgli/JOSEPH EDWARD SHIGLEY John J. Uicker Jr. - Teoría de Máquinas y Mecanismos (2010, ).pdf
Teoría de Máquinas y Mecanismos Joseph Edward Shigley, John Joseph Uicker, Jr McGraw-Hill School Education Group, 2010
There has been tremendous growth in the area of kinematics and dynamics of machinery in the past 20 years, much of which exists in a large variety of technical papers, each requiring its own background for comprehension. These new developments can be integrated into the existing body of knowledge so as to provide a logical, modern, and comprehensive treatise. Such is the purpose of this book. This book offers outstanding coverage of mechanisms and machines, including important information on how to classify and analyze their motions, how to synthesize or design them, and how to determine their performance when operated as real machines. To develop a broad comprehension, all the methods of analysis and development common to the literature of the field are used. Part I of the book begins with an introduction which deals mostly with theory, nomenclature, notation, and methods of analysis. Serving as an introduction, Chapter 1 also tells what a mechanisms is, what it can do, how it can be classified, and what its limitations are. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 deal with analysis - all the various methods of analyzing the motions of mechanisms. Part II goes into the engineering problems involving the selection, specification, design, and sizing of mechanisms to accomplish specific motion objectives. Part III covers the consequences of the proposed mechanism design. In other words, having designed a machine by selecting, specifying, and sizing the various mechanisms which make up the machine, we tackle such questions as: What happens during the operation of the machine? What forces are produced? Are there any unexpected operating results? Will the proposed design be satisfactory in all respects?

Confronting the veil : Abram Harris, Jr., E. Franklin Frazier, and Ralph Bunche, 1919-1941 Jonathan Scott Holloway The University of North Carolina Press, University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 2002
<p>In this book, Jonathan Holloway explores the early lives and careers of economist Abram Harris Jr., sociologist E. Franklin Frazier, and political scientist Ralph Bunche—three black scholars who taught at Howard University during the New Deal and, together, formed the leading edge of American social science radicalism.</p> <p>Harris, Frazier, and Bunche represented the vanguard of the young black radical intellectual-activists who dared to criticize the NAACP for its cautious civil rights agenda and saw in the turmoil of the Great Depression an opportunity to advocate class-based solutions to what were commonly considered racial problems. Despite the broader approach they called for, both their advocates and their detractors had difficulty seeing them as anything but "black intellectuals" speaking on "black issues."</p> <p>A social and intellectual history of the trio, of Howard University, and of black Washington, <i>Confronting the Veil</i> investigates the effects of racialized thinking on Harris, Frazier, Bunche, and others who wanted to think "beyond race"—who envisioned a workers' movement that would eliminate racial divisiveness and who used social science to demonstrate the ways in which race is constructed by social phenomena. Ultimately, the book sheds new light on how people have used race to constrain the possibilities of radical politics and social science thinking.</p>

Hillstead House : the country place of Theodate Pope Riddle Riddle, Theodate Pope; Riddle, Theodate Pope; O'Gorman, James F Princeton Architectural Press;Papress, Publishers Group UK [distributor], 1, 2009
Nestled in the bucolic village of Farmington, Connecticut, at the summit of 152 hilltop acres, sits what many architectural historians consider to be the finest Colonial Revival house in the United States. The 33,000-square-foot Hill-Stead was built for Alfred Pope, a wealthy Cleveland industrialist looking for an East Coast country estate to house his world-class collection of French impressionist art. The house was designed by his daughter, Theodate, a self-trained architect of considerable talent and ambition at a time when women of her class were expected to focus on family and social status. In the spring of 1901, Alfred and Ada Pope moved into their "great new house on a hilltop," as American novelist and occasional houseguest Henry James would later describe it. Just as impressive are Hill-Stead's grounds, designed in consultation with landscape architect Warren H. Manningfeaturing miles of dry-laid stone walls, lawns, meadows, and woodlandsthe crowning jewel of which is the sunken garden designed for Theodate by her friend Beatrix Farrand. When Theodate died in 1946, her will stipulated that the contents of the house never be moved, lent, or sold. Today, it is maintained along with the grounds as a not-for-profitmuseum. Hill-Stead is the first comprehensive monograph on this classic American home. Editor James F. O'Gorman combines gorgeous color photographs of the house's architecture, art, and furnishings with the latest historical scholarship. The nineteen period rooms presented in situ include paintings by Cassatt, Degas, Manet, Monet, and Whistler; Japanese woodblock prints; and works on paper by Whistler, Piranesi, Dürer, and Millet. Furnishings, including original Chippendale, Sheraton, and Empire-period antiques are all thereright down toTheodate's parrot, stuffed but still charming in his pagoda cage in her morning room. The family silver and china can be viewed in the kitchen, and monogrammed bath towels still hang over the huge porcelain tubs. Hill-Stead includes a long-overdue reappraisal of the design contributions of Theodate Pope Riddle. The design of Hill-Stead, long considered to be largely the work of the firm McKim Mead and White, is revealed to be the work of one of this country's earliest important women architects. Hill-Stead features a preface by architect Robert A. M. Stern

All you need to know about this book: 1- It is the companion volume to the most influential book of speculative fiction in the past twenty-five years, the award-winning "Dangerous Visions". Of course, you've heard of "Dangerous Visions". 2- It contains original stories, written especially for this anthology, by forty-two very special writers, none of whom were in "Dangerous Visions". Of course, you remember the writers who won all those awards for "Dangerous Visions". 3- It contains forty-six stories ranging in length from shorties of 1,000 words to short novels of 40,000 words; each story was written without thought to taboos or publishing restrictions that usually hamper sci-fi writers. Of course, you remember what a mind-blower, in this respect, was "Dangerous Visions". 4- Each story has its own Afterword by the author, as well as its own individual Introduction by the editor. Of course, you remember the wealth of addenda that made such a milestone of "Dangerous Visions". 5, 6, & 7- It took over three years to compile this book. It has been edited by Harlan Ellison who put together "Dangerous Visions", which you will surely recall. And... this is a more startling book than "Dangerous Visions". This book takes off where "Dangerous Visions" stopped and it is a BETTER book than "Dangerous Visions".

Theory of machines and mechanisms (McGraw-Hill series in mechanical engineering) Joseph Edward Shigley, John Joseph Uicker, Jr McGraw-Hill School Education Group, McGraw-Hill series in mechanical engineering, New York [etc.], United States, 1980
